US forts made out of wood were attacked and put on fire by the English navy, so US obtained the fort blueprints from the French. This used to be a three storied fort when built with a three levels of cannons protecting the trade channel. The fort was used in the Civil War and in WW-1 and WW-2. The fort was occupied by the Union Army during the entire Civil War. It served to blockade the Confederate ports from providing supplies. This particular battery was named after Lt. Lewis Adair.

The fort was surrounded by forests and trails which are fun to explore. The grounds were clean and well kept up. Beautiful views of the ocean and surrounding area. This is a must stop if you have come this far in Key West. Iguanas are everywhere!!!! There is a fee for admission so please check rates beforehand.

Anyone interested in history should take a detour to the fort. There isn't too much to see, but it's still impressive. And you can combine the trip with a visit to the great beach opposite. Admission for two people with car is $7.

Very nice moat. Very big and fun to explore. Many trails surround the moat and a small weapon smith located next to the fort. You can also go on top of the mount using stairs and there are many cannons. When you visit fort Zack make sure to visit this.

Very cool fort. There were a lot of closed off areas that I wish we could have gone I to, but I'm sure it was for a good reason.

Fort Taylor and the beach are a great spot to get away from the hustle and bustle of Key West. Enjoy some local military history and the story of perpetually defending the Gulf and coastal waters of South Florida.

Nice state park with a old fort, walking trails and beautiful beaches. There are few facilities and places to sit.

There's not much to see or read, except for a few signs, but it's worth doing once
