There was a small wait 30 minute when I arrive around 5.20 pm. Cards accepted. The super deluxe pork loin and pork loin were ordered. The super deluxe was softer and easier to bite into half and felt like it melted in my mouth but not enough. I think the pork need to be crispier. Worth a try!

Excellent Tonkatsu! Loved the pork tenderloin more than the cutlet, much more tender and lean. The curry had bits of pork in it and was so good with the pork cutlet and rice. The tea and sake are very good. Friendly and clean atmosphere.

I highly recommend this place! We made a reservation on Monday for dinner on Friday, after seeing its name on Michelin Guide Bib Gourmand. This is the first Tonkatsu I had from the guide, so I did not know what to expect. Tonkatsu and a big beer costed around 2500 yen per person. I have read the other reviews, and as they already state more fat means higher price, so prices are based on the cut and the amount of the fat. If something is “premium” etc then it is more fatty. More fatty means more juicy. Some revivers found the amount of fat too much, so we ordered two levels to be safe, but ended up liking fatty one better, because it was simply more juicy. I did not know Tonkatsu can be this crunchy outside and juicy inside. It also did not feel like it soaked much oil. I do not know how they made it, but I loved it. We were at tables behind the kitchen, so I did not see customer profile. Ones I saw was a couple around their 40s. Ryogoku generally has old people, so I assume mostly old Japanese people. Our table setting was nice. I am sure you can safely bring a date here, but we all smelled oil after our visit. That was the only downside. I will visit here again!

On a one-on-one basis, this was the single tastiest dish in my trip to Japan! The tonkatsu was juicy throughout (without being oily at all) is an understatement. Very well-seasoned, balanced and a pleasure to go through bite by bite. We also had some excellent yams and crab croquettes (bechamel sauce-based on the inside). A great find, with minimal waiting time (went around closing at ~ 14:00), caring service and amazing atmosphere. It’s an absolute jem for me (hidden or not, up to you to decide)!

My second visit (4 years later) and it was just as good as I remembered. The regular pork loin set is nice and juicy and fatty. The batter is light, crunchy and delicious. The pork in the curry set unfortunately is a bit drier. The iced tea provided is refreshing. They have an English menu. Total for 4 adults for lunch was 6100 yen. Amazing value.

Walked a distance to get here and got in before the last order. One of the best meals so far. Service is good & we got a nice private tatami sitting. The meat is thick, juicy. Each bite is delicious. Will come back again

MARCH 2023 Was lucky to get a seat without waiting. Tonkatsu can only be ordered as a set which comes with rice, miso soup and some small appetizer snacks. Tried the pork tenderloin and the super deluxe pork loin cutlet. Very good overall, the super deluxe pork loin was different to what I'm used to with different layer of meat and fat.

Tonkatsu that just melts in your mouth. It's made from a special kind of pork, and there are different options to dip it in (vinegar, tonkatsu sauce, mustard, etc). I had to queue up but I was seated in no time. The staff was very kind and they spoke excellent English. They even took the time to explain the best way to eat the dish, and what all the different condiments were. All in all an amazing experience!

Some of the best tonkatsu I’ve ever had. The quality of the meat is amazing and it’s cooked perfectly, not too well done but slightly rare and juicy. The breaded panko also has a very nice texture. Arrive early as they sell out of the premium pork loin quickly!

I got curious about this restaurant since it’s ranked bib gourmand by the Michelin Guide. It is also located in Tokyo’s sumo town so there are places to visit after getting your fill of their crispy and juicy tonkatsu. For diners who cannot read Japanese characters well, you can ask the staff for their English menu. That menu is super helpful - it has succinct descriptions of food items plus some visuals. I would definitely come back for their tonkatsu that’s a cut above the rest.

If you want to get a authentic high-end Tonkatsu (pork cutlets), this is the place to go! I suggest you “jo-rosu” (fine quality loin) and eat with wasabi and salt. You can taste the sweetness of fat of the pork!!😋😋

Amazing food! Deluxe deep fried pork cutlet is a must try. It’s juicy and generous in portion. The staff was very friendly too. You have to queue outside but it’s worth the wait.

I really wanted to like this, based on the rave reviews. But clearly I’m not a connoisseur of katsu. I found the meat dry and the filling had a strange taste. Also because we waited outside for a long time and it was expensive. At least the rice was refillable.

The setup: came in on Saturday a few mins after opening, and was able to get the last free table without lining up. When we left the restaurant there was a line of about 25 outside, so it pays to be early. The food: the deluxe rosu was the best tasting tonkatsu I've had so far. Best with wasabi and their tonkatsu sauce.

Great! Live up to expectations. I really enjoyed everything we ordered. Side dishes were great too. We will definitely go back again. Went back for lunch. Everything we ordered, the sandwich, the deluxe cutlet, and the cutlet on rice were all excellent. I am glad we were back for the last lunch this trip in Tokyo.

Found this tonkatsu restaurant on the Michellin Guide as a Bib Gourmand recommendation. Boy was I pleasantly surprised by how delicious it was! Got there for lunch and ordered the delux pork tonkatsu at 220g (lunch time only) came with pickled veggies, preserved seaweed, miso soup, a healthy serving of cabbage along with the star of the meal - perfectly friend pork tonkatsu - can honestly say so far has been the best pork tonkatsu I have had, so far. Would highly recommend this to anyone! So delicious, did not think pork cutlet could be so amazingly delicious!

Famous pork cutlet which is worth money. I had deluxe pork loin and the savor was amazing. The staff was so nice and kind too.

Without a doubt, this is the best tonkatsu I've had. The deluxe set included a premium cut of breaded pork with a side of soup, cabbage, and various pickled vegetables. The pork was cooked perfectly, and melted in your mouth. The wait staff spoke very good English.

Before coming to Hasegawa all I knew about tonkatsu was the batter heavy and often dry pieces from my local Hawaiian places. After Hasegawa I now understand what tonkatsu should taste like, and it is something special. I never knew pork could be so soft, tender, and juicy; it had rewritten in my brain how delicious pork could be. I came on a Sunday evening around 8pm for a party of 3 without reservations. We stepped off from Ryogoku Station and was at the restaurant in a couple of minutes. We had to wait about 15 minutes to be seated. They gave us menus (English is available) to look at while we waited. There even was a little heater in the waiting area for those cold winter nights! There are multiple cuts available. The highest quality cuts sell out so if you want to try the best of the best, you should come early! The rice, soup, and lettuce can all be refilled for free. Overall Tonkatsu Hasegawa is an amazing shop, that I highly recommend to anyone.

Visited here after seeing it listed on bib gourmand. Waited about 20mins to be seated at lunchtime which was very fair. Ordered the premium option and was blown away by the taste. I'd never really enjoyed pork cutlet before but this was fantastic, so tender, juicy and flavoursome. Excellent value for money.

This is the best tonkatsu I have ever had, and it left me speechless...didn't say more than 10 words to our group at lunch and just kept eating!! Rice and Cabbage refills are free. Service was amazing, they made sure we were satisfied with everything during lunch. Unfortunately tipping culture is not a thing in Japan, otherwise I'd gladly tip them 30%!!

I truly don’t understand how this restaurant can be recommended by Michelin guide. The waitress forgot oshibori and didn’t check on us until we called 3 times. Our order of pork loin cutlet with garlic and pork loin cutlet with shiso and cheese was so oily and filled with fat…I had to spit out most of it after the first bite, couldn’t eat it. Complete waste of money and time.

Delicious! My favorite tonkatsu I’ve had in Tokyo. Ambiance is great and the staff are superb. Highly recommend.

Fantastic katsu, we had the Hasegawa katsu and the Loin Katsu, perfectly cooked and super tasty. We also ordered the fried squid, a salad and drinks bringing the total to around ¥3500 pp

  • 5/5 Andrew K. 1 year ago on Google
Been here many times over the years. What I notice though is not many other reviews mention the fried squid, its meant to be an appetizer but for me its the main reason I keep coming back. The squid is so soft you wouldn't realize its squid if you weren't told. Fried with panko similar to tonkatsu, tastes delicious with just a little salt, literally melts in your mouth.
