Khan Shatyr ("Royal Marquee") is a giant transparent tent in Astana, the capital city of Kazakhstan. Built in a distinctively neofuturist style, the architectural project was unveiled by the President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev on December 9, 2006. The 90-metre (300 ft) high tent (150 m (490 ft) including the spire) has a 200-by-195-metre (656 ft × 640 ft) elliptical base covering 140,000 square metres (14 ha; 35 acres). Under the tent, an area larger than 10 football stadiums, is an urban-scale park, shopping and entertainment venue with squares and cobbled streets, a boating river, shopping centre, minigolf and indoor beach resort. The fabric roof is constructed from ETFE-cushions provided by Vector Foiltec, suspended on a network of cables strung from a central spire. The transparent material allows sunlight through which, in conjunction with the stack effect, air heating and cooling systems, is designed to maintain an internal temperature between 15–30 °C (59–86 °F) in the main space and 19–24 °C (66–75 °F) in the retail units, while outside the temperature varies between −35 and 35 °C (−31 and 95 °F) across the year. Following the construction of the Palace of Peace and Reconciliation (opened in 2006), a glass pyramid, the Khan Shatyr Entertainment Center was the second national project in Nur-Sultan designed by UK architect Norman Foster (of Foster and Partners), (Partners in Charge Filo Russo and Peter Ridley), and UK engineers Buro Happold led by Mike Cook. Construction documentation architects were Linea and Gultekin. The construction of the tent-city was the responsibility of the Turkish company Sembol. After a series of delays, the main mast was eventually erected in December 2008, and the whole complex was completed and opened on July 5, 2010, 70th birthday of Kazakhstan's president, Nursultan Nazarbayev. Andrea Bocelli gave a concert for the occasion, with guests including the President of Russia, Dmitry Medvedev; the President of Ukraine, Viktor Yanukovych; the President of Turkey, Abdullah Gül; the President of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko; the President of Armenia, Serzh Sargsyan; the President of Tajikistan, Emomalii Rahmon; the President of Kyrgyzstan, Roza Otunbayeva; the Crown prince of Abu Dhabi, Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan; and the King of Jordan, Abdullah II.

The Khan Shatyr indoor Entertainment Center includes a mall on the 3 lower levels (underground, first and second floor), a food court on the 3 floor and then indoor active entertainment for kids as well as an indoor beach club on the top floor. This whole collection is embedded in a futuristic architectural structure (no surprise) and is definitely worth a visit, especially in winter when you are trying to escape the snow and wind outside. During the night, the building shines in different colors.

I like how it looks outside. No as much as inside. Expected more, but still nice place to visit.

Super cool to see a Norman Foster structure like this. It looks like a leaning, up-side-down, cone from the outside. And when you see the supporting structure and engineering of it all inside — you will understand as you are in awe! The shops inside are much like any other stores in most malls. They have a roller coaster type ride that goes through the entire mall, which can be fun for the young ones. There is also a sky beach club, however, on the very top of the “tent”… should be interesting to check out just for the view.

They are trying to make this mall one of their most touristic spots, but at first sight you can't see why, is just a regular mall, with average stores. The stores for kazj souvenirs are really nice with fair prices tho. But as a tourist, we ave to understand that the amazing thing about this mall is the architecture, that have different things, like the reference of how they just to build their houses when they where nomads, or the fact that they have no walls bus a patented polymer that help using the sun to keep the buiding in a comfortable temperature ( because nur-sultan is one of the coldest capitals in the world) or the fact that the first 2 floors are actually under earth floor, etc etc etc Is a nice experience and interesting view.

Khan Shatyr is a typical mall with unusual exterior architecture. If you are looking for something unusual I'd be better to consider other places. The options for clothing and accessories is okay, but it can be too hot inside during cold seasons without fresh and cooling air inside. The management should consider that some people might suffer from oxygen deficiency especially on the upper floors. Another thing is the lifts and escalators which are quite difficult to find. I can understand the marketing trick behind this, however in case of emergency or if in hurry, this could cost a fortune to some customers.

Cool style shopping mall, good to take pictures for tourist day and night when it lights up. Inside there are lots of eateries on the top floors and the mall houses lots of clothing stores from luxury to the budget spender. On the lower level there is a large supermarket.

A great entertainment centre in the middle of Astana city. The only bad part about it is that if you need to use the elevator, it is really crowded and the number of lifts are very limited

Nice and modern mall with a touch of Kazakh spirit. As far as I know the biggest Shatir on Earth. A bit overcrowded. Though it’s more plus then minus. It means there is everything needful for ppl. A very nice supermarket in the basement with nice products and cheap prices. A good place for nice and not expensive clothes shopping.

Just another shopping mall, same stores and nothing to really set it apart from the plentiful malls in the city. The upper floors were too warm for me as the sun baked it all afternoon. There are some amusement park style rides if that's your thing 😜

Khan Shatyr is a huge shopping mall in the heart of Astana. The largest tent in the world offers various stores, a theme park for children, a swimming pool, cinema and a large food court. The building is very impressive. The offers are diverse. The prices are a bit higher than in other stores in Astana. The team on site is friendly. Many speak English.

An amazing shopping and entertainment center, covered by the world's biggest tent! A great mall with everything you would need to buy, including all the great brands. On the 3 floor there is a huge entertaining center for kids and adults. Restaurants and cafes couldn't be missed, and on the top of it, there's an artificial sea coast, where you can swim, eat at its restaurant, and enjoy a cafe or a drink! A must visit when in Astana!

Entertainment, fun shopping, events. There's a beach with real sand and waves on the top floor, at the tip. Definitely a must-visit. Plenty of restaurants 👍.

A very unique blend of architecture and structural building. It's a piece of art , iconic and grand. Highly recommended to walk from Baiterek tower to this building looking at the most iconic buildings of Astana.

The architecture of the building is like a tent due to the nomadic background of Turks i think. Very hot inside during the harsh winter, it is good to relax here after taking a walk in -30°C outside. And many Turkish brands have their stores here.

We love going to the malls on Christmas Eve and Khan Shatter reminded us of how it used to be in the States. Busy shops, children smiling and admiring toys and decorations, and lunch at the food court. Today was easier finding a table to sit down for lunch. Still well maintained and clean food court and mall in general. Very impressive that the floors are so clean and dry even with all the ice and snow. Happy holidays!

A great mall here in Astana. It unique design makes this a must go see at least once, but sure you will go back many times. It has an indoor pool that is more like a visit to the beach and plenty of stores that will suit all.

It has the shops you need, not too big and it's spacious. Inside parking is easy but leaving the external car park is chaotic and slow during busy times.

Even if you're not into shopping it's well worth checking out this shopping centre designed like a huge tent. It was also mercifully cool compared to the hot summer weather outside!

Nice place to hangout. Shaped like a tent, with a beach on top floor. Like most malls, open till midnight. Found a gokd souvenir shop here. The mall, the plaza opposite it and the entire stretch till baiterek tower is beautifully lit at night. Visit it in both daytime and night to enjoy full beauty.

Among many magnificent architectures in Nur Sultan, located right in the center of the city, this is one you can’t miss. This world-biggest tent stands 90 meters tall and covers 35 acres in space. It’s a perfect combination of modern life style (shopping mall of 200+ popular shops/brands and restaurants) and Nomadic culture (yurt). Designed by world-famous architects Foster, it is built w first-class technology and materials. Highly recommend.

Very crowded mall, the corridors are very narrow, and the heating system is so strong that you really sweat inside. The children section is very big so there is a lot of noise in the mall. The food court doesn't offer enough tables and chairs for the number of people that go there. And to go to the Sky Beach, you can't even take a look. You have to pay to be able to see, even if you don't want to use it. And in the afternoon, there is a long line to wait to buy the tickets to enter.
