Excellent venue for more interesting jazz (ie less of the easy-listening, cocktail bar-style jazz that you might find in some other venues), some of it of very high quality. There’s a very friendly, welcoming vibe. The venue is not large, I guess it will squeeze in c.100 with 60-70 or so seated. Seating is theatre style rather than sitting around tables. Arriving at or near door opening time will get you a seat. It also packs in a reasonably priced bar.

We had a great night at Vortex, with its well deserved reputation as the place to be for nonstandard / experimental jazz. Apparently the place was recently refurbished and the atmosphere is perfect - small and intimate but also dynamic and exciting with the vibe and line ups. The place pretty much nailed it with hosting the Julian Siegel Quartet. We did wish the background music wasn't switched on quite so quickly at the end, in case we could get an encore. But a perfect night out all in all!

Nice club in North London. A bit cramped, but the acoustics were OK. Good local vibe in the area outside with good options for casual food and drink. The drinks in Vortex were reasonably priced, but not the best. Run by volunteers, who were all passionate about the place. The main downside is the poor connections by public transport. It makes an interesting counterpoint to Ronnie Scott's, the other main Jazz venue in London.

I think London tends to be a pricey place but bargains can be found everywhere... and at £5, the entry fee for 2,5 hours of pure musical joy that is the Sunday evening jam session @vortexjazzclub is an absolute steal! Warmly recommended!

a very unique Jazz club in Dalston. I Love it! Only little problem: you cannot pay with the credit card at the bar.

Intimate venue tucked away just off Kingsland Road. Superb jazz always! Intelligent, experimental, modern jazz that is both accessible and intricate. We have sat in cabaret and theatre style here before - prefer theatre.

They scrapped the main thing I liked about it ☹️ I used to enjoy being in the Vortex when it had cabaret style seating, which allowed audiences to sit with a glass of wine on the table before them, lost in the jazz. It’s now gone to cinema-style seating (except with small folding chairs, densely packed) with a substantial proportion of customers left standing or - as we were -perched on a windowsill. It’s distractingly uncomfortable & crammed. I understand the economic case for this, but I now find it more pleasant to listen to the music at home. The music is really good, though.

Maybe not quite the same vibe as the original in Stoke Newington but still well worth the effort for top notch and reasonably priced jazz. Team lovely as ever and bar prices reasonable. Branden Lewis Quartet delivered a top notch set

Such a great night out tonight at Vortex, John Etheridge gtr with Ian Thomas dms and Jim Watson keys just blew us away with exquisite blues / jazz! And possibly the finest version of Little Wing ever played in there ... And the volunteer staff are to be highly commended indeed, a great venue, one of the best in London

Vortex refurbished! The stage area being against one long wall and seats now arranged in 3 rows around it gives a very intimate atmosphere. Gone are most of the little round cafe tables giving a much friendlier feel. Sound system upgraded at great expense - a worthwhile largesse but reflected in the increase in ticket and drink prices. A new practice is to have two gigs in one night and you choose which session you wish to see. The venue is run by volunteers so often wants to close promptly after the end of the last gig. Alas the downstairs bar is currently closed so no longer can we continue the musical conversations there. Through its connections and history, the Vortex gets some of the best contemporary jazz artists performing. Well worth a visit.

Nice, small and intimate venue. My first time there. Will be returning again. Went to see The Alex Hitchcock Thursday early evening performance 🎵🎷

Haven't been since lockdown. They have redecorated. Acoustically jmproved buy they have lost a bit of the homeliness. Great jazz concert yhough, with a devastating turn from the saz player,

12.50 for that room wasn't good, especially when you've travelled a long way....didn't feel like a jazz club...but the actual gig was good.

Beautiful music. We attended on the 14th Feb and heard the trio: Heidi Vogel – Voice James Kitchman – Guitar Bruno Heinen – Piano We have heard them on YouTube and Apple Music etc but this kind of music has to be listened to live to be fully appreciated. The venue has a reputation for hosting fantastic musicians and it didn’t disappoint. This club is more of a seated music venue rather than a bar (though there is a small bar).

Here I listened to the highest quality of jazz. The music is super, the atmosphere relaxed and friendly. I respect and love their attitude to provide such level of music and also invite the públic to actively play and sing. Warmly recomended.

If you like good music and jazz, you must definitely try the Vortex experience. Good bands, excellent staff, best service. One of the classics of London to not miss out.

Music was good but the atmosphere was cold and not very fitting for a jazz bar. Wine was really over priced and not good

Wonderful venue for jazz. Great selection of artists, friendly staff and drinks are reasonably priced.

Small, intimate jazz club, slightly off the beaten track. NFP status may be reflected in the price of the drinks, but it is currently hosting some very good jazz artists!!

A North London Institution. Consistently great bookings. Decent acoustics. A labour of love by the volunteers who run it. Site of many great musical experiences for me. (Although I still miss the old site in Stoke Newington before shyster developers turfed them out and demolished the building).

Very simple jazz club with good bar run by great people, mainly volunteers who make miracles inviting great artists and fantastic audience - we had a great pleasure to enjoy Espen Eriksen Trio with Andy Sheppard live!

We have been coming here fairly regularly for 8 years. By no means are we Jazz Savvy but we are in awe of talent and fascinated by extending the bounds of music to a width and breadth not previously imagined by us: and then we find both of those things covered here at the Vortex. There's no need to even mention individual artists at all as we have never seen anyone who wasn't a virtuoso at their best. Why only 4 stars? Sigh, the toilet situation....

Super venue, with friendly staff and a really welcoming atmosphere and regular top notch talent on stage. It's worth going to as often as possible!
