The museum is free to visit and tells the story of the Order of St John from it's origins in 11th Century Jerusalem to it's role today with St John's Ambulance. From the entrance, the right side of the museum deals with the establishment of outposts on Mediterranean islands, notably Malta, Rhodes and Cyprus after being forced out of the Holy Lands by the Ottomans. The left side of the exhibition, with the Knights long gone, looks at the development of a new role for the Order of St John through the grant of a Royal Charter by Queen Victoria in 1888 and the creation of the St John's Ambulance that exists to this day.

Exquisite architecture, the Museum of the Order has a lot charm, elegance housing thousand of years of knowledge. The Order has a fascinating history of serving others in need and battles to keep this missing alive. It was moving seeing extraordinary paintings and statues of Good Samaritan. Also see the extraordinary work of Christians, Muslims and Jews working to serve those in need, the poor and the sick.

The museum tells the story of the Order of St John. A history that goes back almost a thousand years. This order spend their lives caring for and protecting sick people, starting from the first hospital in Jerusalem in 1080, then a network of hospitals and in modern times through the St. John's Ambulance. There are guided tours available on Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 11am and 2.30pm and I'd highly recommended it. The guide went through the aforementioned history including the now defunct military arm and a lot more. The guide has access to parts of the museum not normally open to the public such as the grand hall which is fantastic. Well worth a visit for those interested in history

A small museum with two buildings and a total of three viewing rooms in both buildings. In the museum, by and large, there is not much to see. Since this Order is a functioning organization they provide for public viewing at additional charge under the pretext of two excursions at £ 12 each: in one building - a meeting room; and one room in the chapel, - it is in any circumstances would be difficult to call it a good value for money or reasonable to have it as two separate tours. The community was organized in the 10xx and positioned itself as a community for the provision of medical services, but as is often the case with similar orders such as the Jesuit and the like, a banal way of enriching themselves on medical services inaccessible at that time, kind of soft power, which is confirmed by their exhibition, mentioned the wealth of the order and the use of jewellery in decorating buildings, can't imagine that jewellery is critical for medical treatment; the military orientation of the order declared in the exposition, most likely, implies the looting inherent in such institutions at that time. It was a great discovery for me that the hospital museum that I saw in Valletta, Malta was their property, sounds like they are everywhere.

You can walk past this small museum and not even know it is there. Tucked inside an old gate house that dates back to 1504 is a great little museum tracking the history of the Order of Saint John. If the name is familiar it is because today this ancient order is now in fact Saint John's Ambulance service. Even though it is small it is full of well laid out and well presented artifacts. The history of the order is fascinating and amazing to find out. The staff are all extremely friendly and helpful, I would thoroughly recommend that if you are in the area do visit.

Museum is free. Several tours are available which includes the Orders crypt, church and rooms. The museum traces the history of the order from Jerusalem through expulsion and running battles through Rhodes to Malta with the expanding Muslim empire in the Mediterranean. And the Reformation and the Dissolution of the Monasteries. The order was restored under Queen Victoria.

I popped in here this afternoon having some time to kill. This is a nice, compact and very informative free museum about the St John's movement. I had a fascinating visit which was very illuminating and covers everything from the foundation of the order as a mediaeval military organisation through to the modern day medical experts.

Free admission. Highly recommend the guided tour as it covers a great part of the Order's history over the various areas. The tour also takes you across the street to the Priory Church of St. John. My visit was 3 hours. Gift shop present.

This is a hidden gem in this part of London. I went on the guided tour and learnt a lot about the rise and fall of the order both in this country and abroad especially Malta. The order dates back to the First Crusade. It was re-established in England by Queen Victoria and it is now more famous for the St Johns Ambulance which is a volunteer first aid organisation. The museum and rooms themselves are very interesting and then it is a short walk to the Italian Gardens and the Priory Church and Crypt. This is definitely worth visiting and going on a guided tour around

A gem of a museum in the heart of London. The museum in the Gate tells the story of the order right up to the present day. Suitable for all ages. The priory across a busy road has a nice garden and further displays. Well worth a visit.

Excellent museum with rich history of the Order of St John, St John Ambulance and associated organisations. Beautiful historic venue, would highly recommend taking a tour for a small donation, it’s the only way you can access some parts of the old buildings, church & crypt, the volunteers and staff are so knowledgeable, friendly & helpful.

The museum has two parts - exposition inside and a small garden nearby (100m). Gives good historical overview of the order. Did not know that this order got the assets of Templars after the latter was shut down. It is a good visit If you are nearby and spare time in your hand.

So proud to have visited the Order of Saint John Museum in London. Changes my whole perspective of the services provided by the men and women serving in my own country Fiji.

We had a guided tour led by a lovely gentlemen called Jiff. I highly recommend a tour as you get a more in depth background and access to parts of the museum that aren't open to all. We did the modern tour but I hope to go back for the medieval tour!

Beautiful building , full of history and hidden treasures. Spread over 2 sites with a secret garden which is almost sound proof. Staff very knowledgeable and friendly. A great venue to hold a wedding/ christening or even a family get together. It's a place you would walk past and think no more of it but once inside history and beauty become one.

Interesting look at the history of St. John's ambulance from the Crusades and the Knights Templar to modern times. I just visited the downstairs which is FREE and takes about 40 minutes at a very leisurely pace. The staff were friendly and helpful. The crypt and upstairs have to be pre- booked for a fee that includes a guided tour. It's a shame as I would gladly have paid to have a look at the historic crypt. The church across the square from the gate can also be viewed for free and has a tranquil herb garden.

A little gem where to spend an hour or two. Gorgeous architecture, nice artefacts and paintings, lovely garden. Unfortunately the church and part of the museum was closed and nobody to assist in the second location. Lovely otherwise.

Extremely friendly staff. There wasn't an insane amount of artifacts but the history was presented in such a great way that it was enough for me to spend an hour at least. Extremely interesting all around. Will probably be back to visit the other parts outside the museum on the guided tour.

The museum is tucked away at St John's Gate and is easy to miss - but don't let an opportunity to pop in pass you by! Combining medieval history with the modern day, the museum tracks the long and turbulent history that defines the Order of St John.

Small but quaint - great kids pack to explore and find clues etc so much history about the medieval origins of the St John's organisation - very very informative with lots of original exhibits.
