Bolgoda lake is the largest natural lake in Sri lanka. It is fed by Weras Ganga and Bolgoda Ganga which bring water from the South Lake. Ideal place to visit in the morning and the evening times.

Only half an hour from Colombo, Talangama offers an ideal chance to familiarise yourself with Sri Lankan birdlife while you get over your jetlag. As well as all the water birds detailed in other reviews, we saw the elusive Indian Koel, red Paradise Flycatcher, sunbirds, the Black-Headed Oriole, Lesser Yellownape Woodpecker and numerous others. There are wetlands, lakes and some large villas shaded by trees, so there are people around but the place has a very tranquil feel.

Nice and calm environment in a busy area. Paradise for birds lovers.

A nice place to birds watching near to Colombo. I saw nearly 30 species in a single morning. Nearly 1km path in the bank and paddy fields in the other side. Finally I think this is a better one for morning jogging and romantic evenings.

There is nothing to see. You can have a bath in mildly polluted tank. Better to have a bath at home. Some places to sit but no breathtaking views. Not seen any specific birds ..not photogenic.. Road is okay..

Very scenic and totally eye candy spot to walk and get a feel of simple village life somewhere in the city, A place that should definitely be protected and treasured for a lifetime

This is a lake situated in city limits, you can do bird watching if you go early in the morning. There is a small space where you can park. Also there were several people walking around the lake too.

Beautiful lake and associated wetland. Ramsar protected wetland which a great place for wetland fauna and flora fix. Brilliant place for a walk/jog to do birdwatching, photography etc. There is a fantastic Kola Kanda shop just past the sluice gates. Make sure to take all your rubbish back with you. If you are a frequent visitor or even if you're not, and wish to donate to the protection and upkeep of the wetland and surrounding area, consider doing so to the Thalangama Wetland Watch.

It is nice finding that place where you can just go and relax

Thalangama Lake is an urban wetland in the suburbs of Colombo. Making this area home are numerous species of birds. These include water birds such as Herons, Egrets and Storks. Jacana, Swamp Hen and Water Hen etc are commonly observed here. In fact, to list all the birds that inhabit here is a tough task. It suffices to mention that many species of forest birds too co exist with eater birds @ the Thalangama Wetland. It appears that most birds here are not too scared of the people. The future of this wetland may be in safe hands with some volunteer groups patrolling the area despite the usual threats an urban wetland faces. The biggest human influence is at the area surrounding the bridge. Here, people are seen to bathe in the water without much regard to the wild life. This practice seems to continue despite the sign boards erected mentioning that it is prohibited to bathe here. There is no proper carpark here. Actually, it could be a blessing I disguise for the wildlife which includes some endangered mammals such as Fishing Cat. If there was a proper carpark many people would have visited here for leisure activities.

The Thalangama Wetlands are the swamps surrounding the lake, which is located in the Thalangama area of Battaramulla. It’s quite shocking to realize that this haven of nature lies less than an hour outside the busy commercial center of Colombo. The Thalangama lake itself was manmade several centuries ago for irrigation purposes, and is surrounded by numerous paddy fields, canal, ponds and marshes. It supports a rich ecosystem that hosts thousands of species of exotic flora, over a hundred different species of birds, several species of butterflies and dragonflies, a few species of damselflies, reptiles and amphibians, and some small mammals.
