This city centre shrine is well worth it. Even when busy, it is big enough to still appreciate it, but come early morning if you prefer the quiet. Not just the main buildings, but the surrounding shrines and gardens are a highlight.

Asakusa in general is the oldest area in Tokyo, If you like revisiting the history add this place to your agenda. access is very easy and there are many souvenir shops and restaurants in the area. Totally recommended. I have uploaded some photos different to those everyone usually upload.

A cute little strip of shops leading up to the temple. A good variety of stores offering snacks, trinkets, charms and lots of souvenirs. Make sure you visit the plush toy lottery store for your chance to win a variety of plush toys for 1000Y.

This place is awesome to visit at evening or night time. Full of lights and cheerful crowed. It's lively and vibrant feeling. Even during day, it is awesome to visit. The walk from gate to the main temple inside is what most come to experience here. It is nearby Asakusa Station maybe around 3-5 minutes walk.

I love the culture of Japan! The quality of life is unique and the History is refreshing. I always recommend coming here with family. Make sure to prioritize your visit and have a good photo, souvenirs and charms! Some accept card and some don't but not fret you'll have plenty of card friendly merchants

A place that is uniquely attractive based on its features no other places in Tokyo can replicate. Naturally enticing throughout the season, anytime at all, this is the place famous as one of the key tourist attractions. Most visitors who had visited the place would concur with me and definitely be awed by the ambience, the landscape, the surroundings and importantly the greens in the vicinity. In fact, I don’t mind revisiting this tourist attraction in another round of my visits.

A lot of tourists gather at the entrance to take group selfies with the gate, which just adds to the huge crush of people funnelling into the narrow street of souvenir shops beyond. It's not really worth hanging around as the main complex is beyond this gate and much more interesting.

Kaminarimon! Check! ✅ It leads straight to Sensoji Temple. Trying out the temple's famous bell-shaped senbei rice crackers. And guess what I got? A fortune slip! 🥲 Lighting incense, offering prayers, hoping for good luck to come swiftly.

This is where tradition meets modernity this really cool place offers wonderful temple, a nice market and great restaurants. Also please pay a visit to the tourism office. They have a nice view on the tokyo tower and sell unlimited subway passes for 2,3,7 days which are pretty convenient.

While this is jam packed throughout the day and night, I made a point to go for sunrise. Even at 6am there were a handful of other photographers but it was much easier to capture the shots I wanted of this beautiful place arriving first thing in the morning.

My husband and I stayed here on our honeymoon to Japan. We spent the first 4 days in Tokyo, and this hotel is strategically centered near hundreds of restaurants, shopping districts, and subway stations. The rooms are large for Japanese standards, and the beds are firm but still comfortable! The shower and tub is large and the water pressure is perfect! Like most Japanese toilets, there is a seat-warming bidet. The staff is very friendly and most speak English. Their breakfast is phenomenal - you get a choice of three entrees of the week, and have an accompanying buffet with fresh baked breads, fresh fruits, salads, and their famous Orange Spread and fresh squeezed orange juice. Their dinner is also fantastic, it took a lot for us to go out and try other local restaurants!

Great attraction site for visitors though you may need a tour guide to get information on this place and its significance. You probably can get a guide at entrance too. The best place to buy souvenirs too. Kimono etc

We came to Tokyo for 8 days and stayed in Asakusa because of the affordable price in this area...Kaminarimon is a mind-blowing tourist area and apparently this is Tokyo's oldest temple! It has a very long history and the tourism is just mind-blowing! Its a must visit area and highly recommended to stay near this place!!! Things are affordable and there are plenty of options!!!

Excellent, saw the blessing of a little child and a Shinto wedding. Multiple people in traditional clothing added to the flavor. Still a great experience even with the crowd.

This is the entrance path to the Sensoji Temple. A few walk from Asakusa Station of Metro. A wonderful place to shop around and get lost during daytime. You can purchase a lot of souvenirs in the shops!

Very accessible intro to Japan! We visited late morning on a Wednesday and it was quite busy. We were still able to easily to view and do everything and I loved every second! There are less busy shopping areas nearby and we found lots of delicious inexpensive food.

Beautiful atmosphere with an amazing street leading up to all it's wonder. Great festival location with a variety of good. If you are looking for a place to spend new years this is your location, just beware it is very crowded and you will be lining up, but if you love new experiences, well worth the wait.

Maybe all of the people already know. This place is one of favourite place to visit in Asakusa, Tokyo. Everyday this place is always crowded with foreign and domestic tourists. Inside there is a large Sensoji temple and a huge red lantern which is the center of attention as well as a spot for tourists to take pictures. From the front gate if we walk inside, we can see various kinds of shops selling Japanese accessories, unique Japanese food and drinks. The atmosphere is lively and the atmosphere feels very Japanese.

雷門 Kaminari-mon [Thunder gate] features probably the most photographed paper lantern in the world. The outer gate of 金龍山浅草寺 (kinryū-zan Sensō-ji) [gold dragon mountain/Asakusa temple]. The front of the gate features the Thunder and Wind gods. The temple side of the gate features statues of the Buddhist god Tenryū and the goddess Kinryū.

Busy area with Temple and shrine. Lots of food and souvenir vendors on the way to the Temple. There is a good viewing balcony on top of the visitors center. A little bit hard to get context if you don’t speak Japanese, but the internet has good information. Many sweets are filled with bean paste.

A must visit attraction in Tokyo. Before praying, you must clean your hand, mouth and clean back the water handler. Recommended to visit at early hours as crowded after 9am. Many survenior shops before entering the temple.

Pictures taken at different time of the day. A must visit esp for first time visitors. We come here everytime and still find it fascinating. Don't miss all the side streets and back alley from the temple.

This is a place that gives the ambience of Japan with the temple located here. It is full of shopping street and food stalls just next to it where you can enjoy a variety of food.

  • 3/5 T S. 10 months ago on Google
Once you've seen 1 temple in Japan, you've pretty much seen them all. There is no entry charge and lots to do in the area, like eating at various restaurants, wearing traditional kimonos, riding the rickshaw, getting your Chinese fortune, and shopping.

  • 5/5 Yuko G. 1 year ago on Google
After passing through the gate, there are many souvenir shops and it is fun. If you go to the back, there is a temple. It is said that if you take incense smoke on a bad part of your body, it will get better.

Beautiful tourist street with a lot of souvenirs shops and food shops, can be really crowded but I recommended to go at the end of the day or early morning. Overall nice experience with the temple at the end beautiful!

i think it could be named as the most popular tourist spot in Japan. always crowded, hard to get a photo with just one-self here. but good to see so many happy faces from all over the world.

One of the entrances to Senso-Ji Temple From here a street leads to it with a lot of Japanese street restaurants, it's worth trying and tasting different things from our "usual". All along you will see Japanese people eating their traditional foods from street restaurants. Each alley is more beautiful than the last. The atmosphere of the place is amazing, get lost in the alleys and enjoy/or not the smells of the food and souvenirs for the many tourists.

  • 5/5 Mimi Kitty T. 10 months ago on Google
Ive been there a few days ago and i experience how crowded people there all ive seen mostly tourist from other countries and i love to seen this big smile and exciting to take photo to the temple..better you wear kimono for the japan tradition if you are first time to visit there😀

Fun and very local place to purchase verities of (not eat) street food and confectioners, note NO public / street eating, drinking, smoking while walking, anywhere in Tokyo. But worth a visit, it's vibrant, welcoming and full of smiling and happy locals out and about. Lots of people but all very civil, clean and quiet.

  • 5/5 Amy K. 6 months ago on Google

It's a gate to the temple. Many shops for Japanese souvenirs, traditional clothes, foods, and sweets. Be careful as It's a narrow road and full of people.

As one of the most famous Asakusa attractions, the Kaminarimon Gate is not to be missed by anyone visiting Tokyo for the 1st time. Also, this gate leads all the way to Sensoji Temple. For me, I have been here more than 10 times in my life as I used to work in Tokyo in the early 90s. So, from that time till now, not much has changed, only the attitude of tourists. I recommend coming here on a weekday, just to avoid the crowds, but if you can't, then anytime is ok. Just that one weekends or long holidays, this place gets super crowded. The Kaminarimon Gate has the massive red lantern, which everyone wants to take photos of. So, after your photo session, just walk through and you will come to the main Nakamise street with vendors on both sides. I don't recommend eating here, but you can buy souvenirs along this long tourist road to the temple. Overall, spend about one to two hours here is more than enough, and move on to your next destination in Asakusa. Truly a must-visit place in Tokyo, Japan.

Incredibly magical place! Whenever I visited Japan I visit the temple for its beauty and peace of mind. The shops that form a corridor right at the entrance are pretty cool, but they are expensive for being a tourist spot. Spend time on site and enjoy. Smoke from the censer, take it to you by making movements with your hands. The Japanese believe that with this they are bringing wisdom, intelligence and good things to themselves.

The Kaminarimon was first built in 941 AD by Taira no Kinmasa, a military commander. It was originally located near Komagata, but it was reconstructed in its current location in 1635. This is believed to be when the gods of wind and thunder were first placed on the gate. The gate has been destroyed many times throughout the ages. Four years after its relocation, the Kaminarimon burned down, and in 1649 AD, Tokugawa Iemitsu had the gate rebuilt along with several other of the major structures in the temple complex.[3] The gate burned to the ground in 1757 AD and again in 1865 AD. The Kaminarimon's current structure was dedicated in December 1960 AD.

Great place for shopping just outside the temple but expect tourist prices if you don't hunt for a bargain. The temple itself is amazing and well worth a visit. You can do the water and smoke cleansing rituals and also get your fortune (for 100yen).

A very nice place where to see a bit of Japanese history in Tokyo. Depending on the season there are a lot of people or a crazy lot of people🤩 Around the main street, there are very nice and cozy places where to eat or drink something good. It's good to spend here some time even if it is overcrowded. Thank you 🤩

Must go in Tokyo, as it’s like no photos here you’ve not been to Tokyo. It’s quite a unique plaza slash market slash shrine landmark since I think it’s theme is more red and gold tone where as other Shrine or temple in Japan are whiter tone in my opinion. You can also come and sample all kind of Japanese street food there is.

  • 5/5 Shereen C. 1 year ago on Google
This shrine looks really gorgeous with the red sharp colour of the building! Full of people hang around and take pictures around by wearing the Japanese traditional clothes.

A must visit. The gate is iconic. I've been here many times over the years. With family, friends. Revisiting kaminarimon gate brings backk all beautiful memories. We usually walk all the way to asakusa temple. Along the ways, lots of souvenirs and snacks shops. Wether you are looking for something or not, its always great to experience the vibes there. Along kaminarimon gates, there are lots of restaurants, coffee shops etc. lots of things and places to explore. Go and see it for yourself.

  • 3/5 CH M. 1 year ago on Google
It’s nice to walk there and shops are very unique. You can buy a lots of Japanese souvenirs and foods. It seems like it’s trend to go with kimono. You might have a chance to rend it. For your souvenir you can also get lucky fortune calligraphy by the temple which cost you 500 yen. The price in the shops are relatively expensive.

We got up to an early start and arrived before much of any tourists were around. This was good and bad. The good thing was the fact that we didn't have to fight any crowds. The bad thing is most of the stores don't really start opening up till 930 - 10AM. Plan accordingly if you actually was to check out some of the stores here.

  • 4/5 Johnny L. 1 year ago on Google
If you haven't been here before, then it's worth a visit. Alot of souvenir stores and street food. We arrived around 3pm and it wasn't super busy but there were still alot of people.

Superb area loaded with tourists. Full of life and joy. Lots of souvenir shops which are authentic but a bit pricey. The temple area is well maintained and tidy. Great place to spend some times with family and friends. Can take food, public toilets and public transport.
