This cathedral is very different in style to the Liverpool Cathedral by Church of England but it is equally worth a visit! The story of its construction, especially how it would have been the second biggest catholic cathedral in the world based on earlier plans, added more colour to the visit.

I could see the metropolitan from my hotel and had to go see for myself, affectionately know as Paddy's Wigwam. This place is really a one of a kind, you will never see another like it. The outside is big but when you walk in to the main area the architecture and roof ate stunning and massive. There's loads to see and great photo opportunities inside and out. I highly recommend this attraction. You won't be disappointed.

Such a modern, yet impressive cathedral. From the stained glass windows to the stone carvings this wonderful cathedral is doused with intricate details on the walls, floors, ceilings and stained glass windows. This is one of the main tourist attractions in the great city of Liverpool and I hope you get the time to visit this place!

Beautiful place of worship! I love going to Sunday mass here with my family. I got married there in 2019, in the presence of my family and friends. The best day ever! The priests are lovely, friendly and approachable.

This beautiful church with lots of history, definitely need be seen. There is an excellent cafe with fab food, lovely gift shop, and the chance to go to the top and take in the great views of the Wirral, Mersey, and Liverpool areas. A fantastic 360° view.

Remarkable, unique, HQ and "terribly 70's" as well. (with a bit brutalist touches) Sir Frederick Gibbert's design (built between '62-67) is unquestionably unique & dividing. The whole architectural concept is very detailed and gives a vocational place for the in-cathedral activities. The building - shaped by the vision of a tabernacle - is one of the rarest central - circular buildings in Europe. Unfortunate thing that the inner pews don't follow the circular (Biblical) archi. vision: "Gd lives among us". The building talks about the main dedication/devotion: " to Christ the King". This is well expressed by the crown around the lantern tower. The northern, outer place has been built for outdoor ceremonies. The cathedral building is surrounded by a couple of beautiful (German) glass slabs. The southern (front) main entrance is decorated with bronze reliefs by the style of 70's – and you can also find a discreet café, right hand side.

Amazingly stunning interior, not 100% about the exterior as its slightly heavy on the 60's concrete architecture but a great place to visit.... Paddy's Wigwam is truly iconic 👍

Such a beautiful n modern style building standing in the middle of the city on a high platform. A lot of stairs u need to jump for entrance or there’s a step free entrance too. As soon as u entered this building, u feel the difference. Massive big giant hall with centre stage. Love that big ceiling blue light. So peaceful n relaxing atmosphere. There was practice going on for the main service.

Very modern. A case of architecture meets religion. The very stunning design hits you as you walk up the steps. Once inside the space is open and full of light. Look up to the roof where the coloured glass shines bright even on a cloudy day. One way system in place, good social distancing measures and hand sanitisation stations on entry and exit.

Visited Paddies Teepee as it was called after the Anglican cathedral. So different in structure but still as reverent and majestic. Bronzes around the walls show the Easter story they are quite grafic in detail and display the tragic story beautifully. Stunning wall hangings displays depicting several bible stories. Beautiful model of suffer little children come into me. Lots of steps up the building but there's also a path. Flat otherwise.

Attended here for my daughter's graduation and was worried about all the steps for my 82 year old mum. The staff were amazing and showed us where the lifts were. We were even allowed in early so we could sit out of the cold. A gentleman I think his name was Ron? brought us 2 bottles of water.

A stunning piece of architecture no matter your religious persuasions. If the staff offer a potted history then listen as it really helps contextualise the building and if you can afford to see the crypt too, it’s like seeing two different churches in one. Not essential but curious in its incongruity.

Don't go to Liverpool without visiting this Cathedral, it's amazing. The top tip for getting the best views is to go in when there is plenty of sunshine as the stained glass windows come alive , and are at the very best. I understand that you can't always do this , but if you are on more than a day trip you can plan ahead and visit on the sunny day. Believe me when I say that even on a cloudy day I would not have been disappointed, this place is unique in architecture and the layout is not what you expect. One place you need to see is the crypt, if building and architecture is your thing don't miss this , I love old buildings especially in city's but the crypt must be visited, very friendly guides and well worth the money in my opinion. Another tip is to go on the hop on hop off bus , as this drops you off right outside the Cathedral, as well as many other places you may want to visit.

Most definitely worth visiting. Beautiful interior design and numerous alcoves with varying artistic works - wood carvings, tapestries, paintings - extensive glassworks, and informative explanatory panels. Up there with the Cathedral in Los Angeles for moving and thoughtful design and art.

I really enjoyed visiting this cathedral! Earlier in the day we visited the Anglican cathedral; the two are very different! It’s quite an impressive sight to see this cathedral loom up at the end if the approach; it really reminded me of a spaceship as it’s so modern. Inside, I just loved the amazing colours from the stained glass panels, many quite traditional but others ultra modern. There is a wonderful feeling of light and space; I really enjoyed looking around. If visiting again I would go down to explore the crypt; we just didn’t have enough time today. Highly recommended!

Amazing contemporary postwar architecture. What I was really surprised about is originál plan for a second biggest catholic cathedral in the world. Due to second world war and death of architect the whole plan was reconsidered and completely different architectural approach was used to built significantly cheaper and more plain, but huge structure on the crypt (only part from originál project which was actually build). Concrete make amazing harmony with vitrage Windows and light inside is really powerful and spiritual. Love it

Facing the Anglican Cathedral at the other end of Hope Street, "Paddy's Wigwam" couldn't be more different. From the outside it appears rather functional. But inside, it's beauty takes the breath away. It is flooded with light from the stained glass panels that fill the space, with beautiful shafts of red, blue and purple filtered light. The crypt below is vast and quite breathtaking. It is topped off with the many modern works of art that fill the many nooks and crannies. Properly Epic!

A place that immediately helps all who enter to enjoy this beautiful Cathedral of Christ the King. It has small chapels around the center Alter area, each a place to kneel and pray or simple that the Lord for all that is good in life. Or seek some peace in one's troubled mind.

Amazing cathedral. Unlike any other. The light through the blue stain glass is beautiful. The huge crown of thorns hanging in the centre of the cathedral is a work of art. A tranquil and peaceful place that makes you feel calm.

This Cathedral is a beautiful place of serenity and calm. Its many chapels surround the interior of the building. You just need to walk around the cathedral in a full circle to appreciate the artwork in these dedicated chapels, much of it done by local artists. There is something there for everyone. The roof is a beautiful mosaic of glass and the altar is superb. You can't compare this Cathedral to any other. Its unique. You won't be disappointed.

100% WOW! Architecturally stunning, still very cool if you don't care about architecture as much as I do. Beautiful modern stained glass, amazing copper doors and the attention to detail is spot on. Makes a really cool hat for selfies but my head is too small for that.

This place of worship catches the eye from the outside let alone once you step inside. Traditional Churches, many of them awesome, but tend to be built to last, which of course many of them have. The are usually constructed from solid stone which, along with their age, gets discoloured by our relentless air pollution. That discolouration detracts from the otherwise splendour of such places, not with this Cathedral though. Looking more space age than any other Church that I have seen, baring Coventry, it's once you get inside that your eyeballs can't quite comprehend what you are seeing. It merges modernity with religion and it does it magnificently, its circular with the altar in the middle and if you pick a none service day, like we did, take a few minutes to walk around the perimeter of the building. Then you will see that no matter where you sit on a service day you will get a decent view of the proceedings. I cannot comment on the sonics of the building, maybe the sound system compensates for the tallness of the roof above the altar. I sat down for a good 10 minutes and just looked around and I felt that if religion is losing it's way in the modern world, then bringing the buildings more upto date may be one way to draw back the diminished flock so to speak.

Beautiful design. Especially appreciated the way on which the stained glass creates patterns in the cathedral. Paid extra for access to thevcrypt and recommend it. A wealth of knowledge about the history of the earlier and final designs. We couldn't see them, but there was a lively choir practicing and it added to the atmosphere

Simply breathtaking! I’m a Buddhist but I love to visit cathedrals when I’m in UK. Liverpool has two out-of-this-world looking cathedrals. This is one of it. It’s like an art installation piece.

  • 5/5 Harvey B. 2 years ago on Google
Very nice place peaceful, the glas us placed in such a way in this very modern style building that it catches the light in most spectacular ways. Not only that the glas has obviously been selected by eaple who must have know what they ware doing. That's because when we went at low sun the colours were breath taking. You could have thought that it might have been neon or led the saturation is such. But I don't believe it is anything more than glas in a wall, used to amazing effect. Then there is the shape which has some really interesting acoustics. Again fantastic. Free to enter, a big circular walk around inside. A sign that stated photos are permissable, but you can't use flash. An interesting building indeed. If you're nearby, I would definitely recommend for you to pop in and have a look around. I certainly didn't expect what I seen when I entered, being very pleasantly surprised. Note i read on a sign that there are venues held from time to time. I would speculate that there will be charged or ticked entry on those occasions.

I don't consider myself religious or a non believer for that matter. However this building is amazing, totally blew me away.I visited when Sunday service was on. I recommend and urge you to visit even if to sit and quietly have a few minutes of peace and quiet and reflection. I get that it's non conformist and not particularly 'Churchy' and to everyone's taste, perhaps that's the appeal. To be honest it shouldn't matter where you pray... Should it? Perhaps that's the problem with religion, non acceptance of others.

AMAZING CATHEDRAL Being raised in a Catholic school, I've heard about this place but never seen it for myself. It's super modern inside with neon lights and a circular layout so that everyone can see. When I went in, they were doing a St Bernadette Relic tour, so thousands of people had turned up to see the ribs of St Bernadette. Looks great from the outside too! Free to enter and people are nice in there.

I visited to pray to say thank you for the blessing I have been given and to ask for guidance. I was given a lot more, the Cathedral was not only beautiful and tranquil,, but every piece of art or display was fully explained in terms of being accessible. Every person young or old walking around to view the architecture was respectful. Just so very happy I dropped in.

Now, I will admit I thought we would be in and out of this Cathedral in about 15 minutes. We were actually there for nearly 2 hours! The crypt is a must see and well worth the £5 entry fee. A fascinating story of what the Cathedral was meant to look like. The Cathedral itself is very modern compared to other Cathedrals, but that doesn't retract from its beauty. I wish I knew her name, but we were shown down to the crypt by a lovely friendly member of staff, who gave us a quick history of the Cathedral. A definite must see if you are in Liverpool.

One of two cathedrals in Liverpool situated at the end of hope Street, locally known as Paddys wigwam, the outside does not do the inside justice, it's free to walk around, there's many interesting sculptures and paintings in the cathedral, if you wish to enter the crypt is £5 soon add up if you wanted to take the kids, there is a lift to get you down there and a disabled toilet outside the lift, plenty of seating outside and inside,

What an amazing building, even if you are not religious you should visit this cathedral just to admire the architecture. It is full of amazing light and shadows and us definitely something special. Places like this are best visited in complete silence so as to allow the mind to wrest and think about life, to meditate on family and all the good things in life . To also wrestle with the horrors that surround us and happen daily in this life. We have so much to be thankful for but sometimes we can forget that .

This is a very unusual and modern cathedral. Beautiful colourful artwork and images throughout which supports quiet reflection and prayer. I loved the circular design as this meant you had a view all around the cathedral and chapels. Mass was held in one of the chapels and the priest's homily was very soul searching. Amazing cathedral with friendly priests and lay people. Hoping to visit again soon.

Very beautiful Cathedral, inside and out very peaceful and serene inside ,apart from the main church with the altar in the centre there are 13 other small chapels , plus the crypt which is as good as the church itself, full of valuable treasures there's an admission fee to enter the crypt,it's easy to miss the crypt because it's size and contents are not very openly advertised, there's a lift to reach it if you are less able,my favourite view is looking up to the windows in the top of the tower with the light flooding through

The Catholic Cathedral in Liverpool is a place of serene beauty and spiritual solace. Its modern design is a striking contrast to its surroundings, yet it fits seamlessly into the cityscape. The interior is equally captivating, with stunning architecture and intricate details that inspire awe. During my visit, I was fortunate to witness the organist's performance. As I sat in quiet contemplation, the music filled the space with a profound sense of tranquility. I found myself drawn into a moment of prayer, deeply moved by the harmonious interplay of sound and surroundings. It was a truly beautiful experience that added an extra layer of meaning to my visit. While the cathedral's design might not be as traditional as some, its ability to create a space for both reflection and musical appreciation is undeniable. Whether you're a believer or simply seeking a moment of respite, the Catholic Cathedral in Liverpool offers an experience that resonates on a profound level.

Liverpool's Metropolitan Catholic Cathedral is absolutely beautiful. You can feel the warmth and peaceful atmosphere as soon as you walk in. You might hear the choir or the Cantor singing for a service, and it feels so spiritually uplifting. The building is beautiful and very welcoming. Definitely recommend a visit if you are a tourist. There's a donation box by the entrance.

Beautiful cathedral, unusual in its design and so modern compared to how you think about classic cathedrals but a joy to visit so quiet and serene inside the colours dancing through the stained glass were captivating. The most beautiful stations of the cross I have ever seen . But judge for yourself . Go visit and enjoy .

Interesting contrast between the world famous modern concrete structure built in the 1960s and the Lutyens crypt, which would have been the base for a vast cathedral that was never built.

Came here for a quick visit - Xmas Eve - 24-12-23 - after going to Carol service at Liverpool Cathedral. Two amazing cathedrals but very different in architecture. One is gothic and the other is modern but both are magnificent in their own way. The Metropolitan is amazing in the fact it is built in a circular shape and the architecture is more new and modern than its counterpart Liverpool Cathedral but stunning in terms of how it has been built as it is quite unique. We didn't stay for service but had a quick look round. Thank you to the security man for letting me take some pictures. I loved the nativity scenes and huge tapestry's. Definitely would recommend a visit here, day or night.

A truly beautiful modern building that is striking at any level - when looking at it from far away, or coming closer, or wandering inside, or walking around it. The geometry, the scale, and the colours of the interior are inspiring.

Went to the Metropolitan Cathedral to attend the midnight mass for Christmas. Anyone would love it for its architecture but I loved the place for its relaxed atmosphere as most religious places should be! The Christmas mass was a delight with rich music and spiritual mood.
