Located in the heart of Leipzig, visitors can experience contemporary history up close. The museum shows many original documents and objects and the exhibition is very attractive. I was very impressed after the tour. Admission is also free! Thank you for this opportunity.

5 stars are still not enough. Brilliant exhibition about life in the GDR. Very exciting and lots of good exhibits. It's best to come at 9 a.m. when everything is still empty.

We are absolutely thrilled with this exhibition and can recommend it to everyone. Here you can find out everything about the origins of the GDR up to its fall and the period afterwards. There are many exhibits, interactive opportunities, listening stations and videos. Our daughter (8) found it very interesting and wasn't bored, quite the opposite. As children of the GDR, we can only say that this gives a very good impression of life in the GDR. There is no entrance fee, everything is barrier-free. However, due to its location in the center of Leipzig, you first have to find a parking space. There is also a toilet and there was also a special exhibition on the upper floor. You can safely go here with school classes.

Visit the museum to understand the value of history through the objects on display. For the next generation to better understand history, understand the nature and life of people with war! I was very impressed with the statue in front of the door!

A must visit on a trip to Leipzig, one of the best museums we have been to. Entry was free but we would have happily paid for it. It covered life under the GDR providing a view of everyday life. We visited in the morning during the week and it was not busy, taking us an hour to an hour an a half to get through the main exhibit.

A great exhibition of contemporary history from the end of the Second World War to the post-war period, the emergence of the GDR, reunification and the period until today. Many exhibits, written and acoustic explanations, films, photos, documents. Incredibly large, you could also make 2 visits, the exhibition is free to visit. Great recommendation!

Insightful history museum on the DDR and the reunification of Germany. They have an English spoken tour you can follow over your phone. The museum is filles with examples from everyday life, some funny, some heartbreaking.

A great exhibition that makes a lot of things more understandable that people often only have a little knowledge of between “ossis” and “wessis”. Absolutely worth seeing. Tax money was invested wisely here!

Interesting museum which showcases the recent history of Leipzig from the communist times until German unification. Some thought provoking exhibits about freedom and choices. Entry is free.

Informative exhibition with many interesting exhibits! The exhibition is very beautiful and clearly laid out. Entry is free and so a visit is definitely worth it. We also took a guided tour, but this is not recommended. Some of the staff were also very unfriendly.

This is the best museum I’ve been to. There was so much information and the order and layout made perfect sense. There was a good mix of big picture info and individual stories to keep it diverse and interesting. The different ways of presenting information was done really well. At the start the exhibition outlines some questions it seeks to answer and I left feeling like I could answer all of them. Whoever designed this did an amazing job. Can’t believe this is free!

I went to this museum in the center of the city and it was free. It’s pretty interactive and i learnt so much related to Germany history especially during the GDR period. I think you can also arrange a group guide, because when i was there there was a big group visiting the museum.

An easy 2.5 hours spent in this excellent and fabulously curated museum of the GDR (life, politics, etc) from the end of WWII through German reunification. Use your phone and wifi for 25 stations of commentary in multiple languages as well as the interactive screens and the descriptions (in German and English).

Fantastic museum with a great exhibition. The special exhibition (music) was also a hit.

A very interesting museum which tries to maintain the necessary objectivity. On the other hand, only people who lived for a long time in the former GDR, like me, can feel and understand what this exhibition wants to express and teach visitors.

Thank you very much for the interesting, exciting and profound support through the very inspiring exhibition by Mr. Bachmann on March 8th, 2024. The participants in the language course want to delve deeper into the history of the division of Germany. Thank you for this motivation and arousing interest in this part of German history. thank you very much

Really cool museum of the DDR (permanent exhibition) and entrance is free.

One of the best educational, fun and immersive museums I have been to. It is free to enter and the first level is all about life in the GDR. The third level is another space where they had a digital expo which was also fantastic. The staff throughout the museum were so lovely and helpful.

A very impactful museum that freely educates on the social ills of communism and the downfalls of an overcontrolling government. I pray the world doesn't fall into the same snare again.

It's an interesting museum, but a bit smaller than I expected, good that it is free to enter.

One of the truly great museums of Europe, better than the Louvre IMO and its free. Covers East German history, everyday life, government surveillance and protests and unification with the BRD. Almost all exhibits have English translations or subtitles. Other museums in the former DDR also have these types of exhibits but like the one in Berlin, their exhibits are more geared to the nostalgic elements of DDR life. The third floor contains topical changing exhibits. When I was there, they had an exhibit on the expanding use of computers in our lives. Given the surveillance under the DDR, (see the Stasi museum in Berlin for an excellent presentation of this) this exhibit is an understandable warning about the possibilities of government overreach into the personal lives of its people. Included in this exhibit is an example of the Social Credit system in China. It is described only in German but try translating it to see the absurd Chinese government attempts at behavior modification. One way to score more points is to praise the government on social media. You will lose points if you do not visit your parents often enough. There will be consequences for those Chinese citizens with low social credit scores.

Very interesting, only some of it translated but certainly enough, and it's free.

Wow. This is the museum to see in Leipzig. Fascinating. Free. Those who don't speak German will have a bit more trouble, but there are some English translations here and there. I spent 3 hours here and certainly skipped parts. Very well presented. Very fair. And did I mention free?!!!!

Extremely interesting look into the DDR history from 1945 onwards. This is a must-see for anyone in Leipzig as it is free to see the main exhibition

Nice and interesting things to see and learn about the DDR period. Well displayed, but the order and interior design can be better.

  • 5/5 Jan K. 4 years ago on Google
Very interesting do dive into not so old history. The exposition is well prepared - one could spend hours to observe and enjoy (sometimes it's not possible to enjoy as one knows people were living those lifes) everything.

Simply the best DDR/post-war museum that I have ever seen - and I have seen quite a few of them. Their permanent exhibition is outstanding. This museum is a MUST for anyone with even the slightest interest in contemporary history.
