We had a wonderful tour with David. He was extremely knowledgeable and informative about The Big Hole and the history of Kimberley. The best part was how interactive and fun he made the tour. We really loved it and would recommend a tour with David to anyone who visits.

This is still an 'unbelievable' sight to see. Ensure to opt for the full package which includes the tour. The amount of information is not overwhelming and for those that would like to know more can spend time reading all the information in the museum.

It was honestly fun and educational. Our tour guide, David, was awesome. Just remember your hat and sunscreen. The gift shops was a bit too expensive for my wallet. But overall I would recommend going.

The Big Hole and Mine Museum is a state-of-the-art tourist facility. Great tour guide (the famous David), incredible displays, and an excellent audio visual presentation. Walk around the beautiful Old Town where shops of the early 1900's have been preserved in minute detail. Spotless bathrooms. Super impressed with Kimberley - clean and well maintained.

It was a great experience! Anyone who is even mildly fascinated with history would really love the tour and 20-minute movie that teaches you more about the historical significance of this place! I would highly recommend going towards the earlier after because they closed up earlier at some kept points of the tour from 4-5 and have an alternate route that isn't quite the same experience as it would be normally. Still a great experience, though either way!

Great experience and awesome view of the Big Hole. There is also a restaurant with live music on site. At the entrance is also a Vintage Tram and for R10 they take you for n 15min ride. Kids loved it. You can also choose to take a tour with guide or explore on your own.

Definitely a must if you in the area. Tour guide David is a people's person who really enjoys his job & very knowledgeable. The old houses, the old feel, the old culture, how life was in that time. The restaurant's food & drink is amazing & worth your time & money.

I was lucky enough to visit on a Monday afternoon and enjoy a solo guided tour on a hot Monday afternoon on 10th February 2020. Hearing the harrowing stories of what the men went through to find diamonds made me wonder the extremes they suffered to earn a living. The place is rich in history an ideal stop over.

The BIG HOLE is truly just a huge hole filled with water. But the VERY interesting history behind this place. Mining brought Kimberly and the DE BEERS MINING group lots of money from diamonds. Many people came from all parts of the world to mine for gold. Cecil John Rhodes had his share in many claims of sites where he sold and became a very rich man.

Surprisingly more to see than one would think. There's a little historical 'museum' town outside that you can see without paying an entry fee. A short tram ride is available which takes a one out along the roads and back again. A quaint ride, but not essential. Once inside, the paid tour was enjoyable and interesting, much thanks to our excellent tour guide, David. The hole itself is impressive to view, but the history and information on diamonds really fleshes out the experience!

Great sites to see, amazing and a little scary but definitely a must visit when in Kimberley. Friendly service from security to ticket sales. Prepare R70 per adult for the big hole sights, then R150 for the entire guided experience (1 hour) inclusive of the museum.

(Translated by Google) It is said that Kimberley, the world's largest white diamond diamond mine in the mid-19C, was the largest hole in the world sold by a pickaxe and a shovel. Until the mine was abandoned in 1914, you can look around the mine where almost 2,700 kg of diamonds were excavated, and you can see various types of diamonds in a secure space. Meanwhile, it could be a product that can measure the depth of human oppression ... Firstly I was so glad the Big Hole isn't just a large Hole that you see and turn back and go home .lol that would be very obvious and anticlimactic. To my surprise it's not just a Hole but a whole recreated and well maintained life size exhibition of a small mining town and the Big hole museum and tour was very fun and informative. The guides really know the area well and you even get to watch a short film on the history off that big hole you came to see .

  • 5/5 Jaco B. 5 months ago on Google
The upgrades done are very well done. Cinema with short history movie gave a lot of insight into the history of the live and history of a settler. The rest of the museum is very well maintained. Utilities and shops excellent and wheelchair friendly.

The Big Hole is a great tourist attraction. We enjoyed the museum, short movie and guided tour as well as some light meals at the coffee shop and a walk around the town. Highly recommended for anyone who visits Kimberley!

Great history but not a friendly family to visit. The movie they show in the cinema is a bit disappointing and scares the kids. I was there with my kids 5 and 3 they were scared. Just some advice. Warn the parents or advice them not to take the kids in the cinema. The movie doesn't make sense in any way. Put warning signs when you walk in the explosion or explosive area. My kids had bad experience with the noise and scary bombs going on.

So sad, just a shell of what it was 20 odd years ago. Saddest part was not being able to let my daughter find some gems in those panning stations they had before. There is a restaurant area to the left of the main entrance but it is not advertised very well. The little cafe inside isn’t worth eating a big meal at. Some old ladies inside the main tourist shop still holding the fort. Glad I went.

Visiting here is an ABSOLUTE MUST for every single South African and tourist. It is Beautiful. It is nostalgic. It is informative. It is entertaining. It is just pure Class! David, our host - was well informed, spoke with great enthusiasm and kept our attention - though he didn't need to. The place is remarkable. the legends, stories, history and facts are mind blowing. It is very warm in Kimberley - so come prepared. The people are super friendly (challenge to you PE!) - it's very clean, COVID protocols are still in place and very safe. I swear - if this delightful town had a beach - it'd be paradise. Thank you Kimberley Dave!

The tour was great and enlightening, unfortunately the building has no safes available to store sensitive possessions or water for their café.

  • 4/5 Werner S. 4 months ago on Google
If you are into engineering and human accomplishments, this is an amazing stop. I recommend a guided tour to explain the details and especially the diamond vault. The observation bride to the hole is an amazing view and experience, not for vertigo sufferers, though. There are some curio shops and jewelers and a restaurant in tye visitors center as well as a pub in the old Town.

The Big Hole in Kimberley is a must see if you have never before. To stand and look over the hole doesn't take up much of your time but I do recommend walking around the old mining village museum they have on the outside which is free of charge. It is very interesting

Worth while doing the tour and experiencing being down a mine. Enjoyed the history of The Big Hole. Well done. Do treat yourself there!

What an informative and rich experience , we attended the last tour which was at 3pm , the tour included a 20 min video of the history of Kimberly and Diamonds, thereafter a informative guided tour to the big hole and the under ground mines , and finally the volt. The tour guide David was amazing... Unfortunately the tram was not working however we did enjoy a lovely stroll through the old town... You can indulge in a mini photo shoot at old prison cells, the photographer is the sweetest....

An authentic diamond mining history experience. The movie is very interesting as well. Going through the mining tunnels was an experience not only for us adults but also for the children. The fact there are places to buy food is also a bonus as one can literally spend the whole day in the attraction exploring everything that relates to the big hole. The tram is another win and it's quite an interesting experience as one explores the historic city of Kimberley fondly known as the Diamond city or the Big Y by the local communities. The gift shop is also another gem. The jewellery shop adds a touch of class. The replica domond viewing in the safe was also a mind opening experience.

I visited The Big hole for the first time since i have moved to Kimberley 2019 and only this year i had the urge to go and i was amazed by the story of how it all started and to Mr David our tour guy he is very brilliant the history of the Big hole is on his lips .

  • 4/5 Kefentse M. 7 months ago on Google
We didn't have time to tour the entire mine. We paid R70 per person to only see the hole. You get a blue wrist ticket, which shows that you are restricted to the hole(the actual hole) area only. I think it's about R140 per person to tour the entire mine on the surface and underground. There are museums, gift shops and a coffee shop. Remember to wear comfortable shoes..

  • 3/5 Jamie C. 4 years ago on Google
Well it's a big hole in the ground with water in it. The visit was just OK. I don't really know what more they could do to make it better, unless you turn it into a Theme Park (joking) If you are in Kimberly then yeah it's worth seeing, would I take someone there specifically to see it, probably not. Maybe I am missing the point but it's just.... OK
