Before 1982 this lake used to be a marshy swamp area with some paddy fields in between. Today it's a large and beautiful lake with the parliament complex of Sri Lanka located in an island the center. Due to security reasons public isn't allowed to get into the lake. But you can drive and walk around part of it and enjoy its scenic view. There is also a walking and jogging track along one bank. Beware, there are also some crocodiles in the lake.
