After living in the Los Angeles area for a couple of decades now finally made it to this Museum! We came here for a Native American Arts Festival that was being held on the museum grounds. The museum is excellent and has a very good display of Western history! The Native American Arts Festival was also very nice with lots of vendors selling high quality Native American arts and crafts! We are going to have to come back and visit the museum.

No Longer An Old-West Museum What once was a shining museum of art & artifact bearing the name of one of the most beloved cowboys, has turned more into a "message" of current cultural direction in the west. Our visit on a Saturday was met with an empty parking lot & not a docent in sight. Several exhibit halls are closed on both floors, which leaves very little to do, as even the traveling exhibits have very limited displays & have very little to do with what the name Autry evokes. There is however a common thread throughout the halls and exhibits, that of today's cultural direction. Author talks, regarding racism and slaves was today's topic. An audience comprised of mostly "woke" Anglo-Saxons were being lectured on the Civil War. Last time we visited, we were treated to a uniformed "Buffalo Soldier's" account of the time period, and it was a great learning experience that was remembered. The western gun display is nearly cleared out, someplace in mothballs, leaving the exhibit completely lackluster now. Where we stood and snapped an old-time "behind bars" picture years ago, has been replaced with the plight of the incarcerated video booth/experience. A more modern take on the new-west I suppose. The guards were all very kind and encouraged us to see the "Dress Codes" exhibit before it moves on; a glorified lesson on jean culture, and what to wear to a gay bar video. "Dress Codes" is a far cry from "Sparkle & Twang" that we enjoyed over a decade ago when The Autry still shined. We ended our trip at the museum bookstore, hoping to purchase a nice piece of American Western art, or memorabilia of Gene's Melody Ranch, only to discover the widest variety of urban books that have little if not nothing to do with the West (pics.) Though there were still some worthy things to see, the Bison diorama, the refurbished stagecoach, and the (albeit very limited) western landscape artwork, what we would like to see is a new Museum Director. It has gone by way of the modern era, no longer a step back in time and a tribute to the old West. Happy Trails

The Autry Museum of the American West is a museum in Los Angeles, California, dedicated to exploring an inclusive history of the American West. Founded in 1988, the museum presents a wide range of exhibitions and public programs, including lectures, film, theater, festivals, family events, and music, and performs scholarship, research, and educational outreach. It has two sites and attracts about 150,000 visitors annually. In accordance with the recent Los Angeles city ordinance, proof of full COVID-19 vaccination is required to enter the Autry by all visitors. Visitors with medical or religious exemptions will be required to provide proof of a recent negative COVID-19 test taken within 72 hours, in accordance with the ordinance.

We visited this museum while on our way to Griffith Observatory. While it the museum is good, it has a lot of contexts all together. On a side note, if you bring your Bank of America cards, you have free entry

Museums big or small, I just love it. The Autry Museum of the American West (then the Gene Autry Western Heritage Museum) opened its doors to the public in 1988 with the goal to collect, preserve, and interpret materials related to the history of the American West. It’s located in the heart of Griffith Park just across L.A. Zoo! Here at Autry Museum you will discover the art, history, and cultures of the American West! The Autry features world-class galleries filled with Native American art and cultural materials, film memorabilia, historic firearms, paintings, interactive areas, and more. I came here early Sunday morning to avoid the crowd. Admission ticket prices start from $O to $14 bucks. This museum showed good exhibit and surprisingly good. I learned a lot today regarding WWWest and Native Americans of the West. Floor plan: Two story level. Gallery exhibit: A LOT! Time: Spent 2 hours. Parking: Fr33. Plenty of space. Staff: Professional Overall, I enjoyed visiting this museum and I recommend it.

This museum has a very nice collection of antique guns in pristine condition from late 19th century. A lot of first model Colts. If you like guns this is a good place to check them out.

I live close so I am there frequently. This beautiful museum houses many pieces of art, collectibles, and memorabilia representing culture from the old West. Don't miss it if you're in the area.

Well maintained museum with slot of art murals of western era. Murals of the wild Wild West days to the gold rush days. Posters of John Wayne and drawings of Michael Jackson. Western clothes on displays and Michael Jackson’s outfit and white gloves. Even a replica of the western bar and so much more. Prices are not bad, about $12. The museum is usually not busy either.

This is a great museum, they are having more old fashioned clothing on display in May*They have a small garden and the coolest exhibition is probably the fake bulls which looked so real, I loved those. Travel back to the wild west and visit Gene Autry*Sometimes the museum has free days too*

Went to see the exhibit about Fashion and clothing. Lots of interesting pieces and some really spectacular ones. My toddler really liked the ethnobotanical garden and the life-size horse statue he got to sit on.

I have been to this lovely Museum since high school (We had our school play there). Now, nearly 20 years later, it's where I go to reset after being away from home for a long while. When you visit, make sure you visit the outdoor courtyard with the garden and waterfall. My all time favorite exhibit is the California Road Trip located on the bottom floor. Plop down on the cushions, close your eyes and soak in the sounds. Finally, stop by the beautiful gift shop full of the usual merchandise but also a wide selection of books and art pieces at reasonable prices. The people there are friendly and helpful. It's a small museum by museum standards but it's a gem...a must see if you're visiting LA. Enjoy!

Can't believe that people don't usually visit this place so fun and I learned a lot about what Californians are where we come from and potentially even where we're going. It talks about the LA River and its history as well as people that live here thousands of years ago and the Spanish taking over as well as did you know the family story with the sepulveda boulevard? There's tons to know and a lot of cool guns with history. Come time-travel land make it a nice picnic Day old Western style.

I went on a Bank Of America Free Weekend. Bring your BOA card and ID and it will be free. Check the BOA website for details. I spent 5 hours here. There is free parking, a reasonable cafe on site and its directly opposite the LA Zoo. Lots of interactive exhibits for younger children. Being an Aussie I loved finding out more about not only the West but about the history of LA and their native people. Exceptional.

The Autrey Open House collaboration with KCRW 89.9 was a mighty fine time! The chuck wagons /food trucks were great. We tried the Venezuelan Street dog and we’re still dreaming about! You know it’s a good time when the DJ gets a big crowd dancing at a country western museum. The exhibits were amazing and eclectic, from historical pieces to creative art pieces. I appreciated how they integrated diversity into the exhibits. I remember when I was younger how this museum was about ‘How the West was won’ but now it shows a more comprehensive development of the west and how it relates to our modern life. I would love to go back to the museum to learn more.

I happened to just stumble upon this museum, and honestly I am so glad I did! I had no idea what to expect and it was such a gem, a mix of art and history in one place giving my brain and my heart so much to think on as I went through the galleries that were open. If you enjoy history and having a good think on what western expansion really meant and the lasting effects it's had on different cultures and the land, then by all means this is a great place to spend a few hours.

Went for the Street food cinema and it was so much fun. All you have to do is buy your tickets, and you can bring chairs, blankets, food and drinks! They do have food trucks and free sample non alcoholic drinks around the venue. JayZ’s tacos Carné Asada burrito was so delicious. Parking is free and you can park close just come when the doors open! They have chair rentals for $10.

This museum has some incredible artifacts, and many of the exhibitions are quite well done. There’s a few that could use a facelift. The thing is, I left without really understanding what their narrative was. There wasn’t any sort of cohesive theme running through the galleries, besides “west” but still, what does that even mean? There were Iroquois artifacts which was especially perplexing. I appreciate their inclusion of diverse and marginalized voices but at the same time the whole thing was just too all over the place for me to make sense of. I would also add, as a curator myself, hanging oil paintings the way they did makes it impossible to see any detail. The aesthetics of a “gallery wall” shouldn’t take precedence over being able to actually see and enjoy the works of art.

Visited the annual exhibition of new works by Western artists. So much fun to see pottery, painting, sculpture in wide variety of styles. The preparation and presentation of the exhibit is also part of the enjoyment. Popped into the other continuing galleries - fascinated by history of the West from the First People to modern times. The food in the cafe is actually quite good, so an enjoyable afternoon. Gene Autry gave us a wonderful gift.

This is an excellent location, right off the I-5. It is a very lovely venue, both inside and outside, pleasing to the eye and mind. Staff and docents were extremely welcoming and helpful. There are a broad variety of exhibits, something for everybody. I was especially interested in the Native American Art and its commentary on contemporary history and culture. Also, the information and displays about indigenous craft and art were valuable. Overall there is a great variety of information about the history and development of the west. I plan to return and learn more.

Western Music Show was awesome! Had a great time listening to great music. They will be doing another event, I believe, in March 2024. Come out and support these great performers with your presence and enjoy the Heritage of Western Music. See ya there!

About two or three exhibits were closed due to renovations, but other than that, i enjoyed learning about California's western history. It's not that big of a museum but still informative. It's only $7 & children from 0-12, I believe, are free. They have a little outdoor space with "rocking horses" kids will enjoy. Their griffin park exhibit is kid friendly. There's an area in that exhibit with a little play house & books for kids to enjoy. So it's a nice little hidden gem within griffin park.

Lovely exhibition on Native American culture. Despite the fact that Native Americans roamed these lands years ago, I generally found it quite hard to find any decent exhibits or Museums to go to in LA and surrounding areas. I spend around an hour in their exhibition and would like to think it reflects some of the older practices. The main message I took away from this exhibit is that humans don't have to destroy the planet, in fact, they have proven methods to vastly increase the productivity of the lands, through traditional native practices... Fire isn't all bad!

  • 5/5 Craig E. 11 months ago on Google
Unexpectedly excellent. Wonderful art displays - native and classic western. Pristine old west firearms collection. Nicely done.

  • 5/5 Pepper G. 11 months ago on Google
A must have spot for a weekend trip with kids or friends. There are a few floors with exhibits, firearms of the west collection is quite extensive and the stories and knowledge is abundant on each firearm, you can sit on a plastic horse, but in a real western saddle and make pictures and feel how the cowboys felt back in the day, they have a fully restored 1948 Indian road master motorcycle, it's a gem. There is lots of art of local artists depicting time pieces from the local history, mythology and notable events.

  • 5/5 Elliott M. 1 year ago on Google
Worth the 15$!! Really cool exhibits on indigenous ecological practices, an immense firearms collection, and a nifty section on western clothing trends! Parking is plentiful and you could easily spend 6+ hours in here to see and read everything

The Autry is one of the great museums. Featuring exhibits of both America's real historical West, and that which is portrayed by Hollywood westerns. Including the great tribal nations of the region, Spaniards, Mexicans, Californos, Asians and Americans. As of this visit (April of 2022), several of the galleries are closed for renovations and new exhibits being installed. The Autry is constantly updated to offer new and returning exhibits to see. The Autry is wheelchair accessible, many of the displays have audio descriptions. And is located across the street from the Los Angeles Zoo within Griffith Park, near the I-5 and CA-134 interchange.

A fantastic museum and well worth visiting. I came for their Dress Codes exhibition but ended up spending half the day there also exploring the other galleries which I hadn’t planned. Not only did the artwork draw me in but the exhibition design and interpretive text is eye-catching and well-designed. I look forward to coming back in the future and will def be recommending this to other museum goers when they’re in the area.

I went here for the Native American Craft Festival and it was amazing. It's a jurored event so all artists are vetted before entry. It meant that only authentic, high quality art and artists were present. It was amazing to see the art and talk to artists who were keeping traditions alive that were almost wiped out. It was great to talk to and support (and okay, shop!!!) all the art, jewelry, knives and clothes there. It's every year around the end of October or beginning of November and I highly recommend it.

Fun for kids and adults! Came here on Mother's Day and had a fun time taking pictures of my kids with the cool illusions. We didn't purchase tickets in advance, we walked right in and we were able to get in.The Museum of Illusions is a great family outing. It's kind of small, so you can easily take pictures in each room in less than an hour. This is definitely a place to take a bunch of cool pictures (yes, instagram worthy) full of vivid and amazing paintings.
