I found it from the top and did it on foot downwards. I don't know if it is worth to go in for such a small ride. If you go from the bottom to the top it must probably be better to take it. Good thing about walking is you can stop for taking pictures of the old tram and the nearby streets.

Considered Lisbon's most picturesque funicular, leading up to the Bairro Alto and Bica neighbourhoods. Classical Lisbon tourist attraction. The Bica Funicular, sometimes known as the Elevador da Bica, is a funicular railway line in the civil parish of Misericórdia, in the municipality of Lisbon, Portugal. It connects the Rua de São Paulo with Calçada do Combro/Rua do Loreto, operated by Carris. Built in 1892, the funicular was initially moved by the water counterbalancing system, whereby movement was achieved by loading the car at the top of the hill with water until it was heavy enough to descend the hill and pull up the other car at the bottom of the hill. Then, in 1896 the Ascensor da Bica became steam powered, and in 1924 it was electrified. Timetable: every 15 minutes (approx.) 7am – 9pm Monday to Saturday, 9am – 9pm Sunday and public holidays Tickets to ride the Bica funicular can be bought onboard, from the driver. They’re €3.80, and allow two trips -- up the hill and back down, or down and then back up, on the same day. Those who purchased the 24-hour public transportation card can ride it for free. That’s the “Viva Viagem” card that’s purchased at the metro stations for €6.45.

Found this place when searching for “Lisbon trams” on Instagram. Everyone’s visiting this one for the same reason, and it doesn’t disappoint!

An excellent location and service. Can't go wrong. Close to many diverse attractions restaurants etc etc.. clean, A little noisy as you are close to many late night spots plus your next to the uphill tram car which is very popular with the tourist and clearly can be heard in your rooms as they depart from the lower level which is right next to, (attached) to your building. Not completely unbearable, but u should be aware. The housekeeping service is exceptional. Very friendly and thorough.. all in all. I was satisfied. Fridge, microwave, sink, toaster, kettle, soft towels, nice comfortable bed, TV,... all very nice amenities. 👍👍

A short brilliant experience. The journey takes roughly 2 minutes, but they are amazing. If you don't have a travel ticket (€6.4/day), which is well worth it, it's €3.8 for a return trip

We paid 100% amount for a 4-night stay in advance here and checked in online, but due to a flight cancellation, we couldn't make it on the first day. When we arrived, the reservation was active. This company canceled our reservation without informing us about it and re-rented the apartment to someone else in fact leaving pregnant me and my husband on the street. They also refused to give us a refund. Be careful dealing with this company as their actions raise serious ethical concerns.

Even though the tram was closed when I visited, it was still a nice area to take pictures and walk down the route.

Lisbon’s historic/ old city. Steep slopes to walk but worth it. The historic/medieval times can still be felt in some streets. Must visit if you ever come to Lisbon.

Bica elevator. A must attraction in Lisbon. The tram is small but few people so you can get a good seat without long queues. It goes along a nice street. It worths !

€3,80 for both ways. Don’t buy it!!! Not worth it at all. If you need to make few pictures for instagram or so. Just walk the stairs up that’s all. Rip off for tourists ✌️👍

Location is prefect and this is almost the only advetange although it is quite noisy even at night. Staff are not there to help if needed and when you reach them they are not willing to help. More over one guest opened my room by mistake due to lack of help from the hotel to manage his check in although he tried to call them but no answer then I had to go with him downstairs to do his check in . When I called the staff to report the issue he replied me that take this new access code!!! Without checking what have happened or even to send some one to explain me how did that happen. I do agree with other comment that their police is way more than important the customer satisfaction I asked them one week earlier just to change the dates for my booking and the new dates were definitely available through booking site and offered even to do pay for the change but they rejected.morever the path room is the strangest design I have ever seen with toilet is separated from the show

To me, this was the most interesting and instagrammable "elevador" in Lisbon. Watch not to miss its starting point like I did before since it's located indoor.

Let’s all agree that taking a picture of it is really cool!! However, riding it might not be the same. First of all, it’s not really traveling a long distance. We walked down from the top and took another route to come up. Yes it was steep but still we were totally fine. Second, the tickets were expensive. 3.5 euros one way is just too much for such small ride also compare to the rest of everything else in Lisbon. Definitely a must see but not a must ride!

Cute and historic funicular which is a short ride up and down hill. The neighborhood is a little run down with graffiti but it's still fun. At the top you get the view down. As you get out of the tram at the top turn left, walk a couple of minutes and you will find a nice little bakery/coffee shop.

I really wanted to ride the Funicular but after reading the reviews here saying it is not worth the price, I took the Tram 28 instead which is longer and cheaper. Regardless, it was great to walk up and down the route.

Short ride but worth trying. Luckily wasn't too crowded. Try to secure a good spot during boarding next to the window or behind the driver :)

The location can't be beat. Close to several great bars, cafes, and restaurants, the Time Out market area, Pink Street, the seafront, and one of the railway stations for those going to Cascais. The Rossi station for those going to Sintra is also not far, and many of the tourist areas are a very walkable distance away. However, I must say that the check-in process was poorly explained, and we had several major problems with the helpfulness and courteousness of the staff found at the number (send to be a central service calling number for all of the Lisbon apartments). We ordered a shuttle from the airport, received a confirmation email with one price, received a 2nd email explaining we could order a shuttle as an extra service (they must not have seen that I already ordered), and they showed another higher price. When we arrived, there was no shuttle for us, no driver. When e called, they said they had no confirmation but I forwarded them the email with the confirmation number. Never heard back from them. In the end, we used Uber, which was half the price and comfortable. The Uber was about 16 Euros, the first shuttle price was 35 Euros, the 2nd shuttle price was for 55 Euros. Plan accordingly.

Free to get on the lift if your have the daily travel ticket. Nice view of the Lisbon city. Also we found out there was a traditional fish food on the top which was surprised us. Because we planned to go to find this shop after get down. The food was very delicious, my son is very fussy eater, but he ate almost 2 of them. Highly recommend.

We absolutely loved our stay. We stayed at four different places during our days in Lisbon, including a 4 star hotel, but not one was better (highlights for the price) than this one. Very clean, spaceous, friendly and helpful staff. Would definetly book again. Thumbs up, guys.

Long queue in the direct sunlight, no shade. Once you're on it, every seat taken, you can't see much! For the photo if you're physically fit, look to the left, run up the stairs & a bit further up the "challenging" hill to the tram passing place which is in the sun for the best photos. One of the two trams is spoilt by graffiti.

It was a fun little ride with Bica funicular. The vehicles are the smalles of the lisbon funiculars so you might end up waiting for the next one.

One of the most popular funicular trams in Lisbon, always full of tourists and passersby. The irony is that the ride is really short, thus, one can walk by and enjoy it without wasting time or money. I recommend also visiting "Elevador do Lavra" or "Elevador da Glória", which have longer rides.

It was like time travel. We had to wait a bit, which gave us time to study and admire the "terminal". The ride was of course short, but boarding the Elevador car felt like genuinely stepping into another time. There was a little bit of wood or metal squeaking, then we slowly started moving upwards. We will be taking another couple of rides tomorrow!

Wouldn’t pay to go up for just a short 2 min ride. Would rather walk up. Good for photos of the steepest street. We did ride up as one day as we had purchased the 24hr metro ticket and it was included.

Touristic attraction in the center of Lisbon. Please bring with you coins, they don't accept cards and very often they don't have changes. There is an ATM very close by if you don't have any spares. Don't expect too much from it, probably nicer if you just go in the street and see it passing.

Its a famous attraction that you shall not skip in Lisbon; yet, it shuts down early in the evening, check before you go so you can get on it. Still nice view to the street and the water behind it at the end of the road. Also well known for a nice romantic scene from La Casa De Babel TV series.

This apartment has a very inflexible check in policy. Their system is way more important than guest comfort and convenience. I extended my stay twice, staying for a total of 14 days. I accidentally booked the same day twice, so I asked for a refund. NOPE. I asked to stay in the same apartment so I won’t have to move for the last 3 days NOPE. I asked to have the same access code, NOPE. So I was locked out in the middle of the night and had to deal with the intercom for 15 mins to “reregister” when they already have all my information since I’d been there for a week. Definitely not customer focused. I will NOT recommend this apartment. There are equivalent priced and better customer focused places in Lisbon.

Lovely little ride, just the crowds of people are a bit annoying. I mean those who take photos from up the hill as you're in the tram itself. In any case I think it's worth experiencing this technically public transport, but in reality tourist attraction.

Super cute. Small. Fits 15-20 ppl. €3.80 cash or a metro pass. You might wait a bit, but many people will enjoy skipping the hike this would otherwise be.

Clean room, friendly staff. Lidl grocery store across the street if you need it. No safe in the room, there are extra outlets behind the nightstand on both sides of the bed. No shuttle to the airport but Bolt to the airport is under 5€. (Note: I didn't get a Bolt acceptance for a ride to the airport but instantly got a ride to the Meliá hotel a 3 minute walk to the terminal)

This is definitely a tourist trap. Highly recommended to not do it! It was November when we visited this place (surely not high season) and we were waiting for 50 minutes to hop on this old elevator and the route was just 1 minute!

We didn’t ride the tram, just watched it go up but it looked fun. It takes you to the top and can fit around 10 people in. There is a queue but it goes down fairly quickly!

19th century trams going up & down on a steep street; is closed as of May 2022, but is well worth to walk the historic streets of Lisbon

Cute little ride . Wouldn't recommend waiting for it as from bottom to top take 5 minutes (or less) tops? Instead try to walk up and you will be able to get a much nice shot of the funicular.

  • 5/5 Rachel S. 7 months ago on Google
Didn't ride the Elevator de Bica but we came by at night time for a photo. Really picturesque street and the yellow of the tram really pops. It's hard to get a bad photo. Right before sunset it wasn't too busy at people were probably off getting sunset photos - so we were able to get photos with relatively few people in the background. I saw on tourist blogs that the trams were covered in graffiti but the one we saw was clean. Maybe they've cleaned that up. It wasn't clear to us where to get on to ride the tram but it still seemed to be running at night, or maybe it was just open for people to enter and take photos as the tram did have people on it.

Not sure it's worth the €3.80 for this 1 minute ride but if you have a day pass or the Lisbon card and are in the area, why not? We passed by it a few times and saw really long lines, which is really not worth waiting for. By chance, we walked by it after dinner one night and there was no one waiting. Our Lisbon card was also still valid for a few more hours so we took the trip. The path doesn't have the most amazing views but it was fun to feel the vibes of old Lisbon even if it was just for a minute.

  • 5/5 George M. 1 year ago on Google
The ticket costs 3.80 euros which is expensive for the 3 minutes duration of the trip, but the experience is unique and worth it! It usually has a long queue. Tickets are issued at the end of the route.

  • 5/5 Aaron W. 6 months ago on Google • 7 reviews
Bit of a wait for a 2.5 minute ride but it was great fun. They accept cash if you don't have a travel card. There are some cool little bars and restaurants on the hill near the top of the journey, so we ended up making it part of our night out.

  • 5/5 Lucas L. 1 year ago on Google

  • 3/5 Andy A. 5 months ago on Google
Long queue to get up. Not so much to go down. Very short walk in anycase. It's quaint as are the side streets. Not sure it's really wortj the 3.80 euros for a 2 minute or so trip

Squeezed into the drivers cabin and up we went. Nothing to write home about, I found the Gloria funicular more interesting! If you have nothing to do , it’s part of the Lisbon experience I guess! Mechanical failure meant we were stuck in this tiny space for about 8 minutes. It’s €3.80 each way, but free for Me as I had the Lisbon card.

  • 4/5 Altug D. 1 year ago on Google
Great view but waiting can take up to 10-15 minutes, ride is about 2 minutes. Better climb the way next to the rails and take photos from outside.

Cheap and cheerful, well situated for getting around lisbon, has all you need for a short stay. Don't expect a hotel, no reception etc. A comfy bed, clean shower, little fridge, kettle, breakfast table and chairs. Close to Time out market, Pink Street, train station and port. Would stay again.

  • 5/5 We3 T. 1 year ago on Google
After being awake for close to 48 hours, that bed was incredibly comfy. We were on the 4th floor, with a balcony facing the main street below. The views were great, and was the sound-proofing ability of the doors. When open, could hear the hustle and bustle of everyone on the streets and bars below, but when closed they blocked out all the outside sounds.

  • 3/5 Nuno C. 1 year ago on Google
Short but incredible experience. Not much of a queue at the bottom. Would recommend using a travel card, as the cost of a once off trip is expensive for the short two minute trip. Great way to get up the steep hill to explore the trendy Bairo Alto neighbourhood after a long and busy day exploring the sites along the river.

We couldn't resist a ride on this funicular, so very cute and quaint. We didn't have to wait long to get on, but it felt a little too busy once everyone had boarded. We got on at the front where there was already one person, but once four more people followed without considering leaving space for the driver, I soon had a backpack in my face (the tall owner did not remove it so they could hold on and use their phone simultaneously) and I had no view or space to move. Not the fault of the service but since there was space elsewhere in the carriage, it could certainly have been helped by applying a maximum number of people to each section. Would recommend so you've been, but not entirely a pleasant experience. We did notice the downhill journey looked much quieter, so if you want space to move and relax, that might be a better experience.
