Moon Plains or Sandathenna is a plain situated close to Seetha Eliya in Nuwara Eliya. It is situated inside a farm which is being managed by the Agricultural Department, hence you have to obtain a ticket to visit this place. You need to hire a safari jeep at the entrance to travel on Moon Plains & reach the viewpoint. It will roughly take an hour for the round trip. The viewpoint provides a 360 degree view and a majority of the tallest mountain peaks in Sri Lanka are visible from here. Best time to visit is early in the morning around 7 am and if you are lucky, you will see some animals as well.

Such a beautiful place, best visited early morning, by about 8am. They have defenders that take you throug the plain and explain everything on the way. For locals it's about 2000 LKR but don't quote me on it, I am not exactly sure. The guide we got was well versed in what he spoke. The final stop point is amazingly beautiful. You can gaze upon 9 out of the 10 tallest mountains in Sri Lanka from the view point. This is not so popular yet among the travelers, but you should totally see this place if you come to Nuwara Eliya. I would say this is the most captivating thing in Nuwara Eliya that you can see right now. Every other place is too beaten by visitors. Be mindful, weekends can get crowded.

An amazing place to visit which is not popular among the visitors to NuwaraEliya. You have to buy a ticket and they provide you the transport to the place. The scenery is marvellous. You'll be able to get the experience of 360° view of a very beautiful scenery.

I recently visited Moon Plains in Nuwara Eliya, and I was blown away by the beauty of this place. From the moment I entered, I was struck by the natural splendor of the rolling hills, lush vegetation, and stunning panoramic views. They offer a safari jeep tour, and I have to say, the jeep ride itself was an adventure. The jeeps are comfortable and well-maintained, and the price is reasonable (3000LKR). The drivers explain everything when you are at the viewpoint.

Nestled 6,200 feet above mean sea level, Moon Plains offers visitors a spectacular 360 degree unique picturesque view of surrounding mountain ranges such as Pidurutalaga (8,281 feet), Single Tree Mountain ((6,890 feet) Kikiliyamana Mountain (7,339 feet), Great Western Mountain (7,257 feet), Konical Hill Mountain (7,116 feet) Kirigalpoththa Mountain (7,835 feet), Thotupola Mountain (7,737 feet), Hakgala Mountain (7,110 feet) and Namunukula Mountain (6,667 feet). Moon Plains is a landscape with a grandeur view and is gaining in popularity as the "second world's end". Moon Plains is surrounded by cloud forests and unique diversity of flora and fauna and has similar characteristics to that of Horton Plains. Unlike the excursion to Horton Plains, which takes 6 to 8 hours, the excursion to Moon Plains can be completed in 2 hours. Thus, if you have a tight travel schedule the excursion to Moon Plains would be a good alternative experience to Horton Plains. Access to Moon Plains is from the Seetha Eliya Farm, which is a 15 minutes drive from Spring Acre. From the Farm specially authorized safari jeeps are available for hire to travel the 3 km distance to the Moon Plains viewing point.

Great experience. Every srilankan must visit this place. Very good relaxing. We can't directly go to this place by our vehicles. We have to catch up a local vehicle. There are so many ridge and groove on the road.

A place where you can get a 360 degree view of a scenic background of mountain ranges. Early morning and evenings are the best time to visit this place.

Never seen a beautiful plain as this as long as i know. Extremely windy when u start to climb in to the top. Be aware of your hats and scarfs. I think probably you can fly a glider just pushing from the cliff, It's an authentic feeling.

One of the best views you can get in Sri Lanka up hill. You can take your vehicle to the view point. But the entrance ticket and hire an off road truck from them the cost for the truck was 1500 rupees (in 2023) and six people can go in one trip. The driver acts as a tour guide as well and explain the location and what are the sceneries we can see. Only issue is we get very limited time to stay there as the waiting list is high at the entrance. Get prepared and go. No drones allowed at the viewpoint without prior permission.

It’s a lovely place, but the wait for jeeps was about one and half hours. Can stay only 20 mins and the drive takes around 40 mins both ways. I feel this should be arranged better so that people do not have to wait for hours for the jeeps. Overall, even though the view is breathtaking, the long wait for the Jeep’s and the limited time allowed at the plains makes it not worth while.

This is a lovely place for you to live with nature. A nice view from up. But due to mist you will see nothing. So travel on sunny days.

We have to buy tickets from the small counter. However, we have to pay additionally for the drivers in safari jeeps. They are not allowing to enter private vehicles which we have to pay for safari jeeps. Overall place is beautiful and nice view.
