Nice example of a Tudor hunting lodge. Well preserved and open to the public for free. The chap there said about 80% of the timbers are original. It’s on 3 levels with some displays and info boards throughout. Definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area.

Great to see it open as was closed for a long time. If you are walking in Epping Forest then this is a great stopping off point for a rest, refreshments and the toilets.

Appears to be permanently closed, even during the school holidays when it should most certainly be open. What on earth is the matter with the clowns temporarily in charge of maintaining this historic monument?

Tudor history, dress-up, good location AND free admission; a great place to visit. A self guided tour card is provided on request as you enter then three floors of history await; the ground focussing primarily on Tudor food & the original use of the Hunting Lodge; the first floor has Tudor dress-up; & the third usually has a hands on exhibit concerning construction methods and materials for the Hunting Lodge. Sadly the dress up & construction exhibits were not on display this visit. Good for your own self interest and for kids, particularly when combined with a visit to the adjacent Epping Forest Information Centre. A garden backing onto Epping Forest offers outdoor space, perhaps to enjoy a picnic, & the Butlers Retreat is next-door for coffee, cake & snacks. The volunteer/team have been very supportive when visiting with children with special educational needs & disabilities (SEND), making visits accessibly, however there are stairs that may be difficult for those with limited mobility. There is a limited amount of paid parking at the front of the information centre and across the road - free for blue badge holders.

Well planned, beautiful visitor centre with shop, information desk, public conviences and a small permanent exhibition on the ground floor. Shop offers ice cream including vegan options! First floor includes a temporary exhibition space and a large, winding, immersive and interactive exhibit all about Epping Forest that is perfectly set within an amazingly conserved building. So creative and interesting. Right outside the visitor centre is the Tudor hunting lodge, which is also filled with information and interesting information regarding the forest's past royal use. Kind staff. A great starting point for all walks around the centre of the gorgeous forest.

A great building that has so much history attatched to it with Elizabeth 1st and Henry 8th being visitors or residents at some point . It’s been preserved as far as that is humanly possible to the point where the exterior timber beams have been painted the same colour as the rest of the wall in keeping with the times . The fireplaces have also been burnt out and replaced or refurbed , but to the naked eye the rest is as it was . Free entry so worth a look for the top floor views of the forest alone

A wonderful piece of history and the gentleman who works there was very informative and enthusiastic. This was actually my second time visiting, but this time I brought the children. They loved it.

Very interesting building and well worth a visit but not worth going out of your way for as a little sparse inside. Interior appears to be kept pretty much as it was originally, but unfortunately the Tudor beams on the outside of the building appear to have been painted over with white paint spoiling the appearance.

Waited for 45 minutes, when my turn & a long queue behind, to be told that, time to close. Should have told that they will not serve food even in queue at the time of closure.

A fantastic little view into history, surrounded by lots of greenery and nature on the edge of Epping forest. Great for kids and families, and with quite a few pubs, etc close by. We went there with a few adults and a baby, and really enjoyed the countryside vibes, mixed with a bit of history & general rolling around on the grass :)

Brilliant place to run a conference or an event / client meeting. So amazing to be able to use such a space. I’m not sure people realise all the history so it would be great if the events team always offered an intro to the history and purpose. Great place. Great facilities. Great location. Great staff. 👍

I fell in love with this place ( maybe the Christmas atmosphere in the area helped as well). It's very central , nested nearby the beautiful haute couture shops. The building is very spacious , interesting and pleasant. This is a great educational centre and I can't wait to follow and return for more events. This was our first visit attending the lecture of Dr. Kark Kruszelnicki ( seeing in the picture signing his books) If you are interested or have a child interested in science make sure you have this place on your radar.

A really beautiful historical building at the foot of Epping forest, it stands proud and dominates the landscape. You can buy refreshments here for the start or the end of your epping forest hike. You can also just go here without the walk just to look at the building in awe and to drink coffee with the most amazing view over the meadows and the forest. There is a brewers fayre next door for those who prefer a more substantial meal and an alcoholic drink. It is 5 minutes walk from chingford Station so easy to get to by public transport

Stunning architecture, and cared for. The guide was passionate and knowledgeable about the building and area. Really enjoyed this, highly recommend a visit.

Despite it saying it opened at 10 am it appears that it was 11 am the day I went. It left me more time to look at the centre and appreciate the history of the forest. It was all rather wordy and perhaps not that suited to young people though it was very interesting. They also had an owl exhibition on in one gallery. Worth a visit.

nice, very old building, with the decor of those times, you can enter every room for free, there is a large forest behind the property and many paths for hiking and sightseeing, I recommend wearing waterproof knee-high boots if you go in the rainy season, I highly recommend photographers for the whole family 👏 👏👏

Built by King Henry VIII for Queen Elizabeth I over 500 years ago a wonderful little example of British history. It's free and full of social history. Set on 3 floors (no lift or wheelchair access to 1st and 2nd floors). On the ground floor is the kitchen, on the middle floor the dining room and top floor viewing station of "The Hunt" across the clearing in Epping Forest. Check online for opening times. I take ALL my friends and guests there...donations are always welcome. There's parking AND it's next door to Epping Forest information centre, Royal Forest Hotel and Butlers Retreat. Great morning or afternoon out for the family.

Beautifully maintained hunting lodge, built by Henry VIII and renovated by ElizabethI. Friendly and very knowledgeable staff on hand to provide insights into the use and development of the Lodge. I would also recommend a visit to the nearby Epping Forest Visitors Centre and the Butlers Retreat for refeshments.

This started off as a viewing platform for Henry VIII who liked to do a bit of hunting in Royal Epping Forest.Well-maintained lodge and knowledgable staff. Nice walks nearby. Parking.

  • 3/5 Michael B. 3 years ago on Google
Interesting building. It is slightly confused inside: does it want to be a museum or just a space. The surrounding area is beautiful of course, but the lodge's proximity to the road takes away from this, not to mention the big security alarm on the outside of the building!

Hunting Lodge is an essential visit if you are in the area. Good for well behaved youngsters who can dress up. Some historical items and well labelled displays. The visitors' centre has a good range of gifts, souvenirs and educational looking toys. The range is very similar to the nearby Epping Forest Visitors' centre.

Faraday Museum and library are fascinating. They do school visits and seminars too which is good. However, I did my school work experience there many years ago, and they split me off and put me on the reception desk/admin. duties instead of with the scientists like they did the boys even though I was a science A-grader too. And then they wonder why fewer girls go into STEM. Hope things have come along. That was about 20 years ago to be fair.

Came here for a lecture on Particle Physics and I was greeted by a friendly receptionist who helped me find my way to the lecture hall. The building is beautiful and very interesting. I will most likely be attending several more lectures here! The physicist who lectured there also happily helped me and recommended me another physicist who could help a friend and I's Fusion research project!

    A. Ma. Zing. We've been here many times now as my daughter is a member and we love each trip. This talk was riveting for each of our group, Kevin kept us all entertained and enthralled. The podcast is a fantastic listen too and will worth it. We can't wait to visit again.

Iconic Temple of Science and Critical Thinking. Never have I been disappointed there, nor should I think anyone would ever be! If you can catch a lecture or an event in the place where Faraday and many others changed the world, don't pass it by - you'd come out enlightened, one way or another.
