What a great hidden gem. This cinema has so much history, life and thoughtfully decorated with tasteful art, lighting and classic furniture. Each theatre has its own unique character - few of the theatres have comfy couches with bar service so you can kick back watch a film and drink your favourite cocktail. Great spot to host events on all scales. Must check out when in London to watch a film, host an event or have a coffee & work in their main lobby. Family owned. Support local businesses.

My new favourite cinema in London. I visited today to watch The Many Saints of Newark (Sopranos Film). It has a cozy vibe, good screen size, comfy seating, wide selection of snacks and staff are very friendly. Tickets are £5.50 from Monday to Thursday and £10.50 from Friday to Sunday (peak hours). Highly recommend. Will be visiting again soon.

I was there for the 1st Hong Kong Film Festival UK, and I am delightfully surprised by the size and interior of this cinema. Not only it is way bigger than I expected, there were food stalls, and nice spaces for display or exhibition purposes. I was also told Theater 1(the one I was in) sits over 350 people, and it looks and feels very spacious and comfortable.

A true gem! During our week in London, my husband and I actually went twice.🖤 It was awesome to watch movies while sitting comfortably in sofas with a blanket, table for our snacks and even an ottoman for our feet. The perfect middle between watching a movie in the comfort of your home and going to see it in theaters. People frequenting the place are usually movie buffs and not the annoying loud crowd you often deal with in cinemas, thankfully. I also love that they often show older movies or have theme nights. It's such a fun ambiance.😍 The only disappointment was that some of the candy in the self-serve section wasn't too fresh. Otherwise, I just wish there was a Genesis cinema in my town! We'll definitely miss it.🍿🎬

Outstanding independent cinema theatre. Great selection of current blockbuster films. The seating in the baby screenings is more comfortable than home. I'm so glad this place exists as it is a much more worth while experience than any Cineworld or VUE cinema and much better value. Excellent cafe to the front of the premises that boasts very comfortable seating and an array of café choices and lots of vegan options. Lots of movie treats available such as popcorn, nachos and even pick and mix sweets. Really friendly and pleasant staff who make you feel very welcome. Well worth a visit. 5 stars well deserved. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

It's amazing! The obvious things, you can't take in food that they sale, especially popcorn. Saw a bag in a box, but they gave her a ticket to collect the item later. There's an exhibition there too, and seems like an event was going on. It gave a nice vibe and the seats are super comfy. Limited studio viewings but worth a visit or three. Great, low-key cinema in East London. Good selection of films, cheap ticket prices with plenty of lovely but, expensive treats including freshly made popcorn from an old school popcorn machine and a great Pik N Mix. The building is classically decorated and has an art deco feel to it, the chairs are comfy but low/deep so kids (or maybe even you) will likely need a cushion (there are plenty at the back stacked up in each screen). The screens are not the biggest but are ok and the sound system is basic but effective and loud enough. The staff are friendly and helpful. All in all a good, low-key (still busy though) and traditional cinema not far from Shoreditch to go see a film. Would recommend checking out if you want somewhere more classic and less commercial with a light arty feel in East London.

Construction nearby doesn't allow to get a good look at entrance, but like the old school looks preserved. Very nice and friendly ticket taker as well as bar attendance. Young people, I like that very much. Plastic wine "glass" , no excuse 4 that. Fairly clean, can't judge the technical aspect of the projection as the film was 60's looks. For the price I'll go again and recommend.

Decent measures in place for C19, although the temperature check was rather abrupt and aggressive, they came at me with the digital thermometer out of nowhere and were standing way too close. Also the temp check is after ticketing, so what would happen if you are feverish? Seems like a way to make more admin work trying to get a refund etc. Cinema snacks are quite tasty and not overpriced. Cocktails are also very good, decent strength and average price for a "trendy" East end spot. The screens are way too cold, I had to put my coat back on halfway through the film. The toilets were in need of a round of cleaning.

Very nice and comfy cinema. We booked 2 tickets on the sofas and it was amazing. Extremely comfy and there were just 2 more people in the screen room so it was very chill. The drinks and food are accessible as prices and despite the fact the cinema just reopened, the variety of movies available is really good. I would definitely recommend this cinema especially if you go on a date!

This was an unexpectedly fantastic experience. My friend hired a screen for her big birthday (I'm not allowed to reveal numbers). The screening room was very clean, the seats were comfortable, the sound system was of the highest quality. We then headed to the bar, where we socialised and just had a jolly good time. Thank you very much to all the staff who made it happen!

This movie theatre is so cool and different, because it has a lot of style. The screen is not that big and the seats feel kind of old, but somehow that just makes it cozy. I would definitely recommend!

This place has been a favourite of mine for years. The cinema is well kept and I appreciate that they even run events related to film / culture to try and build a community. It's independent and definitely feels unique. Makes for a more special experience than going to just another Vue. Have always enjoyed the Studio 4/5 screenings, with the sofa and blankets and foot rests. Not many places do a "luxury" cinema experience like that. The tickets at Genesis are pretty cheap most of the time as a student, usually £7 or so. I really appreciate that! However, the food there is insanely expensive, and they have a security guard confiscate "outside" food from you even if it's just a bag of popcorn. I get that they need to make sales to stay open but from the customer's perspective it's a bit annoying. One thing that did impress me when I went to go see Tenet most recently, was overhearing some of the staff talking about the film and hearing that they had a passion m for films. I got the impression that, had I just gone in and asked what they would recommend that I watch, they would make an adequate suggestion. Overall, if you live nearby I'd encourage you to keep supporting Genesis as our local cinema.

Lovely cinema, the screen in the studio is a bit small. I would appreciate it if the person in the projector room could watch their YouTube with headphones while screening the film. I could hear it throughout the whole film. The seats are very comfortable, and I really like the ottomans provided.

Hípster vibe, nice bar and pies, but screen way too small and audio too bad for 2020.

Yeah Genesis Cinema is a great place to go to because I did an internership there and I loved it because of the environment. All the workers there are very helpful and during my time there, I had no problem with genesis cinema nor with any of my colleagues what's so ever. Because of this, I felt content in my heart working there and I wish one day I can come back and work with them as soon as possible. The good thing about it is that everyone respects each other and help one another whether that be customers or colleagues. All the staff's are very good at dealing with customers which I'm very proud off and I never seen any staff's during my time in genesis treat any customer's bad service, it's always on point and very excellent. During my internship in March, the government announced the lockdown and I was very upset because now I had to do something else and I couldn't even finish the internership program and the work placements with genesis the way I thought it will be.

Cheap rates on weekdays and a lot of attention paid to social distancing. I felt safe watching a film here, and loved the vegan hotdog beforehand (as did my carnivorous girlfriend). Top place - get back to the cinema, and do it here!

This is my favourite cinema. They have a full bar and the studios with those cozy sofas are just amazing. Next time I should order an espresso martini at the bar

Not Covid safe. In the screening I went to everyone took their masks off. It was a small screen so this was extra unsafe. The staff did nothing (at the Rio they tell you to keep your mask on). We were not evenly spaced and one of the rows had more than 6 people. I tried to tell them about this afterwards and they dismissed me. I used to love this cinema, not anymore. Go to the Rio instead, they actually care.

A nice independence cinema, the screens are of a reasonable size although nothing to write home about. However their selection of films is what truly makes this cinema worth of a visit. The upstairs bar is well equipped although often lacking staff making the queues terribly long. There is also a restriction (search policy) on bringing food into the cinema which seems a little lame. Staff are friendly and helpful which makes up for the fee shortfalls.

Great place to watch films, take the family or dates. Food and drinks on sale are excellent, from pizza, hotdogs, popcorn and cocktails. They do events and have a cafe down stairs that’s perfect for meeting coffees with friends. Loses a star because in the big screens people just talk and take photos throughout movies which gets pretty annoying.

  • 4/5 SV J. 1 year ago on Google
Friendly staff, old-school style cinema which is nice. Screen is a bit too dark inside before the movie starts but seats are comfortable. They don't let you take in your own snacks (they actually have a bouncer who checks your bags in advance), which I understand as they're a smaller cinema and should get the revenue from their own sales, but is a bit annoying as we didn't know that in advance, and every other cinema allows it now in exchange for increased ticket prices.

Two great nights out this week at Genesis. So lovely to be back in cinemas. Studio 5 for Queen and Slim and then Parasite. What a great local cinema. Lovely staff, great prices and so comfortable. Thank you

The interior in the front was very old and ripped. I don't know if that's is intentional design decision, but it in a very sharp contrast with the nice screen hall. Also the lighting was net suitable for a standard up, and even the performers were making jokes they can't read their script, and had to use their phones flashlight.

Lovely little off beat independent cinema, clean, friendly a little quirky and showing a good range of films so something for everyone. We went to see the Blues Brothers brilliant to see on a big screen a real spirit lifter in these COVID times :))

It's an independent cinema worth visiting as they show movies that are not only mainstream but also independent and short movies as well as form part of different movie festivals, such as, e.g., the Fringe Film Festival in London. Also, in the building there is a bar area where you can sit down and have a drink before or after a movie. The seats are not numbered so first come first served.

The place was lovely and the staff great the presenters at the event kept us all informed about what was going on and what would be taking place including the photographers taking pictures everyone was dressed up and most of the outfits were absolutely brilliant all in all I would recommend this place for any kind of event party ect well done to the organisers and the people who worked really hard to present the show everyone had such an involvement with it all. Definitely worth my time coming to London from Sheffield to watch my grandson along with other young people do what they are good at. Wish I had their fashion sense 💝💝

Absolutely best movie theater I’ve been to. We’re from america and were in London for a week. We decided to watch a movie and were greeted with amazing customer service. They have blankets and couches and the prices for the concessions are not as terrible as I’m used to. It makes it even greater that they’re independent. Will come back next time we’re in town!!!

The cinema is great, with huge comfortable double sofa seats. However, they need to sort out the food and drink situation, as there are 3 places downstairs and upstairs to get food from, but it's not clear what you you can get where, so you end up having to go up and downstairs if two of you fancy different things. Bizarre.

  • 5/5 Mark B. 3 years ago on Google
A great cinema. This is a real local jewel. The food is well worth a visit on its own. They also run a great coffee bar if you’re just passing during the day. They consistently have great well thought films on show and without the crazy prices of the big chain cinemas. Plus the atmosphere is better.
