Motijhil (also Motijheel, literal translation: Pearl Lake), also known as Company's Lake due to its association with the East India Company, is a horse-shoe shaped lake in Murshidabad, West Bengal, India. It was created by Nawazish Muhammad Khan, the son-in-law of Nawab Alivardi Khan. He also constructed a precious palatial palace beside this lake which is called the Sang-i-Dalan (literal translation: Stone Palace) which is also known as the Motijhil Palace. It is located at the bend of this lake. It was used as the residence of Nawazish and Ghaseti Begum, Nawazish's beloved wife. It is said that after Nawazish died, Ghaseti Begum lived here until Nawab Siraj ud-Daulah took over the palace and seized the residents' in 1756 AD. With this money he built a similar lake with a beautiful palace, Hirajheel, on the opposite side of the Hooghly River. The palace has a lofty gateway, a mosque known as the "Shahamat Jang" and the Kala Masjid and some other buildings which were all built by Nawazish. This palace was built in 1740. As far as etymology is concerned, the palace has been named so as it was built using black basalt pillars which were brought from the ruins of Gaur. Thus, it was given the name of Sang-i-Dalan or the Stone Palace. This palace was then decorated with different varieties of flower plants and precious marbles. According to James Rennell Motijhil is a horse shoe shaped lake. Motijhil is situated about one and a half kilometers away from Murshidabad in the south and about three kilometres away from the Hazarduari Palace in the south east. It has been excavated on the former beds of the Bhagirathi River that once flowed near this lake. The river was much nearer in 1766 that now. At south there is a tank known as the Shanti Pukur. The offices were built on its banks. Motijhil was also the residence of Warren Hastings from 1771 to 1773, when he became the political President at the court of the Nawab. It had also paid host to Robert Clive and John Shore, 1st Baron Teignmouth.

Motijheel, the cradle of British rule in India, stands witness to a remarkable turning point in Indian history. A 350 acre oxbow lake formed out of an abandoned bed of river Bhagirathi, the Motijheel, derived its name from extensive pearl cultivation during the Nawabi period. Motijheel Park is open: Mon - Mon 12:00 AM - 11:59 PM.Entrance fee is only 20 Rs per person and light-sound show of evening is also included. There are statues Nawab Siraj, Nawab Murshid Quli Khan, There are thousands to trees, flowers blooming, a huge crescent shaped lake. The Meaning of Motijheel Moti means pearl and jheel means lake, thus giving its name Pearl Lake. The history of Motijheel dates back beyond the days of the Battle of Plassey. It served as a pleasure garden of Nawazish Muhammad Khan, son-in-law of Alivardi Khan. It consisted of a towering gateway, a three-domed mosque and a royal place named Sang-i-dalan.

I went to this place with my family. A group of 15 people. I had my best time here. We stayed in the beautiful cottages . The rooms were clean but some of the rooms were damped and speed of water in the bathroom was not great. The staff are very helpful. The food service was a little bit slow maybe because we were a group of 15 people. I would suggest you try the Thalis options they were very yummy. The property is very very beautiful, serene, scenic, clean and full of nature. If you visit this property I will request to keep it clean and don’t through waste everywhere. Happy Journey ❤️

Motijheel, nestled in the cultural tapestry of Murshidabad, West Bengal, is a picturesque lake that captivates visitors with its serene beauty and historical significance. My visit to this tranquil oasis left me enchanted, providing a welcome respite amidst the rich historical landmarks that surround it. The pristine expanse of Motijheel is adorned with lotus flowers, creating a serene and calming atmosphere. As I strolled along the well-maintained pathways encircling the lake, the gentle rustling of leaves and the occasional chirping of birds formed a soothing symphony. The greenery that envelops the lake contributes to a sense of tranquility, making it an ideal spot for leisurely walks and quiet contemplation. Motijheel's charm is heightened by the presence of ancient structures along its banks, including the Katra Mosque and the Nawab Bari, lending a historical backdrop to the natural beauty. The strategically placed seating areas offer visitors the perfect vantage points to appreciate both the architectural marvels and the scenic landscape. Boat rides on the lake provide an enchanting perspective, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the idyllic surroundings. However, to further enhance the experience, the provision of more recreational activities or informational boards detailing the history of Motijheel and its surrounding landmarks would be valuable. The well-preserved ecosystem around Motijheel reflects the commitment to maintaining its natural beauty. Clean and well-manicured gardens contribute to the overall aesthetic appeal, making it an inviting destination for families, nature enthusiasts, and those seeking a peaceful retreat. In conclusion, Motijheel is a hidden gem in West Bengal, offering a harmonious blend of nature and history. Its serene waters and verdant surroundings provide a welcome escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life. Whether one seeks historical exploration or simply a quiet moment of reflection, Motijheel stands as a testament to the timeless beauty that graces the landscapes of Murshidabad.

Good place for children. There are many functional rides and slides for kids. The museum at the entrance lacks proper lighting. There is a large ground full of mango trees. This place is rented out for picnic parties. This place is connected with good roads and a restaurant inside the park. The toy train ride could be better.

Unlike the other attractions of Murshidabad, the Moti jhil is more of a picnic spot than a historic place. Its a very large area and you can easily spend a whole day here. Mostly locals and regional tourists flock here and there is a nice food court serving all types of dishes. If you are a tourist, you may spend a couple of hours here, but nothing more.

Landmark and historical place. Mothijhil is also proud of murshidabad, the place of nawabs. The beauty of this park is awsome. I went there for many times. If you come into murshidabad, you should to come this place. Now this park is under taken in west bengal gov. Lot of histories of nawabs are hidden in this place. So if you like to visit historical place, this is the best one. If you come here you will definitely enjoy this place. You can come here with your friends or families. Winter season is the best to visit this place. Foreigners are also come here in this winter season. And after visit the whole park, the always leaves us a positive compliments.

Great experience, but not the best experience. It is a very peaceful place actually but you cannot do anything else with the jheel except watching it and walking across of it.And if you look at the park,it is decorated beautifully.Anyways it's a very good place to visit but if you live too far away from that place then it is better for you not to visit there.
