This bust of Noor-un-Nisa Inayat Khan, was erected in memory to a British spy and heroine of World War II renowned for her service in the Special Operations Executive. She was sent to occupied France to work as a wireless operator for the French Resistance. Betrayed by a double agent, she was tortured for months, but did not betray her comrades. Eventually she was sent to Dachau concentration camp and executed on the morning of 13th of December. This bust is a simple and elegant likeness of the heroine, showing Khan with a serene look on her face. A wonderful tribute to someone who wanted to serve her country and fight fascism.

This brave young Islamic woman of South Asian Indian and American heritage volunteered to serve as a secret agent behind the lines in World War 2. She was captured, tortured and put to death at Dachau concentration camp.

A bronze bust on a plinth attributed to Karen Newman* unveiled in 2012. An enigmatic and contemplative depiction. The “hollowed”iris/pupils amplify the inscrutable expression. Overdue recognition for the SOE agent/radio-operator, code named “Madeleine” betrayed and captured in France by the occupying German forces, interrogated and executed. Her notebook and radio codes falling into Gestapo hands allowing German counter-intelligence to exploit/profit from the debacle. * Newman also sculptured Violette Szabo for the SOE Agents monument on Albert Embankment.
