In 1947, a Japanese Buddhist monk by the name of Nichidatsu Fujii dedicated his life to constructing Peace Pagodas around the world as symbols of peace. More than 80 Peace Pagodas have been built all over the world including in Europe, Asia and the United States. Today, it acts as a symbol of peace for the Buddhist-majority country of Sri Lanka, but its clean, rounded design is intended to represent harmony between people of any and all backgrounds. The immense white stupa that rises out of the Japanese Peace Pagoda is surrounded by statues painted in gold, while a nearby flight of stairs leads to a walkway that goes around the shrine, offering breath-taking views of the jungle, the sea, and the stunning Galle Fort. When stopping by the Peace Pagoda, visitors should ensure that they are dressed modestly and respectfully; legs and shoulders need to be covered.

Rumassala Mountain ⛰️ meaning Beautiful Rock. It's supposed to be the Himalayan part that Hanuman got to the South of Lanka, when Laxuman was injured. It seems a meteorite struck here, so can find many red and black rocks with shiny crystals embedded it, which can formed only with intense heat. The Peace Pagoda was built later. The view of Galle from here is breathtaking indeed. There is a Hanuman temple here too. The path from here leads you on to the Unawatuna Jungle Beach. There are some food stalls enroute. Fresh juices are good so are the fruits spicy fresh pickles. A worthy visit.

The Japanese peace pagoda. From this place you can see the Galle Fort. The view of the sea is nice. The vehicle park is near the spot. You can able to see a lady who sells flower there. If you like you can buy them and offer them for Lord Buddha. Try to avoid afternoon time visits. You can see some shops who are selling juice items around there.

I had a powerful experience participating in the evening prayer between 4.30-5.30pm. The vibration of the drums (of the monk's, my own and other visitors') echoing within the temple gave me frequent but fleeting goosebump reactions. Coupled with the rhythmic prayers, and the ring of the root chakra bowl at the end left a lasting impression on my body and spirit. The Japanese monk who led the prayer had a loving and peaceful aura. Stray dogs were drawn to him, cuddling up to him and licking him during the prayer, somehow the loud sounds and drum vibrations not bothering them. I loved that even amidst the prayers, he took the time to be kind to pet the dogs and to encourage a noisy playful child to meditate, and that he ended the prayers talking about the peace pagodas that exist globally and its difficult history during WW2. The pagoda with the backdrop of the sea was majestic during the day, breathtaking during sunset.

Situated atop a cliff, this serene and tranquil temple offers visitors a breathtaking panoramic view of its surroundings. The unique aspect of this temple is that it was donated by Japan, which is reflected in its name. The pagoda and the temple itself showcase a fusion of Japanese and Sri Lankan architectural styles, creating a distinctive and captivating ambiance. Upon entering the temple, you will encounter statues and drums reminiscent of Japanese Buddhist temples, setting it apart from other Buddhist temples in Sri Lanka. The presence of these elements provides a refreshing and different experience, offering a glimpse into the cultural exchange between the two countries. During prayer times, the monks engage in a soul-soothing practice of softly playing the drums, enhancing the tranquil atmosphere and immersing visitors in a calming and meditative environment. The temple's peaceful ambiance makes it an ideal spot for meditation, allowing individuals to find solace and inner peace. In addition to its spiritual attributes, this temple also takes care of practical needs. Clean washrooms are available for visitors' convenience, ensuring a comfortable and hygienic experience. Furthermore, the temple provides a large parking space, allowing visitors to park their vehicles without any hassle. However, it is important to heed the instructions and avoid parking in designated private areas to avoid any inconvenience. In summary, this calm and peaceful temple, perched on a cliff with a stunning panoramic view, offers a unique experience due to its Japanese influence. From the statues and drums to the soothing drumming during prayer time, the temple immerses visitors in a serene and meditative atmosphere. With clean facilities and ample parking space, it is an excellent destination for those seeking tranquility and a touch of cultural diversity.

Nestled gracefully upon the serene Rumassala hill, overlooking the vast expanse of the ocean, the Japanese Peace Pagoda in Galle stands as a timeless embodiment of tranquility and harmony. This architectural marvel not only captures the eye but also touches the soul with its profound symbolism of peace. As you ascend the hill and lay your eyes upon the pagoda, a sense of awe washes over you. The pagoda's allure lies not just in its physical beauty, but also in the ethereal calm it imparts to every visitor. The air seems to carry an aura of serenity, and the mind finds solace in the very atmosphere surrounding it. The intricacies of the shrines within the pagoda complex are captivating, each element telling a story of devotion and artistry. The pagoda itself is a testament to human ingenuity, an architectural wonder that stands as a testimony to the dedication of those who built it. The crowning glory of this experience, however, is the panoramic view it offers. From its elevated vantage point, the gaze stretches over the boundless sea and the charming city of Galle. It's a vista that both humbles and uplifts, reminding us of the vastness of the world and the unity we all share. The landscape around the pagoda complements its tranquility perfectly. The lush greenery of Rumassala hill extends its embrace, enveloping the pagoda in a natural beauty that adds to the charm of the overall setting. The absence of an entrance fee is a pleasant surprise, allowing everyone to partake in this oasis of peace. During my visit, I was fortunate to witness a prayer session accompanied by rhythmic drumming. The melodic beats resonated through the air, weaving a tapestry of soothing sounds that echoed the essence of the pagoda itself – a place of inner calm and reflection. In a world often bustling with chaos, the Peace Pagoda in Galle beckons as a sanctuary of stillness and serenity. Its profound beauty, panoramic views, and the tranquil atmosphere it provides make it a must-visit destination for those seeking a respite from the demands of modern life.

Sri Lanka has many beautiful sights, and this is one to add. Well worth the trip to see this impressive structure. There is a story of Buddhism there on plaques there which always adds value to sightseeing as I like many others, enjoy learning about the history. When the ladies are selling you flowers on the way in, buy some and lay them inside the temple. Remember to leave your shoes at the door!

Rumassala is a shrine that attracts Buddhists as well as tourists. Its legend dates back to Rama-Ravana and is a popular tourist attraction today. The garden is located on a scenic hilltop in front of Unawatuna beach, which is constantly crowded with tourists. It's pleasing to the eyes. Rumassala is a great treasure for us.

(Translated by Google) A beautiful, wonderful place that is saturated with joy and peace ... also the spiritual one. 😍 The view of the Ocean at sunset, unearthly ... and the sounds of the animals surrounding Buddhist temples. => The Peace Pagoda having height of 94ft is situated on the slopes of the Jalapahar hills, in the town of Darjeeling. => This is one of the best places to visit while you are on a trip of Darjeeling. => Its foundation stone was laid in 1972 whereas inaugurated after 20 years in 1992. => It depicts the life journey of Buddha alongwith his four avatars including Maitreya Buddha. => You will observe the blend of serenity & spirituality as soon as you enter into it. => If you are lucky enough and the weather is clear, you can witness the beauty of the Kanchenjungha.

A calm and peaceful temple. Located on a cliff so you have a panoramic view of the surrounding. The pagoda and the temple is a donation from Japan and hence the name. The temple contains statues and drums resembling the Japanese Buddhist temples. So it is a different experience when compared to the other Buddhist temples in Sri Lanka. The monks will also play the drum softly during the prayer time. The temple is also a good place for meditation. Meditation times are from 4.30pm-5.30pm as per the notice at the temple. Clean washrooms and large parking space available.

Go there in the early morning and hear nothing but the sound of waves breaking on the shore and occasional bird chirping. Or go there in the evening and enjoy the lovely view of sunsetting in to the sea. No matter what time you go the place will give you peace and calmness of a buddhist temple and the beauty of mother nature.

Like most pagodas in this beautiful country, it is a bit removed from sources of noise including traffic. It’s a great place to not only spend a few moments in silent reflection but also take in panoramic views of the coast. The priest at the beautifully adorned prayer room was very generous with information and advice, got us a ladder to gather gooseberries from the tree in the compound and even led us to the Hanuman temple next door.

This place is 2km walk from main road (Bonavista bus stop). and close to jungle beach and Unawatuna. This is on Rumassala hill top. Hence the view is stunning. You can see the Galle town, fort, lagoun and harbour from this. The view is nice. But when on sunny days this place is hot. There is a small temple which has some influance from Japaneess culture. Its better to wear apprpreatly of you are visiting the temple. If you are walking to this location , you will notice there are different varities of trees as there is a forest around this area. There are many hotels near by this location if you wish to stay and enjoy the view and the surrounding.

Really beautiful and peaceful pagoda with amazing views around. Pagodas are always very peaceful and peaceful there are very nice. But this this is the first time i had a bit of bad experience. Normally obviously i respect every culture and their customs. I have traveled to many pagodas and all of the people there are so nice and peaceful, but here one of the priests literally was mad at me and blamed me for wearing shorts. I understand if you want people to wear full cover clothes inside, then may be write a poster outside?(in English?) I didn’t know, and as sri Lanka is very hot country i was wearing shorts. I felt really sad, because it broke my idea about buddhist pagodas being peace loving.

The Rumassala Japanese Peace Pagoda is an enchanting testament to tranquility, nestled amidst the breathtaking beauty of Galle, Sri Lanka. As a devout traveler and seeker of inner peace, I recently had the privilege of visiting this exquisite pagoda and found myself utterly captivated by its serene ambiance and profound spiritual significance. Perched atop the picturesque Rumassala Hill, the pagoda serves as a symbol of harmony and goodwill between Japan and Sri Lanka, representing their shared commitment to peace and unity. The architectural splendor of the pagoda is a seamless blend of traditional Japanese design and Sri Lankan craftsmanship, resulting in a structure that is both elegant and culturally rich. Upon entering the pagoda, one is greeted by a palpable aura of serenity. The tranquil atmosphere is enhanced by the melodious chants and gentle fragrance of incense, invoking a sense of deep introspection and reflection. The interior houses a majestic Buddha statue, intricately carved and adorned, exuding a profound sense of tranquility and spiritual reverence. The pagoda's surroundings are equally captivating, offering panoramic vistas of the azure Indian Ocean and the lush greenery of Rumassala Hill. The well-maintained gardens are a perfect setting for meditation and contemplation, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in nature's embrace while finding solace in the pagoda's peaceful energy. While the pagoda itself is a testament to tranquility, the journey to reach it is an adventure in its own right. This small but fantastic Pagoda is situated slightly above the Jungle beach between Galle & Unawatuna. There is a motor road on one side, but we decided to hike through the forest from the Unawatuna beach. Hiking through the trees and across the small fall, the arrival gives a sense of satisfaction after taking in the beauty of the surrounding views.

The Japanese Peace Pagoda is quite impressive. You can see it from the main Unawatuna beach and, upon climbing the Rumassala hill it fills your vision. Sri Lanka has four peace pagodas and there are over 80 worldwide. Most are built by the Japanese Nipponzan-Myōhōji order, as was the one here. They are monuments designed to inspire peace among all races and creeds. This example in Unawatuna certainly does feel peaceful.
