Dominican
Fathers
in
Mosul
The
Latin
Church/Church
of
the
Dominican
Fathers
of
Mosul
is
located
in
the
southern
sector
of
the
old
city
of
Mosul
surrounded
by
the
Ottoman
walls,
at
the
crossroads
of
Nineveh
and
Al-Shadhayani.
Since
1750,
members
of
the
Dominican
Mission
in
Mesopotamia,
Kurdistan
and
Armenia
have
been
key
actors
as
experts
and
witnesses
in
Iraq's
Christian
history
to
the
dangers
facing
Christians
in
the
Middle
East.
The
first
Dominican
church
in
Mosul
was
built
by
the
Italians.
Between
1866
and
1873
the
large
Latin
church
of
the
Dominican
Fathers
was
built
in
France.
It
is
an
imposing,
massive
building
with
a
longitudinal
design,
“in
the
Roman-Byzantine
style”,
with
three
navees
and
five
sections.
The
bell
tower
is
located
to
the
north,
between
two
small
churches
connected
to
the
main
building.
In
1876,
Empress
Eugenie
de
Montijo,
wife
of
Napoleon
III,
provided
the
necessary
funding
to
build
the
bell
tower
in
Iraq,
which
was
installed
in
1880
as
a
donation
from
the
French
government.
This
was
at
the
request
of
the
French
consul
in
Mosul,
and
this
famous
clock
gave
the
time
to
the
entire
city.
The
monastery
was
restored
in
2000,
and
was
looted
and
destroyed
ten
years
later,
during
the
years
of
the
occupation
of
Mosul
by
ISIS.
The
Latin
Church/Church
of
the
Dominican
Fathers
in
Mosul,
vandalized
during
the
ISIS
occupation
(2014-2017)
and
during
the
battle
to
liberate
the
city
(2017).
