From our camp site at Altyn Arashan, it was a total of 5 hrs horse ride and 3 hrs of gruelling trekking. Left our camp after breakfast past 9am on horseback through pine forests, cliffs and rivers until we reached the base of Ala Kol North Pass where we had to leave our horses. Then we started our trek up to the summit of the North Pass at around 3900 meter in elevation. With not enough time to acclimatize, high altitude sickness really hit us during our ascent. We had to stop every after a few steps to regain our breathing as the air became thinner and thinner. Hubby always reminded us "just take one step after the other, don't look up". I almost gave up as I wasn't sure how I can make it up to the peak. I know I'm gonna regret it, so I continued with the climb. Finally, we all made it to the summit that revealed Ala Kol Lake in all its beauty. We sat there gazing at the stunning scene below us. How breathtaking the views were as far as our eyes could see. It was all completely worth it!

Fun hike up to the lake. It can be done between 1-3 days depending on how fast you want to go. Remember to be prepared for the mountain weather and download maps.me for the route (most of which is quite obvious)

Ala Kul lake is a lake situated in Karakol. We did 3 days trekking with "Travel Forever" company. The first day trail was not easy. in the morning the car left us to Karakol valley bridge. After we did trekking about 7 hours. In the evening we slept in Tent. The place name is Sirota. Second day after breakfast we went up to Ala Kul lake. located 3500m. The lake one of the most beautiful lake I have seen in my life. After following by the lake go up 3900m Ala Kul pass. After down to Altyn Arashan. Here we arrived in the evening for the dinner. After dinner we took shower. The 3rd last day is was very easy only going down to Karakol. Actually the tour was 3 days if you add mor one day will be more easier. But everything was high level. Our guide is experienced. He always helped me to carry my things. Thanks recommended company Travel Forever

Beautiful trekking towards Ala-Kul Lake and due to the exceptional early snow the landscape was all white in September. Awesome experience!

Amazing trek! First day is walking along the river and you can see horses wondering in the vally. Camp the first night after an hour ascent after crossing the river. The second day is harsh, some people choose to camp by ala-kul (please bring your garbage down...). Beware of the cold high up there. For a 3D2N suggested to be at the lake before noon, it is a long way continue to the village. You can rent equipment in Karakul. The rout is clear most of the time, gets a big confusing at the part of river crossing. But there will always be a men with horse offer you a ride for a fee.

Ala Kul is one of the most popular locations for all hikers, who visit Kyrgyzstan and the area around Karakol town. Located on the south from Karakol, at the mountains pass between Karakol Valley and Altyn Arashan valley, the lake is the great opportunity for hiking. Well known for its turquoise water and panorama of snowy mountains behind. Located at the altitude 3500m, it can be accessed from both valleys. Comfortable hiking trek Karakol - Ala Kul - Karakol takes approximately 3 days. According to my experience, it's better to start the trek at Karakol Valley, so that you can chill out in thermal waters and houses at Altyn Arashan. Best period to visit the lake is June - September.

Incredible alpine lake. Natures gift. The trek is physically demanding, however very rewarding. Bring plenty of water, snacks and warm clothing- mountain weather can change very quickly.
