It is believed this place has the best wooden architecture in the world. King 3rd Wickramabhahu who ruled for 14 years ( 1360-1374) in Gampola Kingdom built this place. This place is famous for it's wood carvings. King 3rd Wickramabhahu's queen was Henakanda Biso Bandara. People believe that queen became a goddess and now the patron god for this place.

One if the place still showing the pride of ancient wood carving, art and prospect during that time. Hundreds of designs in each corner. Currently only school children's visiting here as part of their school curriculum. Not many tourists visiting here and not many tourist guides giving enough information to tourists. But this is a place for anyone who interested in history or wants to knie the prospect of old Sri Lanka.

With a rich history that goes back to the 14th century, the Embekke Temple is an architectural masterpiece. This wooden temple is famous for its intricate woodcarvings, structures and pillars- all of which bear testament to being one of the finest woodcarvings found anywhere in the world. The highlight of the temple is attributed more to its elaborate carvings of engraved elephants, lions, intertwined swans, two-headed eagles and much more that are visible on almost all the wooden surfaces of the temple- from the beams and rafters to the pillars and doors. The pillars comprise of elegant motifs of leaves, flowers, legendary mermaids and beasts and dancing women. The temple showcases a total of some 128 carvings that is an absolute feast for history and architecture enthusiasts.

Embekke Temple in Sri Lanka: A place with some of the best woodcraft in the world. In the Udu Nuwara area of the Kandy district lies a temple with a history of over six centuries. Built during the reign of King Wickremabahu III (1371-1394AD) who ruled in the Kingdom of Gampola, the temple is practically covered in wood carvings. The woodwork is confirmed by UNESCO as some of the best and most detailed in the world. Please protect this for future generations.

Embekka Devalaya (Embekka Temple) was built by the King Vikramabahu III of Gampola Era (AD 1357 - 1374) in Sri Lanka. The devalaya is dedicated to Kataragama deviyo. A local deity called Devatha Bandara is also worshiped at this site. The shrine consists of three sections, the "Sanctum of Garagha", the "Digge" or "Dancing Hall" and the "Hevisi Mandapaya" or the "Drummers' Hall". The Drummers' Hall has drawn the attention of visitors to the site, due to the splendid wood carvings of its ornate pillars and its high pitched roof. It is said that some of the wood work utilised for the "Drummers' Hall" came from an abandoned "Royal Audience Hall" at Gampola. There is every possibility the hall has seen repairs during the reigns of the Sinhalese Kings of Kandy. The carvings, which adorn the wooden pillars of the drummers' hall, as well as the "Vahalkada" (the entrance porch of the devala, which is said to be older) are some of the best examples of Sinhalese art. The base of the wooden pillars are octagonal shaped while their pillar top or "Pekada", has four leaves stacked in a square. The most noted and famous carvings out of them are the entwined swans, double headed eagles, entwined rope designs, breast-feeding image, a soldier fighting on horseback, female dancers, wrestlers, women emanating from a vein, bird-human hybrid, elephant-bull hybrid and elephant-lion hybrid. The roof has significant features. The rafters all slant from above towards the incoming visitor are fixed together and kept in position by a "Madol Kurupawa", a kind of a giant catch pin the like of which we do not find elsewhere. When we consider the carvings of the entire temple there are about 125 series of decorations, 256 liyawela type designs, and 64 lotus designs, 30 decorative patterns and roof designs, ending up in 514 unique designs.

This place also seemed to be not as well maintained as before. The historical carvings are the same as before, but the wooden pillars are not as good. There are several shops in the area selling wood as well as brass carvings, but most of them are closed. The intricate carvings in this place show the wonders of the ancient Sri Lankan wood art.

Greatest wood carvings of 14th and 15th Century Gampola Kingdom. This is originally the Audience Hall of the Gampola King, similar to that found in Kandy in the Dalada Maligawa Premises, which belongs to the much later Kandyan Kingdom. This is a Temple of God Katharagama, and it is located at a very tranquil place. You can take a rather uphill walk to Sri Lankathilaka Temple located 1.5 km from Embekke. This is considered one of the places qith the greatest ancient wood carvings in Sri Lanka; proof of the artistry and fine craftsmanship to present the story of the mundane world and the journey to the enlightenment!!

Embekka Devalaya is a historic temple located in the Kandy district of Sri Lanka, known for its stunning wood carvings and traditional Kandyan architecture. The temple was built in the 14th century during the reign of King Wickramabahu III and is dedicated to the God of Kataragama. The temple is located about 10 km from Kandy city and is surrounded by lush greenery and scenic landscapes. The main attraction of the temple is its intricate wood carvings, which adorn the pillars, walls, and roofs of the temple. The carvings depict scenes from Buddhist and Hindu mythology, as well as everyday life in Sri Lanka during the time the temple was built. The carvings are considered some of the finest examples of traditional Kandyan woodwork and are well-preserved to this day. The temple also houses a number of important relics, including a statue of the God of Kataragama and a sacred foot imprint of the Buddha. The temple is also known for its annual Esala Perahera festival, which takes place in July or August. The festival is a colorful and vibrant celebration that includes traditional dances, music, and processions with decorated elephants. Visitors to Embekka Devalaya can take a guided tour of the temple and learn about its history and significance. The temple also offers a peaceful and serene environment, making it the perfect place for meditation and spiritual reflection.

The temple is dedicated to the god known as ‘Murugan’ by the Hindus and ‘Katharagama deity’ by the Buddhists. Embekka Devalaya in Sri Lanka: The Story Legend states that the King Vickramabahu III’s consort; Henakanda Biso Bandara woke from a strange dream in which the god appeared and asked to build a temple for him. On finding that a drummer Rangama had the same dream, they considered it a portent and built a temple together. The original temple was supposed to have been a three story building that unfortunately did not survive the ravages of time. Embekka Devalaya in Sri Lanka: The Structure The temple consists of three main areas. The first is the Sanctum of Garagha which is the inner sanctum where the statues of the god is located. Next is the Dance Hall or Digge which is representative of the king’s consort Henakanda Bandara, and where dancing events were held in the times of the kings. The final section is the Drummers’ Hall, representing the drummer Rangama and where musical events were once held. Embekka Devalaya in Sri Lanka: The Woodcraft Except the Sanctum the rest of the temple is made almost entirely of wood. From carved wooden pillars in the Halls which have open sides to the beautifully crafted roof, the entire are is covered in carvings. The bases of the pillars are octagonal in shape while their tops end in the shapes of a four leaves stacked in a square. The pillars have various images carved into the sides of the bases. In addition carvings adorn the beams, rafters and doorframes. Notable carvings among these masterpieces were those of the entwined swans, double headed eagles, entwined rope designs, breast-feeding image, a soldier fighting on horseback, female dancers, wrestlers, women emanating from a vein, bird-human hybrid, elephant-bull hybrid, elephant-lion hybrid and etc. The carvings of the entire temple include 125 series of decorations, 256 liyawela type designs, and 64 lotus designs, 30 decorative patterns and roof designs, ending up in 514 unique designs. The roof of the temple is an excellent example of ancient wooden architecture, where the 26 rafters are supported by a single wooden wooden pin. Embekka Devalaya in Sri Lanka: Related Ruins About an eigth of a mile away from the temple there lays some ruins with a group of stone pillars. The carvings on the pillars are identical to those of the Embekke temple. It is said that once a wooden roof rested on these pillars but now they have fallen into ruin. Both the Embekke Temple and the nearby ruins are worth visiting for lovers of both history and art. Please contact Lakpura to arrange a tour to these historic places

Embekke Devalaya is a historical specimen for the creativity of the ancient sinhalese artists. This place is a symbol of the ancient wood carvings and woodworks. We can reach this place mainly using three routes. If you are coming from Kandy side then you need to get Kandy-Watadeniya bus and get down fron the embekke village. Otherwise you have to take Kandy - Pilimathalawa via Dawulagala bus and get down from Dawulagala junction. If you planning to start journey from Pilimathalawa, then need to take Pilimathalawa - Kandy via Dawulagala bus and get down from Dawulagala junction. Other route is starting from Gelioya town. History of this place is flowing to the ancient Gampola royal era.

Very beautiful wood carvings! Sadly very little care is given to protect the ancient place. The caretakers from the department just sit and watch while people touch and lean against the pillars. We brought this to their notice and they responded very lazily. All who visit, please try to protect this place. At the current rate, this may not last very long. Wish the authorities can be a bit more responsible in protecting these national treasures.

So, they are open to heavy rain. The place should be maintained very well and better if there is anyone to describe the history and the value to the visitors.

(Translated by Google) Created on two dreams - the Temple of Ambecca Embekka Devalaya The 'Ambakeke Devalaya' situated in the upcountry of the hill country is a marvelous creation that exemplifies the level of excellence of Hela artistes of Gampola era. The world-renowned building complex is a wonderful blend of architecture and wood carvings. The village of Ambekka is located near the village of Daulagala Talking about Sinhala architecture is well known. Though the three-storied temple has been a two-storied building in the ancient times, it is thought that it will deteriorate over time. There is a statue of God in the inner temple It is 53 feet long and 25 feet wide and contains 32 timber poles. During the Gampola Dynasty, late 14th century, the Ambeke Devalaya was built under the patronage of King Vikramabahu III (who ruled from 1357 to 1374 AD) with a craftsman named Delmada Mulachari. The book Ambecke Varnavana written in Sinhala contains many details about this. This shrine is best known for its wood carvings. Scholars agree that "the greatest wood carvings in Sri Lanka are in Ambecca". It is believed by many that King Henkanda Biso Bandara Devi, who was the head of king Vikramabahu, was not attracted to this shrine. Various legends related to the Ambecke Temple are mentioned in the history. The Ambeke Devalaya is dedicated to the Goddess Kataragama as well as to the Devi Bandara Devi of Henakanda. It was the meditative world that was behind this artistic production. Other legends built by the Ambecka Devalaya According to the historical legends, a drummer residing in the village called Rangama was cured of a leprosy disease at Kataragama. Then he went to Kataragama every year and was grateful to the bandits. Later, when the old woman was disturbed and unable to travel there, Lord Kataragama appeared in a dream and said, “Don't go to the village without fear. In a few days, I will show you a sign from the tree. Then come and worship the wedding drum. Later, when the thorn bushes were cut in the garden of the Ambakke flower garden belonging to Senakanda Biso Bandara Devi, King Vikramabahu's Prime Minister, there was a blood stream emanating from it. The king had arranged to build the Devalaya at Ambbekka as he had been dreaming of a drummer. There is a lot of superhuman legends about Henakanda Biso Bandara Devi. Legends say that she was once the queen of the king, a woman who had a close relationship with the king rather than the queen, and later became the queen of the god Kataragama. The architectural elements of the temple are more than five hundred different types of carvings. That is to say, the entire space is carved out of wooden pillars, stairs, beams, talons etc. This group of wood carvings is among the most magnificent works of art in the country. Embekka Devalaya Embekka Devalaya (Embekka Temple) was built by King Vikramabahu III of Gampola Era (AD 1357 - 1374) in Sri Lanka. The devalaya is dedicated to Kataragama deviyo. A local deity called Devatha Bandara is also worshiped at this site. The three sections of the shrine, the "Sanctum of Garagha", the "Digge" or "Dancing Hall" and the "Hevisi Mandapaya" or the "Drummers' Hall". The Drummers' Hall has drawn the attention of visitors to the site, with its ornate pillars of splendid wood carvings and its high pitched roof. It is said that some of the woodwork used for the "Drummers' Hall" came from an abandoned "Royal Audience Hall" at Gampola. There is a Hall of Fame in the repairs of the Sinhalese Kings of Kandy. The carvings, which adorn the wooden pillars of the drummers' hall, as well as the "Vahalkada" (the entrance porch of the devala, which is said to be old) are some of the best examples of Sinhalese art. The wooden pillars of the base are stacked in four leaves with their top end while octagonal shaped. When we consider the entire temple there are about 125 series of decorations, 256 liyawela type designs, and 64 lotus designs, 30 decorative patterns and roof designs, ending up in 514 u (Original) Embekka Devalaya Embekka Devalaya (Embekka Temple) was built by the King Vikramabahu III of Gampola Era (AD 1357 - 1374) in Sri Lanka. Embekka is a bit of a twisty road away from the other sights. If you are into wood carving it would be a nice place to stop and check it out on your itinerary. Each column and beam has a different pattern or style. If you're not particularly into wood carving, it would be okay to skip this site.

(Translated by Google) The Ambakke Devalaya was built by King Wickramabahu III (1360-1374 AD) during the Gampola Kingdom in the late 14th century during the expansion of the ancient Lakdiva kingdoms. This shrine is most famous for its wood carvings. Scholars acknowledge that "Ambakke has the greatest wood carvings in Sri Lanka". Many people believe that Goddess Senakanda Biso Bandara, who was the mahesi of King Wickramabahu, is attached to this devalaya. Various legends associated with the Ambakke Temple are mentioned in history. (Translated by Google) Located in Udunuwara Divisional Secretariat Division. The Embekke Devale, a remarkable creation of Sri Lankan architecture, dates back to the Gampola era. This is stated in the "Embekka Wedananawa" book. It is said that a three storied building was built by Hekanda Biso Bandara and King Ranwawala of the village of Vikramabahu III. But no part of it has been seen here, but very remarkably sculptured timber, chapel and cross beams have been found today with the wood carvings and temple devised by Rajadi Rajasinghe.
