One among the oldest churches and tourist attractions of Fort Kochi. Constructed by Portugese and elevated to Cathedral status in 1558. Later it was partially demolished by the British and was renovated in 1887. This ancient church was elevated to Basilica status in 1984 and its presently one among the 10 Basilica Churches in Kerala. We reached there last saturday noon. Church was closed. We waited there for some minutes and to our surprise, it was opened. 😊 we entered the church and spent some time.. The Gothic style interior paintings, ancient sculptures, wooden ceilings, carvings and glass windows are indeed something that you should see for yourself. If you are in fort kochi, then do add this to ur bucket list. 👍sharing some pics of the interiors 😊

A review that has been long due. This is a Basilica which is open for worship, but at the same time is a very important tourist attraction in Fort Kochi. The present building is just a little older than 100 years, however the church has been in existence for nearly 200 years now. There is no entrance fees and is open to visitors when there are no prayers happening. Pro Tip - Best time to visit is after 4 PM because the lights that pass through the colored glass windows makes the inside much more beautiful

Constructed by the Portuguese and now considered as one of the most magnificent places to visit in Fort Kochi, the Santa Cruz Cathedral Basilica is one of the eight Basilicas in India. The basilica serves as the cathedral church of the Diocese of Cochin and is visited frequently by devotees of Christianity because of the same. The fine architecture of the church attracts tourists every year that wish to admire the grandiose and opulent style. Set up against a backdrop of clear blue skies and with its exteriors painted in white, the church exudes a quaint old charm. The medieval styled architecture with huge arches, painted ceiling, and mesmerizing paintings make it a must visit tourist destination. The Santa Cruz Cathedral is one of the few places in India where spirituality and religion embrace artistry and architectural grandeur. Distance - 450.0 m from Fort Kochi bus stand. Timings - 9 AM to 1 PM and 3 PM to 5 PM. Entry fees - No entry fee.

This church was built by the Portuguese and elevated to a Cathedral by Pope Paul 1V in 1558. Later the British demolished the structure and Bishop Dom Gomez Vereira commissioned a new building in 1887. Consecrated in 1905, Santa Cruz was proclaimed a Basilica by the Pope John Paul II in 1984. It is one of the 8 basilicas in India and one of the oldest churches in India. The Church has two lofty spires and bright, white-washed exterior and a pastel-colored interior. The interiors of the church are mostly Gothic. The columns decorated with frescoes and murals, the seven large canvas paintings on the passion and death on the Cross, especially the painting of the Last Supper, modeled on the famous painting of Leonardo da Vinci and the beautiful stained glass windows add to the artistic grandeur of the place.

We visited the church on a Sunday evening, when the mass was going on so we couldn't visit the church inside, just took some photos from outside and we returned back from there. The church is one of the heritages in kerala. It has a wonderful Gothic architecture that you can experience here in kerala. If you are in kochi- kerala, then you must visit this church.

Santa Cruz Cathedral Basilica, situated in the heart of Fort Kochi, is not just a church but a vivid tapestry of history and architectural splendor. Standing as a silent testament to the bygone eras, this basilica effortlessly bridges the gap between the past and the present. History: The origins of Santa Cruz Cathedral Basilica trace back to 1505 when the first Portuguese settlers reached the shores of Kochi. Given permission by the Rajah of Kochi to build a place of worship, the church was originally constructed as a testament to their newfound trading relations. Over the years, the church faced the wrath of changing colonial powers, leading to its demolition by the Dutch, only to be rebuilt in the later years. In 1887, it was promoted to a cathedral by Pope Leo XIII and subsequently declared a basilica in 1984. This architectural marvel has witnessed the changing tides of history, from colonial struggles to becoming a revered place of worship in the region. The basilica's architecture is a harmonious blend of Indo-European designs. As you step inside, the ornate interiors, coupled with the beautiful stained glass windows, narrate stories from the scriptures, invoking a sense of reverence and awe. The high vaulted ceilings and the intricate detailing on the pulpit and altar showcase the exquisite craftsmanship of the bygone era. Apart from its architectural grandeur, what makes the Santa Cruz Cathedral Basilica special is its welcoming atmosphere. Irrespective of one's faith or belief system, the church offers a sanctuary of peace and serenity. Santa Cruz Cathedral Basilica, Fort Kochi, is not just a place of worship but a living relic of history, art, and spirituality. Whether you're a history buff, an art enthusiast, or someone seeking spiritual solace, this basilica welcomes you with open arms. A must-visit when in Fort Kochi! Very beautiful! A large cathedral situated within a large campus. It is closed on every forest Friday of the month and that is when I went. So unfortunately couldn't go in. If you are the religious type then have to time the visit according to the visitors timings (pls refer to the timings notice photo attached herewith). Else, it can be visited as a quick drop in to see the nice exterior architecture.

Great architecture! It's one of the beautiful churches that I've visited. It can be crowded during the mass. So if you wanna see the place better the best time is early in the morning or afternoon after the mass. This place is only walking distance from my hotel and you can find atms and restaurant nearby.

One of the main tourist attraction of fort Kochi. We visited a Sunday afternoon so the church was closed and only wandered around it. The structure and built was done by Portuguese. Surroundings were neat and clean. Washrooms were ok. Architecture is the main attraction of this church. Was easily accessible from any crowd. Tourists visiting time is given in the photo below.

One of the best architectural building which is built on 1505 but it has undergone some demolition and reconstruction on 1905 into present day structure. This church is very well preserved. This church is not entertained as a museum so the visitors are allowed to enter the church only between 9am to 1 pm. And also visitors are not allowed to enter the convention area which is closed most of the outside visitors time.

The Portuguese founded this Roman Catholic church, which was later obtained by the British. The edifice is stunning, featuring two towering spires and Gothic interiors adorned with sturdy wooden pulpits and altars. A Christian wedding took place during our visit, where the bride donned a white sari and a flower crown while the groom wore a traditional Kerala dhoti called a Mundu. This was a remarkable fusion of cultures. The Fort Kochi area boasts numerous churches, but this one is a must-see for its magnificence and historical significance.

This church contributes unbelievable magnificent expressions about Almighty God Lord Jesus from all angles after visit here. Importance of Lord, his sacrifice and preachings are highlighted with good artistic, architectural, historic background. One of the best Basilicas deserves high appreciations for this wonderful monument built by Portuguese in 15-16 th century. Britishers, King Raja of Kochi at that time who gave consent for building and renovating beautifully leave good imprints are memorable. The beauty of this church is shape of building, interior decoration with everlasting painting, fresh baby immersion bath box for good future, the story behind church on front entrance walls, surroundings and an erection pillar contributed from donors One wants to stay for longer period inside may be positive vibes are plenty.

The Santa Cruz Cathedral Basilica is located at Fort Kochi and is one of the eight Basilicas in India. Located on K.B. Jacob Road in Fort Kochi, this beautiful roman catholic church serves as the cathedral church of the Diocese of Kochi. The church is the second cathedral built by the Portuguese. The columns are decorated with frescoes, and there are seven large canvas paintings along with the beautiful stained glass windows. The ceiling holds some beautifully painted images depicting the images of Via Crucis of Christ. This Cathedral holds a special significance for the Christians residing in the city of Kochi as it celebrates the dawn of their religion in the land of India.

Beautiful, calm and Peaceful. One of the 5 Latin Basilicas in Kerala and among the 24 Basilicas in India. From Wikipedia "It was built originally by the Portuguese and elevated to a cathedral by Pope Paul IV in 1558, was spared by the Dutch conquerors who destroyed many Catholic buildings. Later the British demolished the structure and João Gomes Ferreira [pt] commissioned a new building in 1887. Consecrated in 1905, Santa Cruz was proclaimed a basilica by Pope John Paul II in 1984." Interesting: You can see "Dhwaja Stambham' at the entrance of the church just like all Hindu Temples in India.

The Santa Cruz Cathedral Basilica in Fort Kochi is one of the eight Basilicas in India and the second oldest Diocese of India. The history of Santa Cruz Cathedral Basilica dates back to the sixteenth century and begins with the arrival of Portuguese missionaries in 1500 CE. The foundation stone was laid on May 3, 1505, the feast day of the 'Invention of the Holy Cross', hence the church was named Santa Cruz PS: There are the seven large canvas paintings including a beautiful reproduction of the 'Last Supper' by Leonardo da Vinci are a real feast for the eyes

A very nicely built basilica. The surrounding is very clean. Inside the cathedral, the pillars have paintings that depict the life journey of Jesus Christ. Even inside of the roof has very beautiful paintings. Above the statue of Jesus Christ there is the large and beautiful painting of The Last Supper.
