It's landmark from way before independence. India first coin was made under British government. Still play important role in Indian Economy. Should be opened for public occasionally.

The India Government Mint is situated in Taratala on Diamond Harbour Road,Kolkata. It was first established in 1757, and was located in a building next to the old fort – where the GPO (General Post Office) stands today.Earlier it was called the Calcutta Mint and used to produce coins with the mint name on it.

The India Government Mint operates four Mints in the country for the production of coins, kolkata mints is one of them.. India Government Mint, Kolkata was first established in 1757, and was located in a building next to the black hole in the old fort – where the GPO (General Post Office) stands today. It was called the kolkata Mint house. In the late 1930s foundation work for a new mint was completed at Taratala, close to Alipur and construction was to have completed by early 1942. However WORLD WAR II, brought all construction to a halt. It was completed in early 1950s. The Alipore Mint was opened by Finance Minister of Government of India Shree C.D DESHMUKH on 19 March 1952. The full operation for the coinage and preparation of medals, decorations and badges started in Alipore Mint from this date. In addition to production of coins for domestic use also produces coins for other nations. Calcutta mint has no mark under the date of the coin (year of issue). Or it has a 'C' mark. It was unique because it had not chosen any mark because this mint is the first mint in India. Made by grand architect Mulk Raj Malhotra. Address: Diamond Harbour Road, New Alipore, Kolkata - 700053 (Near Majerhat Railway Station)

Worst service provided by staff. No response to calls and emails. I am writing after 4 months of going in circles. They are least interested to see if phone lines are working or in order. No customer service channel to lodge complaints. They have IAS officers in key positions and none of their contact numbers are available. Spmcil 's PR team is even worst than others who can never can be contacted. They should be the main escalation point. Typical government office and sad they are least productive.

This is one of the oldest Mint in West Bengal, India which produces Indian money for long time. The architecture of the old building is worth to see from outside. High security does allow to go inside the area.
