You'd be doing yourself a great disservice if you don't order the onion rings! THE BEST! I had a cup of the broccoli cheddar soup and swooned! A yakamaniac beer topped off a divine meal! Service was attentive and quick! Definitely should be on everyone's bucket list! UPDATE! came with brother and sis in law for supper! Christian was server extraordinaire! Once again onion rings! OMGOSH ONION RINGS! Turkey club phenomenal and bro loved his bison burger! I switched beer from a yakamaniac to a stormchaser. PERFECT! Went with parents for some lunch. I had (of course) onion rings only this time I requested horseradish sauce (like I had at Ted's in bozeman). I urge you to so the same! It was heavenly! Crunchy rings with a bite of heat. I think I may have blacked out with happiness. Dad had the goulash and he pronounced it "very, very good!" I tried it and seconded that! This restaurant never fails to be consistent in Flavor, presentation, great service and overall quality!

25 years and only have great memories of Freestate. Today, my family all tried something different than we’d normally order and couldn’t be happier! Just excellent. The farm sausage tortellini, bangers and mash, Nashville Mac-n-cheese, and fish and chips added to the memories. Thanks FS!

I ordered Philipino egg rolls, Pretzel with Mustard, and a burger with fries. Let me start by saying the service was excellent. I really enjoyed the egg rolls, they had great flavor. I also enjoyed the Pretzel with Mustard, great flavor also. The burger was ok, just not much seasoning or flavor. The fries were decent. On a scale from 0-10 I would rate this 7.9.

I had the most infuriating experience eating here. I asked the waitress for a gluten-free menu, and I saw that there was an option for a rice bowl. I had assumed because it was listed under the quesadilla and said you could substitute the flour shell for rice. Which meant I could eat something there? The waitress returned, and I pointed to the rice bowl and told her I'd like to substitute the flour shell and get the Spanish rice bowl, please. She looks at me perplexed and says, "Oh, you want the black bean quesadilla." I pointed at the rice bowl option again and said I wanted whatever came in the quesadilla, but just in a rice bowl, as it mentions. She looks at me again and says, "We don't do that here but I can do rice on the side!" I point at it again and show where it is written, and she looks it up and down for a second and says, "I'm not sure where you're seeing that, but you want the quesadilla, right?" LADY!!! For the love of literacy, it's right here! Please tell me I'm not going crazy. Eventually, I acquiesced and got the black bean quesadilla I couldn't eat. Then...they serve me this.

What can I say that hasn’t been said before about this Kansas institution? Try to get a seat at the bar, go ahead try! Food is always excellent and the beer they brew here will win you over!

Free state is a must in Lawrence, service is good but be ready for a wait to get a table on busy days. Food is a good variety of pub and homemade dishes

Very good place in downtown. It provides food with reasonable price. I got the Black and Blue Burger. The waitress was super funny and friendly.

This is the best brewery and best restaurant in Lawrence. I have been going here for 13 years. Traveled from NY to go here. Worth it.

It's really gone downhill. It got pretty bad after covid and just never recovered. They used to have food that would compete with any fine dining in the entire culinary world. Prior to 2020, everything was unique, fresh, and expertly crafted. Now, pretty much everything is breaded, fried, mass produced, glorified tavern food. It's not horrible, but nothing special you can't get anywhere else. It is also pretty hard to find something healthy on the menu. Prices also used to be cheap, now they are pretty high. I can't really fault them too much for this as much of it is out of their control. The service has always been decent. Never had a problem with it, but also never been impressed. I used to dine here every week. My wife and I came every Thursday, so I have lots of experience with this place. This was my favorite restaurant. I have never asked, but I expect they lost a chef or owner. This place is not the same as it was pre-2020. It's a totally different (and entirely generic) restaurant now. After giving them as many chances as I could, I just can't do it anymore. I'm unfortunately done with this place.

Great place! The beer was delicious (I had the oatmeal stout) and the food was great! Good kids menu and family friendly. Our server was fantastic! Highly recommended.

We have ordered to go food from here and it’s always fine. However, the service here is consistently awful for dine in. Most recently, after we were sat down with menus, we had to go up to the host stand to request a server TWICE and were still ignored! We waited way too long. Ultimately, we had to go back up to the host stand and just placed an order to go. I work in service, so I have a lot of patience for restaurants and service workers, but the dine in experience here is inexcusably horrible. The staff were unapologetic and didn’t seem to care about making it right. Won’t be back.

There simply isn't a Brewery that says "downtown Lawrence" quite as well as Free State. The comfort level is like a home-away-from-home. Delicious dinner and tantalizing opportunities to taste new brews. Service was stellar & dinner was a success!

The highlight of our experience last night (a Thursday) was our waiter, who was excellent! He paid just the right amount of attention, he offered separate plates for our split dishes, and he was perfectly responsive to each of our needs. I particularly appreciated the fact he kept our waters topped off on a day when the temperature had reached 104F and was over 100F for many hours. We stayed a long time, and no one rushed us even though we realized as we were leaving that it was 15 minutes past closing time. The food was generally good with some caveats. We had excellent onion rings that were very large, both individually and the overall portion size. Two of us shared the fish and chips: the fish was fresh and crispy on the outside but a bit wet and slimy on the inside as if the batter was too thick to fully cook all the way through, and it was too salty; the fries/chips were not fresh, and the special seasoning wasn't working for either of us sharing that dish. We heard only positives from the others in our group, who had the shrimp linguine, the sirloin with hash, and the Bavarian burger.

I’m visiting from out of town. I’ve been here before but it’s been a long time. I wasn’t too impressed the first time. But the party I was with wanted to go here so I decided to give it another try. First my sister and I sat at the bar and had a glass of wine while we waited for the rest of our party. The drinks were very reasonably priced (to me) at only $7 a glass. It was happy hour, but our drinks didn’t apply. That’s ok. I thought it was a good deal. We were a party of 7. After being sat we waited for a pretty long time to be taken care of. They were pretty busy. We ordered the fried pickles and the Spanish baked goat cheese with baguette. They were both good. For dinner I ordered the Brewhouse chicken salad. The rest of my party ordered a cup of the cheddar ale soup, the fish and chips, the farm sausage tortellini, the Bavarian burger, the special of lamb stew, and a chicken sandwich. I was a little disappointed with my salad. There was only about half of a grilled chicken breast. I tried one of the fries. They have a neat seasoning on them that makes them a little sweet. As we split up the bill the waiter was able to split the appetizers into thirds as well. We thought that was pretty cool! My bill for 2 people was only $56. Not bad for a glass of wine, a soda, two appetizers, a salad, and a sandwich.

Fantastic local Lawrence eatery; really enjoyed the hospitality of the staff, the quick-thinking beverage recommendations, quality and timeliness of the food! HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

We tried the fish and chips, the homemade pork sausage tortellini, and the shrimp pesto pasta. All three of the dishes were tasty, prepared well, and prepared fresh. The winner was the tortellini, which was an excellent mix of flavours. The waiter was efficient and attentive, although I really would have liked for him to wear a mask. And, finally, of course, the beer is off the charts are excellent at this place… They compete nationally amongst the better microbreweries.

Only brewery we had time to visit while passing through and sure happy we did. Fun beer selection to chose from. The amber was good but glad to got to try the Octoberfest!!! So good we got a six pack of Octoberfest to take home.

If you like beer this is likely the place to go in Lawrence. Great prices and quick service. The good: prices. Quick service. Above average selection as long as you like Free State Brewing. The meh: wish they had a larger selection of beer in general. The bad: this place gets crazy later on in the day, so come early.

This place is super nice and unique!! Not like normal restaurants I’ve been to. Has amazing food and friendly servers! I had the sausage tortellini and would give it five stars! Very good.

One of the best breweries in the area and a great restaurant to boot. I've been there multiple times and it never disappoints whether it's the food, the fresh beer or the service. BEER: They have something for every taste it's always top-notch. AMBIENCE: Relaxed and casual feel. A small bar area (my only criticism and sometimes keeps me from considering it) so if you enjoy the bar and you're there during the busy time it's unlikely you'll find a seat. The restaurant feels small but there's quite a bit of seating both lower and upper levels and in the back. In the front there's a very nice patio which is great to enjoy on a nice day. During the pandemic they were a little rigid but things have relaxed some and it's a much more enjoyable experience. FOOD: Lots of hearty dishes. Rarely disappointed with the quality and taste. SERVICE: Always friendly and attentive. Be aware if you're there during a shift change is the only time I've noticed the service level drop a little. That's a management issue not the servers. VALUE: For us it's a good value. We have a 40 minute drive to get there and we feel it's worth it. Entrees mostly in the $11-$16 range add a few beers, tip and tax and your good to go. Portions are a good size and we often take leftovers home.

First time in and it was busy and the atmosphere was very warm and cozy. I shared the giant pretzel and cheese board! Then enjoyed this margarita!
