The statue of the Duke of Terseiro is located in Cais do Sondre. The Duke of Terseiro was a nobleman of the highest Portuguese lineage. He lived from 1792 to 1860.

The statue to the 1st Duque da Terceira (Duke of Terceira), one of the most significant military leaders of Portuguese Liberal Wars that lasted about 6 years (1828 to 1834), a conflict that pitted two royal brothers, Dom Miguel, the commander of the conservative rebel forces on one side, and Dom Pedro, the Emperor of Brazil and then the liberal King of Portugal, on the other, should be seen in conjunction with a broader tour of the surrounding area, i.e. the entire Praça (square) Duque da Terceira, with its beautiful Portuguese traditional mosaic pavement, "calçada portuguesa", the interesting view, up north, of Rua do Alecrim (the first blue building is LX Boutique Hotel, which was portrayed by José Saramago, the Nobel Prize winner in literature, as Hotel Bragança, in his book The Year of the Death of Ricardo Reis, featuring one of heteronyms of the most important Portuguese poet Fernando Pessoa), along with the fanning roundabout perspective of two surrounding streets, Rua Bernardino Costa on the right, and Rua dos Remolares on the left, then the adjoining square Cais do Sodré, formerly of ill repute, featuring an interesting 1928 Art Deco building, the train station serving the resort city of Cascais, on the right, and, finally, the riverfront of Tagus, with its lounge-chairs-styled benches, a view to the river, its opposite bank and the bridge Ponte 25 de Abril on the right. To sit down on either the embankment, with your feet hanging freely above the water or stretch leisurely on the public benches featuring separate feet support, could be a great idea of a respite from a busy city life or intense sightseeing activities.

A very nice statue of the Duke of Terceira, the former Prime Minister of Portugal. There are inscriptions all around the base of the statue, but it's in Portuguese. He overlooks the gardens and waters on the south side.

The title duke of Terceira, de juro e herdade (meaning "forever granted") was created by decree of King Pedro IV of Portugal, on 8 November 1832. António José de Souza Manoel de Menezes Severim de Noronha, 7th Count of Vila Flor, de juro e herdade, and 1st Marquis of Vila Flor, was the first holder of the title. The Duke of Terceira was the head of the Manoel de Vilhena family. Heads of the Portuguese branch of that family have been ennobled since the marriage of Constance Manoel with King Pedro I of Portugal. Her brother, Henrique Manoel, was brought into her entourage, and he was made Count of Seia, in Portugal, by his brother-in-law, the king

It is a very busy confluence in Lisbon, almost always with traffic jams in the late afternoon. Want to know more places and tips for your trip? Visit our YouTube Channel: @trips.flicks

It smells like urine all over the square, it's a shame. It's sad and shameful how one of the most popular places for tourists can smell so bad. There are definitely a lot of people urinating on the street in this area and the City Council services seem to be doing nothing to minimize the effects. If there are a lot of people getting dirty, there would have to be daily cleaning, they have to wash everything daily! Or does tourism not generate enough money to wash the streets every day? The smell of urine in the center of Lisbon these days is very embarrassing, it's a shame.
