#BowBarracksFest2019 #ChristmasEve Bow Barracks is a locality in the central Kolkata region. The locality is a small hub of mainly Anglo-Indian population who have lived here for generations. Bow Barracks is located in central Kolkata — just behind the Bowbazar police station, off the Central Avenue (now Chittaranjan Avenue). The Bow Barracks was a garrison's mess built for the army during World War I. It has acquired a reputation of sorts for its Christmas celebrations🎄🎅🔔❄. Wish you all a Merry Christmas & a Very Happy New Year 2020.

Mesmerizing. Colonial flavour and a big hug from the past. Literally liked the buildings and the inmates. Visited during X Mas and loved the local involvement. Kolkata is absolute imperfect with this colonial red bricks, the cakes and cuisine. Mind blowing. Must visit while in Kolkata. Not even in X Mas time.

Bow Barracks Forever. When we stepped on the lane, the century old red brick buildings coupled with louvered green windows reminded me of the famous film of Anjan Dutt made on the Anglo-Indian community of Kolkata. It was a quiet afternoon. A street dog was sleeping on the road. Some residents were looking at the pedestrians from their balconies. There were some lighted candles on the table in front of Jesus and Mother Mary. The lazy slanting shadows of the walls were announcing silently that it was the time for an afternoon nap. You can find structural similarities of these buildings with old historic Spanish colonial towns. During World War-I, Bow Barracks was built for the soldiers as a garrisons' mess in 1918. But the soldiers didn't move in. Later, several Anglo-Indian families started to live here. Christmas in Kolkata is synonymous with two places i.e., Park Street and Bow Barracks. During Christmas, the balconies, the lanes are brightly lighted up. At that time, Bow Barracks draw large crowd, couples dancing salsa on the street. You can find lip-smacking momos, kebabs, fuchkas here. There are 132 flats in this Anglo-Indian enclave. Today, not only Anglo-Indians but also Chinese, Bengali and Muslims live here giving it a multicultural identity. On the one end of the lane, there is Manackjee Rustomjee Dharmashala for Parsi Travellers and Bauddha Dharmankur Sabha is on the other end of the lane. The true essence of cosmopolitan Kolkata, isn't it?

A beautiful place in the heart of Kolkata. The total area is not so big. Here the Anglo Indian community of Kolkata reside in a small stretch. The buildings are brightly coloured with Red. This is about 4-5 mins walk from Chandni Chowk metro station, it is located exactly behind the Bowbazar Police Station. Christmas is the appropriate time to go there. A small scale celebration among these people is really enjoyable & you could grab some delicious foods made by them.

This place was built by the British during world war 1 as a barrack for the Axis soldiers...but they refused to stay here and camped at Fort William. This place was then given away for local Anglo Indian community. A must visit place during Christmas. Red buildings and an old world charm is a characteristic of this place, located near Chandni Metro station

This place is no way distinguishable from rest of the city except on the Christmas and New Year Eve. However the houses on the lane are not of the typical bengali architecture, they consist thr Anglo touch. On the Christmas Eve, the residents decorate and light up the place, play music, provide stalls selling various in-house items.

I visited this place on 23rd of December 2023 first time. I really like this place and enjoyed a lot. If you are coming to Kolkata or you staying in Kolkata then do visit this place during Christmas time. Whenever you visit this place during a year please buy and taste “CHANAR CAKE” & CHICKEN PATTIES from J.N.BARUA Cake Shop. If you want to visit this shop during Christmas or New Year time then please have patience and standing a long queue for a long time.

The journey from Calcutta to Kolkata has its own history to tell. One such part of the story is Bow Barracks. Located in Central Kolkata, Bow Barracks was originally built as a garrison's mess for the European army of World War I. It now houses the Anglo Indian and Chinese Indian communities for more than the past 100 years. In a narrow lane between Hare Street and Bohu Bazar police station are these six blocks of red-bricked three-story buildings with green windows. It is decorated and lit beautifully during the time of Christmas and New Year.

A wonderful place for Christmas celebrations, decorations and lightings. Bow Barracks is situated in central Kolkata and Christmas is celebrated for longest time over here stretching from 23rd dec to 1st Jan. Everyyear this time the barrack is beautifully decorated with lights , food stalls and functions are held every day . On Christmas Eve Santa Clause comes and gives gifts to children. However, this year due to Corona Pandemic(2021), there was no food stalls and functions were not held to avoid crowd but the place was beautifully decorated. If you have missed it this year , do visit next year.

We went to Bow Barracks on both Christmas Eve and Christmas day. It is an abode of Anglo-Indian families. The lanes are lined with red brick buildings. The humble Christmas celebration is visited by many and enjoyed by all. Local residents sell food items at that time. I found a local aunty selling pork momos there, which I don't think you will get at many places in Kolkata. Also, Barua's off beat cakes are delicacies. Moreover, if you know whom to ask, you might find home made wines. We had bought Ginger Wine which was absolutely a delight to drink. This place is definitely worth a visit during Christmas time.

These barracks are very old barracks in central kolkata built during World War for use of military personnel. After independence Anglo Indians of Kolkata got settled here. It is near bowbazar area of Kolkata. In Sunday morning breakfast is prepared by the families here to sell. It is a very famous breakfast joint, though I could not make it up. We went to see the lights displayed during Christmas 🌲 by the Anglo Indian families staying here. Lights and decorations are splendid. We enjoyed. Many families left kolkata since then. Remaining Anglo Indian families are keeping the glory of the place intact.

A heritage of lane of the city, that will always cheer your hearts and take to back to an era of nostalgia. Its a must visit place during the Christmas week. The ambiance, the energy, the people creates a smile in your heart. This place is said to be a very small huh of Anglo-Indian culture, who have been living for generations. As per history, this place was a military base built during the World War I, however there isn't enough records to prove this fact. But overall its a symbol of heritage for the city of joy.

Bow Barracks is a locality in the central kolkata region. The locality is a small hub of Anglo Indian population who have lived here for generations. The families living here do not pay any rent for their stay in Bow Barracks as the building is owned by the KIT and they have refused to accept a meagre amount of ₹30 paid as rent throughout the years without any increment in rent by the families for their stay. The government has declared this building "Unsafe & dangerous", plans are afoot to build a high-rise and other structures in its place. However despite all the short-comings this place does have a huge historical impact on the city. The people residing are warm and lively. Recently this place has turned out to be photographers' delight, but they seldom do consider the privacy of the residents. One need to take due permission from the association for any sort of photography or documentary.

Bow Barracks was originally built as a set of barracks or quarters for the British troops during the First World War. The troops were supposed to be allotted flats according to their ranks. However, they refused to settle down there and preferred to stay back at Fort William instead. It was built to house the soldiers of World War I and was later turned into apartments for the Anglo-Indian population of the city. The best time to visit Bow Barracks is during Christmas festivities when the neighbourhood is transformed into a wonderland.

In the heart of Kolkata's chaos, nestled behind a bustling police station, lies Bow Barracks. Think red-brick apartments straight out of a bygone era, buzzing with generations of Anglo-Indians. These folks have been squatting there since their great-grandparents were probably still rocking handlebar mustaches. The craziest part? Rent? Nah, not their thing. These residents have politely rejected the measly ₹30 monthly charge for decades, preferring to stay put in their historic haven. Talk about fierce community spirit! So, if you're ever in Kolkata, ditch the fancy hotels and hunt down Bow Barracks. You might just catch a glimpse of this vibrant, rent-resistant community in action.

An amazing destination to celebrate Christmas, the first of it's kind in Kolkata with the Anglo-Indian's celebrating the festive days with much fervour and joy. Park Street came in later to become another centre of attraction for Christmas and New Year celebrations. Bow Barracks is also a heritage spot in Kolkata with the houses in the locality going back to pre-independence days. The Anglo-Indian's decorate the similar looking buildings, the roads and sell food outside their house on Christmas. The food I must say is too good.

Visiting Bow Barracks on Christmas Day was an immersive experience into Kolkata's cultural heritage. The festive vibe was palpable, with vibrant decorations and joyous carol singing echoing through the red-brick streets. The sense of community and celebration was heartwarming, creating a unique atmosphere filled with cheer. However, while the ambiance was delightful, the food options fell short of expectations. Apart from the homemade cakes, the available food was both lackluster in taste and significantly overpriced. This aspect was disappointing, especially considering the otherwise spirited and inviting setting of the celebrations. Nevertheless, the warmth of the community, the cultural significance, and the overall festive atmosphere made the visit to Bow Barracks on Christmas a memorable experience, offering a glimpse into Kolkata's rich heritage and celebratory traditions.

It is residential place for "Anglo-Indian" community in Kolkata. Christmas is celebrated in a very enthusiastic manner. If one wishes to avoid the crowd of Park Street area but still wishes to witness authentic Christmas celebration, then they may visit here. People are always happy. Another thing is that home made foods are sold here. So one can try this also. Meat Ball soup is famous here. Spicy chicken and momos are also available. Nice to bring your kids here for knowing a piece of History.

Bow barracks is a set of barracks set up in kolkata to house the American soldiers during the second World War. Cut to today. It remains a settlement for anglo indians in the city. Many of them have left for greener pastures but there are still a handful of people who are living here. The place is located near bowbazar police station and comes alive during the Christmas season.
