The artifacts and the information are interesting but the staff make you feel very unwelcome. I love history and have been to many museums and have never gotten that feeling before. It's only €3 per ticket so very well priced. You can't bring a bag in with you they keep them behind the front desk which I do understand but it's in a press as opposed to you getting your own locked box. They just give you a coloured key fob with number and mark your bag with the same. There are lots of staff walking around watching people but no one really helps or give and extra information. At one stage I put my hand on a table to read the small print on the art work of the main room and got quickly told to take my hand off the table. Now this isn't a historical artifact it's a modern round table specifically made to provide information. Then when collecting my bag the person that got if for me had a face on them of complete disgust. Wouldn't be in a hurry to go back there or recommend the place. The first lady that sold us the tickets though was lovely but didn't tell us to keep our tickets on us, so since I had to give up my bag I put the tickets in the bag so not to be carrying them around. And then a guy standing in front of the first exhibition asks for your ticket. I told him it was in my bag and he basically treated us like idiots. We were the only ones there at the time and he watched us buy the tickets.

A gem of a small museum with wonderful artifacts, art objects and a magnificent old church. Cost is only 3 Euros seniors 1/2 price. Ignore all the 1 star reviews by folks bothered by the staff watching visitors closely, they need to. Twice visitors had to be told not to take flash photos and once a person was actually touching a painting. The website and info on Google maps should be clearer to show the museum closes to admission 1/2 hrs before 1 pm and 6 pm closures.

Beautiful museum, very lowkey and hidden within a buzzing city. The exhibits were very informative with english and Portuguese translations. The historians at the museum were very helpful and guided us through with instructions and descriptions.

Beautiful museum and very affordable but the staff absolutely ruined the experience. They watched you like a hawk and we’re waiting to jump down your throat as soon as you misstepped. Very unwelcoming, uninformative and condescending.

Beautifully kept and interestingly curated small museum with many aspects of Lagos history and many other interesting and curious items from afar. Good information plaques almost everywhere, and very helpful staff available to you. Also, very affordable!

Terrible experience even though the museum itself is good. For context I visited this museum in the middle of August with my pregnant wife during our visit to Lagos. We had paid for the tickets in advance and when we arrived at the museum we were greeted by a closed door and a long line of people, we soon realized that the door would open to let people leave and allow for others to enter, it should be noted that it was summer and it was hot with no shade. After 20-30 minutes in the heat they allowed us to enter and we were sent to the reception and they asked us to leave our bag in a shared cabinet. I asked for their complain book while my wife inquired why she wasn't allowed to get in with her water, reminding them about her condition. We weren't allowed to take the water and they registered out complain in the book without a care in the world. We went to visit the museum were we felt like we were being constantly watched by the staff. We took back our things and left. Interesting church with a rich history and really beautiful chapel but after the terrible conditions to enter the museum it ruined the whole experience.

A very peculiar little museum. It is brand new, having taken years to renovate, but although it now looks stylish, there is no order or flow to the exhibits. No mention of the town's history as a slave port, only praise for the "discoverers". One whole room is given to a miniature model of an imaginary town (yes, really). The earthquake section and some of the projections are clever, and the staff were very helpful, but overall it was more puzzling than informative. Many of the English translations have errors or are so badly translated as to be meaningless.

An absolute gem, ruined by the intrusive staff. We visited on a weekday and there were almost no other visitors, yet we were plagued by staff, some of whom followed us around as if we needed guidance. Or perhaps they thought we were terrorists? Certainly the latter could have been true as we were asked to deposit a small napsack at reception, presumably in case it contained an explosive device. Certainly with the staff's constant presence and chitter-chatter, they were at risk of an explosive outburst - from my mouth. Quite possibly 12 or 14 staff members milling around aimlessly, but merrily destroying any chance of our visit being described as peaceful or meditative. They close for lunch. Presumably they need a rest from being bothersome and irritating.

Beautiful and compact museum about the history of Lagos. Information about the collection on display is available in English as well. Handy for tourists. At the end of the route visitors get to see the Sao Antonio church, heavily gilded in massive gold and other crafts.

Uninteresting and random collection of artefacts. Lagos has more than 2000 years of history and this tiny museum contains mainly rooms full of dull religious iconography and facts from recent history with v little context. Weirdly curated (the route round makes no sense) and the staff loiter around you as if you’re going to steal something. Save your money and go somewhere else!

A nice little museum and very cheap at only 3 euros. I would have liked to have learned more about the town from it and known more about the items in the 'cabinet of curiosities'. We didn't find the same issue with staff that others have mentioned. The small church at the end was stunning.

I stumbled across this museum and went in on a limb. I was really impressed with the exhibition, which spans archeology, paintings of Lagos and Algarve, and a gaudy sacristy.

Small but very interesting museum. The attached Chapel is the most beautiful I have ever seen and should not be missed on a visit to Lagos. Only 3 euros entry which is excellent value. Highly recommend.

An odd and eclectic collection of artefacts attached to the historic box church.

Beautiful museum, great descriptions in ENG & Portuguese. A mix of historical objects with informative digitalisation. A few surprises, too! Worth a visit.

Worth it - especially the cabinet of curiosities and church. Great WC.

Everything looked beautiful but my favourite was without question the Cabinet of Curiosities! The museum has an app you can download to act as a tour guide, you can learn really interesting facts about some of the pieces in display, wish it had more information but overall a great addition to the visit.

A cute small museum, with access to the beautiful church. The 3 euro admission is worth it. It probably takes 45 minutes to visit the the local history exhibits and church.
