One of the best places on earth for advanced open freshwater swimming in an urban setting. The lifeguarded swimming area runs for 600m with a ladder every 50m. The swimming area boundary to the North is marked with a gold painted ladder, located 100m south of Chess Pavilion/North Ave Pier. The Southern boundary is 100m North of Oak Street Beach. Must stay within 60 feet of the shore. Water temps are currently warmer than the historical average for early June - well into the 60s - enjoyable without a wetsuit. ~18 feet deep, fun for freediving. Get out there!

Dispatch of lakefront beaches covered with concrete. Lots of joggers, bikers, dog walkers, or just plain old tourists strolling along the lake. It offers good view of the Chicago skyline.

Yup it is a concrete beach with a great views of the lake and downtown Chicago. Lets just not make this a thing at other beaches. Save the sand!

I was absolutely amazed by my Chicago experience. There is a lot of bad press out there but I wouldn't let that fool you as our vacation was a great time! The views from the concrete beach and river walk are absolutely amazing.

All in all, the "beach" wasn't all that bad. As a place closer to the water as a place to hang out with a small group of people as it's easy to set up a spot and not get dirty while still enjoying the water.

Photo tip: Many photo op locations here, great view of the city from this location. Nice for biking, walking and chilling. Just no swimming as there's no life guards in this area.

Bring some fruit or food skit on a bench and watch the Lake or do some people watching.

The concrete can be redone. It needs work.

Chicago's concrete beach, called oak street beach by the locals, is one of the best spots in the city to both see the skyline and relax on the beach. The worst part about this attraction is that there is no sand only concrete making my beach experience much less comfortable. Luckily there are beach chairs for rental that provide all of my lumbar needs. I gave this beach 5 stars for more sinister reasons. Those being to raise the review of this beach to make better beaches like north avenue beach and Montrose beach less crowded. 😈😈😎😜😱

Great place for a walk in the summer evenings. Wide open spaces. Bike and pedestrian lanes. Watch out for the drug users in the tunnels.

  • 5/5 John S. 1 year ago on Google
Come by to watch the sunrise.

Packed during the summer. Very pretty to walk. Really hate all the fast bikers, city should impose a speed limit or create a fast lane.

It is good to soak your feet in the river and take a break for a while.

  • 5/5 Bret S. 4 years ago on Google
Only 35 reviews! Probably a little overlooked as it's between a couple of "real" beaches. The concrete beach is great! Easy access to the marvelous Michigan Lake and sunshine. There's a tunnel under Lake Shore right at Division, probably others as well. The biking/walking trail is heavily used, and on a Saturday early afternoon tons of people were lining the beach with their towels and coolers. Cool, pet-friendly place to walk and take in the lakeside breeze. BYOB.

(Translated by Google) I never thought I'd find a beach in Chicago. Thinking of Chicago, I never imagined I'd see such a show. Behind the skyscrapers of the highest in America and the frenzy of a metropolis, you can relax sitting on the beach by the sea ... (lake). Lake that by extension is slightly smaller than our Adriatic sea. Nice walk, place to do sports and relax.

The hardest part about this area in the past year the water levels of Lake Michigan have been so high that it limits the amount of area people can lounge on. Other than that a great view of the city and a nice place to spend a weekend day in the summer!

  • 5/5 Rachel S. 4 years ago on Google
Great place to run! It’s especially gorgeous in the winter when it looks like Gru took his freeze ray to the lake. Watch out, however, that you don’t slip on the ice and fall into the lake... the frozen layer might not be as thick as you could hope it to be 😬😱🥶in other news, it’s also fabulous for polar plunges!
