A monument to the nineteenth century Polish painter, Jan Mateiko. He is well known for his large canvasses depicting historical events. The monument does a good job of commemorating his endeavors, by framing the background as a painting - or rather a tableu - which the seated Jan Mateiko is observing with interest and curiosity. This site used to have a monument to the Soviet army, which has now been relicated.

📷The monument, and in fact an installation in tribute to one of the greatest Polish painters - Jan Matejko, created by the famous artist Jan Tu was unveiled in 2013, so I encourage clever mathematicians to determine on their own which anniversaries of birth and death. The sculpture even tempts you to take a selfie next to it. I encourage you to find yourself in the frame. It's worth stopping by.

This is one of the newest addictions to the already massive inventory of Krakow's statues. It honors Jan Matejko, a great painter of Polish historical subjects. Most non-Poles have never heard of him however, and these days, a whole lot of Poles have not either. The statue itself is not my favorite. Cool idea, with the frame, but I don't think it really works.

It is a statue of the famous Polish painter Jan Matejko (1838-1893), who was born and lived in nearby Florianska Street. Jan Matejko earned his name by painting some big canvasses with historical events, particularly the 'Battle of Grunwald', and 'Union of Lublin.' His works are also on display at the Vatican museums. The sculpture of his is done by Jan Tutai in 2013. Previously there was a tomb of a soviet soldier which was transferred to the military cemetery. The area is also named after Jan Matejko including an adjacent street. It is a nice sculpture as the square indicates the large canvasses that he once painted. As it is blended with the surrounding natural settings, many a time tourists fail to notice it.

Inside Planty Park, very close to the Barbican and St. Florian's Gate, on a red pedestal there is a large frame within which, sitting on an armchair, is the statue of Jan Matejko, famous (in Poland I imagine) Polish painter.

Jan Alojzy Matejko, also known as Jan Mateyko (24 June 1838 1 November 1893) was a Polish painter, a leading 19th-century exponent of history painting, known for depicting nodal events from Polish history. His works include large scale oil paintings such as Rejtan (1866), the Union of Lublin (1869), the Astronomer Copernicus, or Conversations with God (1873),[4] or the Battle of Grunwald (1878).
