The first room they put me in was dirty. The toilet seat had a pee stain on it. The tub was definitely not something I’d want to lay in. Also, both locks were broken — no dead bolt or the hook for the other lock. That was the deal breaker for me, so I went to the front desk and they did put me in another room, which, though was a pain to move, was better than being in a room that wouldn’t lock. The new room, fortunately, had functional locks. However, there was no hand soap and no hooks to hang towels. The WiFi was pretty awful and even with an international cell phone plan, the service here was very low and sporadic. The restaurant was wonderful though. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. The food was delicious and very reasonably priced. The shuttle service to/from the airport is really handy. It is nice and convenient to be that close. For a one night stay, it’s convenient, though definitely not up to the standards of other Marriott hotels I’ve stayed.

Probably one of the worst hotels we have ever stayed in. Arrived at 23h after an exhausting day of travel. Impossible to check in with the staff at reception downright rude and not responding to any questions. We had to leave at 4h45 to enable us to catch a domestic flight. Same situation. Impossible to check out. Can’t find our transfer, can’t pay for our bar bill. Felt like the staff were literally flapping around. Seriously you do not need this amount of extra stress when you are traveling and have 5 hours to catch up on a bit of sleep before your next stretch of travel. Book somewhere where the staff are actually capable of doing their job. Carpets in corridors should really be vacuumed regularly, which is the least you can expect of any hotels plus their should really be a hairdryer in the bathroom. Very disappointed.

I must say although the noise pollution can be a lot the proximity to the airport and other attractions is a big plus. The rooms were more then adequate with a bath and a decent shower. The service was unrivaled. Very prompt and polite service and I'd like to give this hotel and experience 5 stars

Best thing is the location (hence the 4 stars), next is staff friendliness. Good for short stays and simple meals. Free shuttle to and from the airport, runs every 15-20 minutes, but be warned that at peak times of the day the 16 passenger van may not fit everyone. Overall a decent hotel, and while they have made an effort with renovations, it does have that old worn feeling. The rooms make the most out of limited space and are clean and comfortable. The staff are very friendly, the food in the restaurant is decent and I had a sense there were some items that would be better than others. Better than fast-food but not as good as an actual stand alone restaurant.

This is a hotel about 10 minutes by shuttle bus from the airport. This was the only negative. It was quite late on the way there and was full on the way back on both days which meant some guests had to wait 30 minutes for the next. The staff are excellent and helpful as is breakfast. The friendly atmosphere is worthy of highlighting. The rooms have everything you need. We also had dinner which was reasonably priced and great for a chain hotel.

The hotel is providing a reasonable stay option at the airport at an affordable price. Nevertheless, I expect a better experience. The room was small and was probably last renovated a long time ago. The walls are very thin, so we could easily hear phone calls and sneezing/coughing sounds. The whole place is old and the breakfast is below average. I appreciate the free shuttle but also realize that it is an essential service and not a luxury offering from the hotel - reaching it by foot or public transportation is not possible. Overall, it would fit someone with a minimalistic style and low expectations.

I honestly wouldn’t advice people to go to this hotel. I’ve spend my 5 days there, and the kitchen staff is very friendly, but regarding other things, we mostly felt like there was some missing things and information. First, there’s no balcony that accommodate people who smoke, so if your room is at the top, you will frequently have to travel downstairs , one elevator has problem, so for you to be safe, rather take the stairs. Secondly, you in a room looking for a reception helpdesk, there is no phone book that you can call to request a service. Speaking about service, they claim to have a 24hour service, 24hour service means anytime you in need of something, you can easily call or go to the reception, even after you got the line number for the reception, when you call, the phone will ring probably until you fall asleep, even if you go downstairs to the reception, you find no staff present, those that you find, they won’t be able to assist you. And when you finally find someone to help, they will tell you that they operate until 2:00, then what’s the 24hour service for?. Conference hall toilets stink, sometimes they don’t have tissues. There’s even more bad service. So if you were thinking of going to a hotel next to OR Tambo international airport, I would advice you to rather choose other hotels that a located next to the airport, yes there are other hotels that offer better service even way better that Protea Hotel. So my advice, avoid Protea Hotel to avoid disappointment, especially black people😏.

Booked and paid online, but reception demanded additional payment to cover "levy". Hotel shuttle fetched me from the airport, but did not leave early enough for me to catch my morning flight. They were unwilling to arrange an early shuttle to accommodate.

The staff here were very friendly and accommodating. It is a short shuttle from the airport. We stayed for a 14 hour layover. Shuttles every 15 minutes from the bus terminal. Great breakfast buffet. Good Marriott property!

The staff and service was absolutely amazing. Enjoyed the great breakfast, which was a generous mix of options on offer to suit the needs of any guest. Being a premium priced hotel i did expect more regarding the rooms. The room i stayed in had a few things that detracted from the raiting. The towels were stained and cleanliness of them were questionable. The toilet flush mechanism was broken. Light fixtures were hanging out of the ceiling. These few things should not be present in a premium priced hotel.

Modern, quirky rooms that are aviation themed. Friendly and efficient service. The restaurant serves great food at reasonable prices and during the 4 days we stayed there, we never experienced any sort of excessive wait. Waiters are friendly and attentive. The hotel's rooms have an inner and outside window for great noise cancelling. Despite this hotel being situated right next to the airport, one hardly hears any noise. Had a fantastic time there and I'm looking forward to staying there again.

Good choice for short layover. Modern & fresh room design. Clean & equipped for basic needs. Complimentary coffee station in the lobby for early birds. No response when calling front desk or operator for service, but responded via their chat app.

Perfect location for a stayover for those early morning flights. Shuttle Service is excellent, even got free parking for our car for 7 days, remember to arrange in advance with management. Vee and her weekend team was excellent. Highly recommended for your airport accommodation!

Great hotel after a very long flight and late nights. Would be great if they made their shuttle service from the airport more obvious to find. Downstairs in the lounge, there is great free coffee in the early morning.

Excellent quality of rooms and service from staff. Only two issues: 1. The check in is very slow as rooms are usually not ready in time. Although check in is 2pm they sometimes take you in after 5pm. I stayed there for four days and our check in was delayed and I saw scores if people waiting for rooms after 5pm daily. 2. Even though I had told the chef I was vegetarian on check in, for the four days breakfast, lunch and dinner I had to eat the veg side dishes, mostly grilled/boiled veg. They need to add main veg meals like veg lasagne, mac and cheese, veg curry or veg breyani. Furthermore I could see alot of the veg was recycled to the next meal. Even desserts were re-used daily and stale by dinner. Otherwise great hotel, the food selection needs to be changed from quantity to quality.

Fabulous option for those who would like to have a proper rest after or before their flight from O.R. Tambo. Carefully designed interior *a lot of aviation related details), functional and clean rooms, reasonably priced. Efficient and friendly service in the dining area. Friendly reception. Super effective shuttle bus scheme. Perfect.

Service is truly excellent, but the accommodations themselves are very rundown and of poor quality. Paint chipping, walls paper thin, my hotel door did not have a secondary chain lock. This is a 2 or 3 star hotel with 5 star service from the staff. Fine for a night but next time I may try another hotel.

Excellent aircraft theme going through-out the hotel. Meals are tasty. Not within walking distance but a regular shuttle service does depart from the bus terminals every 30min and only a short drive away, about 5 min

Really good airport hotel! Free shuttle from the bus terminal at JNB to the hotel door. Staff at this hotel are exemplary and cannot do enough for guests. The beds are HUGE and very comfortable, good night sleep after a long flight. The breakfast buffet is good, with a wide range of hot and cold food. Again, staff here are very attentive and cannot do enough for you. The outdoor pool area is a nice touch, very clean, tidy, and attractive. Nice to watch the aircraft pushback and taxi off!! I would for sure stay here again.

Second stay at this great and nicely decorated hotel and was again very satisfied with its services and staff. Standard rooms are rather small and do not offer airport views. Bed was comfortable. Almost no airport noise noticeable but some slamming doors from time to time. What makes this Hotel outstanding in my opinion is the friendliness of its staff. They really go the extra mile for your satisfaction and there's always a happy and friendly smile. The coffee station by the reception where you can get yourself a great cup of coffee or a cup of tea is a very nice touch. Fair prices for food and beverages, nice breakfast buffet selection and great barista quality coffee. Definitely worth a stay if you need to overnight at Johannesburg Intl. Airport.

This is the kind of hotel AVgeeks would love to stay. The entire design is related to aviation and this is great. Besides, there is a flight simulator just next door and can been clearly seen from rooms facing OR Tambo Int. Airport. If you're looking for a nice, quiet, simple yet functional place while on transit in Joburg, this hotel is a cool place to be. The rooms are not spacious, but large enough for a layover or while on a business stay if spending most of the time out of the hotel. The curtain separating bathroom area from the sleeping area shows how simple and functional the place is. The staff was welcoming, friendly and attentive to my needs, making helpful suggestions on how to navigate around the Kempton Park area. The food was very good during my stay. Not the best I've had before but I really enjoyed the buffets when I ate at the property.

Location is a bit tricky. It's a must for GPS. With regards to customer service from reception, conference room, bar to the rooms ike 👌the best. Everyone was welcoming and friendly. The 1st conference room we were accommodated it was so hot & we were not sure whether the air-cons are working or not, but when we informed the hotel team they did not hesitate to change the boardroom and provide our team with a more comfortable, less hot and also specious Conference room. We enjoyed our stay and THANK YOU to the whole team that who made our stay conducive & comfortable🤝.

Nice JNB airport hotel. Free shuttle every 30 minutes. Friendly staff and good customer service. Rooms a little small. No water pressure in the sink faucet. No door separating bathroom from rest of room only a curtain -- weird, never seen this before. Beds were comfortable and no airport noise despite being so close. Delicious breakfast buffet for R235/person (US$12.66).

Went to Spa. Exceptional food. Not sure if full package included full body with half hot stone massage... masseuses not well-trained. Hot stones constantly banging against each other and half body massage not done same as other half. Definitely not relaxing like in falling asleep relaxing. Foot massage great but I was uncomfortable being short and told by therapist she is short also and can't reach appropriately

I over this hotel for business trips. The staff are friendly and the rooms are great. The gym is simple but enough to do a solid workout with a few weights as well. I love the aeroplane theme. Always clean and great food.

After a long holiday, we had to stay in JoBurg two additional days due to illness & cancelled flight. Such is travel these days. When we arrived from the airport via shuttle to Marriott, if felt a bit like home; familiar and I was so relieved when my head hit that Marriott pillow. The staff has been excellent. The food & drinks (especially) have been great. The hotel description in google maps does not do it justice. When first delayed from getting back to the states, I thought not a good end to our vacation. After two days of rest in lovely surroundings, I am refreshed, not frustrated.

What a wonderful airport hotel with the kindest staff I have ever encountered. We owe one individual a huge THANK YOU. His name is Machimana, and he kindly escorted me and my daughter to the local hospital at 3am in the morning and back and then back again at 6am when the pharmacy opened. A truely kind human, and the hotel is lucky to have such a lovely employee! If you need more, the hotel restaurant is excellent and the rooms are modern and clean (if a little tight). Don’t hesitate to book a stay at Protea.

Clean hotel near the airport with a shuttle (that only runs until 11pm). Despite how close it looks on the map, It is a bit of a drive because the road and route is circuitous. The room is a bit unusual in that the bathroom and bedroom are all one room separated by just a curtain. Very small closet. There is coffee service and a blowdryer. Everything is comfortable. Breakfast is very nice with eggs cooked to order. It's not a place you would want to stay for an extended period of time but it's great if you're just wanting something close into the airport.

Great option near OR Tambo airport, staff is very friendly and attentive and it is a short drive from the terminal (with free airport shuttle twice every hour, both ways). Room is a bit small, but ok for one night.

Great personable staff, the shuttle service was a godsend as we needed to travel between the hotel and airport 7 time to sort out my flights and get Corona virus tests done. Shout out to Penny for all the printing, and Johannes for the great service to and from OR Tambo. Breakfast was delicious.

Very neat & tidy hotel with friendly and very helpful staff at reception desk. Late shift manager during our stay wasn't very accommodating. Refused to serve us drinks after nine nor did he inform us that room service are available even though I pointed out to him that your notice display no serving of alcohol after ten only. He did not even want to listen to my unhappiness & rushed out of the hotel at 21h20.

Good airport hotel, with free transportation to and from the terminals. The rooms are small but you don't feel crowded. Love the shower and the room service did was much better than expected, it beats many restaurants. Visited during level 4 lockdown so I didn't get around much.

My friend and I stayed at the Protea Hotel O.R. Tambo Airport for one night in October 2021. We had finished a safari in Kruger National Park and wanted a hotel near the airport since we had an early flight to Mossel Bay booked for the next day. The hotel is fine for the price and location (if you're interested in being near the airport). The rooms are clean and modern but a little small. Annoyingly, the shower and sink are not in a separate room but, rather, separated from the sleeping area by a thick curtain (the bathroom is in a separate closet). This means that someone taking a shower does not have much privacy. Further, the shower itself does not have a glass door or curtains so it's a bit difficult to keep water inside the shower. The hotel restaurant is typical bar food (burgers, etc.). The food was tasty enough but service was rather slow. The free airport shuttle (leaves every 30 minutes) is convenient. Bottom line: it's perfectly fine for a one-night stay to catch a flight.

Not the most convenient location in relation to the airport (its not a simple one or two street away commute), "currently under renovation so be alert to this" Good hotel gardens, great common eatery area. Conference facilities are dicey and best plan ahead (including a test run). Parking sufficient and friendly staff. Not first prize but a good enough property. Best for lodging and holiday making - over business or conferencing.😎

The hotel was undergoing renovations when I was there. It didn't look safe, intact seemed like a lawsuit waiting to happen. The food was below average except for their dessert, it was good. I have a sweet tooth so I really enjoyed it

  • 3/5 Oliver S. 2 years ago on Google
Front Office staff supper though waiting must be minimized as only one staff is found, this was my experience during checking in and out. The environment in rooms can be better compared to other Protea Hotels I have been.

Attended for a two-day workshop. Conference facilities were pleasant and food was good. The room was clean, modern and perfectly suited to my needs. The aerial decor was charming and imaginative. The food was enjoyable and the desserts, much to the dismay of my trainer, were wonderful. The staff were attentive and the shuttle between the airport and hotel was free of charge and every half an hour. The only criticism I have was that the bar ran out of most of their stock but then perhaps they're not quite used to those kinds of Cape Town visitors... ;-) Would definitely recommend.

Great place for an overnight stop over since it's so close to the airport. Very clean, very contemporary modern airport industrial theme throughout the hotel. The beds, bed linen, and pillows are all magnificent. The food in the restaurant that I had was delicious and inexpensive. There was even a live musician and social gathering at the bar and fireplace into the late evening. I highly recommend it and expect to be back twice in the next month.

The place is good. I loved the theme. The room was small but it didn't bother me, I've seen smaller. They have noise-proof windows (double). I didn't like the bathroom layout. You're gonna grab the toilet door handle after wiping your behind, before washing your hands. The room, shower and basin are open-plan. Shower and basin area can be covered by drawing a curtain. My food was fine but other people complained about lightly charred food. The wardrobe is small.

For a hotel built right on a highway and overlooking OR Tambo airport, it was great. The rooms are all done in an aviation theme, and very well appointed. The staff where incredible, with smiles and help a plenty. The food at the restaurant is pretty good and everything is pretty well priced. A nice convenient find. A may be back.

Rooms are a bit small. The area surrounding the hotel are a bit scary at night when you must wake up early and drive to the airport. The service and personnel was excellent although they wanted to charge me 1% extra when I checked in which I refused to pay. I booked through boòking.com and the booking confirmation said that I had paid in full.

I would not suggest anyone to stay in this hotel. When I arrived at 23h there was a group of 15 people plus myself (a female traveling solo) that were informed there was overbooking and we should go to another place they’d organized. At this time, I had to take the rental car and drive late at night by myself in a very lonesome area to a hotel which was half the rate. I have been claiming at least they give me back half the money and they don’t even do that. Terrible experience

  • 4/5 Robyn B. 1 year ago on Google
Had a good 3 nights at the hotel. Breakfast was great and service around breakfast was on point. Supper buffet can improve... Service was not the best the last night and the menu never changes. Please consider this. The reception is on point... Friendly, helpful anw the morning wake up call was much appreciated.

The price was all right but they could have made it clear that there were serious building works going on. I wanted an afternoon by the pool but that was not possible as it was a building site and no pool. The rooms are not insolated very well. A lot of noise from traffic, guests, staff and building works
