I am an EU citizen and a resident of Germany with all valid documentation which I presented to the staff member. Oh, I have successfully rented from Europcar once before as well, mind you. So, the summarised version of my customer experience at the office is as follows: ‘I cannot give a car to you today’ ‘What, why?’ ‘I cannot tell you the reason. Good day’ We managed to persuade him to give us a scribbled email address for complaints and the generic customer service phone number. And so we called. The first lady was very nice indeed although could not help much. After 2 transfers, the Reservations lady told us that she does not know the reason for this, however asked me whether my driver’s license is in English. Aha! It isn’t, so that’s why you cannot rent with us! Wait what? It’s a standard EU licence madam, it does not have to be in English (the german one is only in german by the way, FYI). I was told that I have to change my driver’s licence to a german one if I live here (completely incorrect until the expiry date of my license) and that I should consider getting an International Driver’s Licence (I’m not even going there…). In her defence, she did try to be helpful, but in the end we found an alternative with one of the big competitors and bid farewell to the incompetence and ignorance of Buchbinder/ Europcar.

Aber der Mietarbeiter stellte sich dumm und meinte: Nein das Auto wurde voll abgegeben und man muss mir das jetzt in Rechnung stellen. Und das sein Kollege nichts notiert hätte. Da ich aber von allen Fotos gemacht habe war er ganz schnell kleinlaut und tat es ab, es sei alles in Ordnung und ich bräuchte nichts zu bezahlen. Hätte ich keine Fotos gemacht, hätten mir diese Betrüger alles in Rechnung gestellt. Interessant ist nur als ich vollgetankt habe, hat komischerweise die Tankanzeige funktioniert und alles war in Ordnung.

I booked a rental car for a period of 9 days including paying the cross border fee to drive to Italy via Switzerland. However, there was a vignette on the car only for the period 2022 and we returned in the New Year. EuRopcar's customer service should be better trained, I was assured on the phone that the purchase of the vignette would be reimbursed and that all you had to do was show the receipt. No sooner said than done, when we returned it on site, the nice gentleman at reception in the back of an office probably asked his superior whether this was handled that way (a little tip to the lady who answered, you can hear her when you're standing at the front) and we just heard "They should be happy that there was a vignette on it at all, they have to pay for it themselves."     I rented a van and am extremely dissatisfied with the entire processing and billing process at Europcar Dusseldorf Nord. The invoice was a rude awakening: it could only be issued correctly the third time. First three days were calculated, then corrected to two and then finally to the actual one day. And that after a total of four phone calls and many discussions. In addition, I filled up the van at the recommended Shell gas station before returning it until the nozzle closed. On the bill I was then charged 15 liters plus a service fee for filling up the tank -> 4.90 euros per liter. The reason: According to Europcar, the van has to be filled up to overflowing, even if the fuel filler neck is constantly closed. But I wasn't told that beforehand. According to Europcar, it was my fault for telling the customer beforehand without apology or insight. Even consulting with the boss was pointless. The business concept is not aimed at customer friendliness. My previous tenant probably had the same problem. When we picked it up, the van was not completely full of fuel and needed to be refueled a bit.
