The road is popular as a very challenging drive even for the most experienced drivers. Many feared this route due to these bends, but it was the only route connecting these areas together. Although the name says ’18 bend’ in reality the road only has 17 bends because one bend was removed long time back when the road was expanded. It is known as one of the most dangerous roads in Sri Lanka and has become very popular among tourists. Many children and adults have a habit of counting these bends while travelling along this route and stopping over at the top of the mountain to gaze down at the beautiful valley of Mahiyangana.

It is the bus that takes letters from the city of Kandy in the morning. The 18th bend which starts from Ududumbara police area ends at Hasalaka police area.

The 18 bend was initially constructed by the British in the 19th century as a supply route to estates. This is situated along the Kandy-Mahiyangana-Padiyathalawa road which links Kandy and Mahiyangana cities. This was considered to be one of the difficult routes to travel due to its number of bends which made it difficult to ride. There are few viewpoints available which shows amazing breath taking views, the overall bends could be viewed through aerial view, there were drones to capture this from bird eye view. The longest bend is bend number 2nd to 3ed bend. Unfortunately some stones are dropping to the road during the rainy seasons.

This is also known as the ‘Daha Ata Wangu’ (Daha Ata means 18 and wanguwa means the bend in Sinhala). This is situated along the Kandy-Mahiyangana-Padiyathalawa road which links Kandy and Mahiyangana cities. This was considered to be one of the difficult route to travel due to its number of bend which made it difficult to ride. One of the bend is now longer available after the road was widen so technically there is only 17 bends now. The road is now widened to 15 meters. The 18 bend was initially constructed by the British in the 19th century as a supply route to estates. There are few viewpoints available which shows amazing breath taking views, the overall bends could be viewed through aerial view, unfortunately there were drones to capture this from bird eye perspective but there a some pictures available in the internet which is eye pleasing to view.

This is called the 18 bend because of the 18 elbow bends. The total length of the road is 41 km and the road was first paved around 1925. The main road was then gradually upgraded to a paved highway. Ancient folklore states that this road was improved to transport tea and coffee to the Colombo harbor. Only one bus has ever traveled here in history. It is the bus that takes letters from the city of Kandy in the morning. The 18th bend which starts from Ududumbara police area ends at Hasalaka police area. The view, which stretches for miles as you descend the 18 bends, is a spectacular sight to behold, albeit for hours.
