What is really interesting to note is Tusker "Raja" is taxidermised and resides in this place. Small little place which takes a few minutes to view, wouldn't call it a musuem but small exhibit relating to this famous elephant.

It's also known as Tusker museum. It houses the stuffed corpse of rajah elephant which served the kings over decades. At the entry there are pictures with fame of Rajah with elite personalities of Srilanka like presidents etc. Also the final rites and other pictures during its last days.

On to the left of the temple is the new building which houses the taxidermised remains of the Maligawa Tusker – Raja. This magnificent tusker was captured in the jungles of Eravur in the Batticaloa District 1925. He was purchased by Tikiri Banda Manampitiya Dissawe for Rs 3,300/- in 1937 and was donated to the temple by him. For over 50 years Raja carried the golden casket which carried the tooth relic and in 1984 he was declared as a national treasure by the government. This is only the second time a tusker has been declared a national treasure. Raja died In 1988 after a long illness and then it was decided that he to be taxidermised. This is first time a tusker has been taxidermised.

This is the elephant that carried the Tooth, a great tusker. It was stuffed and it can be found in the museum. On the walls there are pictures with the elephant and presidents. There's also an elephant tooth in here. You can easily observe the great size and large tusks of the tusker compared with other regular elephants.

Tusker Raja is one of the remarkable elephant that sri dalada maligawa ATH GAALA had. Provided his service to the sacred tooth relic of loard Buddha more than 50 years in his life.Tusker Raja is well famous as a kind hearted amazing animal.Actually we can say Raja's life had a closed bond with Temple of the tooth relic kandy. When raja's old age he got some kind of fever as an old animal.Neranjan wijerathne (Diyawadana nilame before 2005) & veterinary doctors try to rescue him. But it failed. After the raja's death mr. Neranjan wijerathne had a idea to protect raja's memory to future. With the help of President R. Premadasa, mr. Neranjan wijerathne rescue Raja's body & built this wonderful memorial museum to Raja tusker. The museum located besides the main building of Temple of the tooth relic. It's the most suitable place to kept & protect this amazing tusker's memories exactly.

Giant tusker Raja is remarkable heritage in Sri Lanka. Lankans respect this animal from generations. There are number of amazing real stories about this elephant. He is the tusker who carried the tooth relic of the lord Buddha in Kandy perahera for more than 3 decades. He symbolized the part of Sri Lanakan culture also. The most important factor of this museum is, it shows how Sri Lankans are treat even animals who was with them. It is so impressing. People who are traveling to Kandy, should visit this museum which was cotton filled elephant Raja is in and feel the divine Sri Lankan cultural heritage.

Very informative place but the few officers of the museum ruined everything. They fooled Buddhist visitors into worshipping the copy of the Buddha's footprint kept inside the museum and forced to donate money.
