St Matthew's, Bethnal Green, is an Anglican church built in the 18th-century and designed by George Dance the Elder. Like other designs by Dance, the church is very similar to St. Botolph in Aldgate at least in the exterior. The interior is very different, gone are the wide pews. There's no much in the way of elaborate art inside, but here are the usual depictions of the saints and scenes from the passion. The later done in stone relief, but in a very contemporary style. The grounds and gardens of the church are pretty extensive with plenty of seats to sit down and just enjoy the grass and trees and in the summer, the flowers too. Nice to visit if in the area.

Lovely churchyard and so tranquil. I used to help out here in my teens when I played the organ for the occasional wedding or funeral. Very sad how the congregation split in two over women priests. Theology aside it was all so political and Maciavellian. From what I hear on the grapevine St Matthews is doing very well under the pastoral care of the present incumbent. Very glad to hear it too.

St Matthew's is an inclusive church, part of the Inclusive Church network and offers a warm welcome to all. It is in the Anglo Catholic tradition which offers a chance for sacramental worship with contemplation. It also knows how to have a good time and doesn't take itself too seriously .... but it takes its mission and welcome to others very seriously indeed.
