Laid out with 70 large well-spaced metal chairs meant to symbolise departure, as well as subsequent absence, the entire square has essentially been turned into an odd, but iconic memorial to the victims of the Kraków Ghetto. A place for candles and reflection was created in the former German guardhouse at the north end of the square, however the gesture rings hollow considering the space is always locked.

This memorial is dedicated to the thousands of Jewish of Cracow who were forced to live here in a ghetto untill the last of them was deported to a concentration or death camp. Each chair resembles thousand Jewish victims.

Yes, as some others have already written, the history of the place is oppressive and certainly even more impressive with knowledge of it and a guide. Anyone who doesn't know or doesn't want to know anything about this will see an empty square with buildings all around that are partly in need of renovation and won't be able to understand the significance. Only the chairs scattered around the square might make those who don't know think twice. Given the scope and background, perhaps more information should be provided here.

This square with Metal chairs symbolise the departure😔They have gathered them together at the square before departure 😔 it's very close to Schindler's factory and the river. Many restaurants and bars around.

Most traces of the Jewish ghetto are probably gone now but this memorial is a reminder. Not a lot to see or do but worth visiting once for the history, imo.

It’s hard to give any memorial anything less than 5 stars, but this one has meaning and intent which makes it more than deserving. This memorial was dedicated to the thousands of Jews of Kraków who were forcibly moved from their homes to live here in a ghetto until they all had been sent to a concentration/death camp or killed before ever leaving. Each chair resembles thousands of Jews. victims

This Art Installation of empty chairs symbolises the abandoned personal belongings of Jews after the liquidation of the ghetto and commemorates victims of the Holocaust. The square was the starting point for deportations to the death camps.

Very impressive place. It went through a lot of suffering during that terrible ghetto. It's a spacious place. In this memorial, in that installation, everything is done minimalist. You don't need more than that. We all remember the tragedy of the 30s and 40s of the 20th century.

Each chair represents 1000 Jewish people who lived in Krakow before the start of WW2. Sobering but important memorial just a short walk from the New Jewish Cemetery. Worth the visit.

powerful memorial. my family and i went there and sat in silence for a bit. i recommend learning a little bit about the memorial and about what happened to jews in krakow in wwii. the history is fascinating, and it makes appreciating the memorial so much easier. if you want a good place to learn some of that history, check out schindler's factory (which is nearby!). you will learn so much if you get a guided tour at that museum.

A last tribute to all jews who believed they were being resettled how ever their chairs were left behind as they were in fact taken to the gas chambers.

If going to Schindlers Factory, you should include the Plac Bohaterow Ghetta and the Apteka Pod Orlem - those should all be done together in a go.
