Arrived here on Hurtigruten's MS Nordlys during a round voyage from Bergen to Kirkenes and back. We were out on an excursion to the Russian Border by bus and returned after calling at a couple of other places. We then had a quick look in the small gift shop on the way back to the ship. The dock does what it is supposed to do and is fairly basic but that is all that is necessary. Nice Welcome to Kirkenes sign on the building shows they care, at least. Interesting town to visit and well worth getting off the ship to look around. For many it is the start or finish of their Hurtigruten experience as it has an airport.

We visited Kirkenes for the first time in December 22nd. We walked from the ship to the city center in minus 19 degrees. Everything was covered in snow and it looked breathtaking. The short trip lasted just under two hours.

There is not much at the terminal in Kirkenes. The kiosk has a waiting room for passengers, toilets and sells souvenirs. It is also a place where you can obtain tax refunds for goods bought in Norway. It is a fifteen minute walk into town from here.

Whilst sailing along a deep fjord into Kirkenes on MS Nordlys we started going through floating thin ice which got much thicker towards Hurtigruten dock at the quay. There was no wind, we had a cloudless blue sky and sunshine. It was an unexpected experience. We loved it there. Most passengers walked towards town or went on a tour. From the ship I could see over the narrow peninsular to see a large part of the frozen fjord, the scenery was fabulous. I can’t wait to return next year with two new knees to explore this place myself :)

Today we are with MS. Nordlys in Kirkenes. This is the northernmost point. We now head south again to Trondheim. Temperature today -16 degrees. No wind so easy to endure. Daylight brightness at this time is between 10:00 and 2 p.m. We have night darkness here from 3 p.m. .

Berth for Hurtigruten ships. Harbor area with short distances if you want to buy something. Small souvenir shop right next door.

Ship voyage

In May we moored in Kirkenes with Hurtigruten in beautiful weather and took a tour to the Russian border. The landscape was very beautiful and impressive and visiting the border was very exciting.

Yes, great for stretching your feet. And you can visit the ice hotel and go dog sledding
