Food was amazinggggg!! Went back and ordered extras because it was that good. Have strong regrets that we only tried this on our last day in LA but it was absolutely worth the 20 mins walk we took. Everything we ordered (even the 'basic' avocado toast) was so delicious! Tim is also one of the sweetest, most hospitable and humble person we have met in LA. The passion he exudes when sharing about his food (and love for his cat haha) is admirable and contagious. Personally bringing our food to us, explaining the menu and giving recommendations etc. We will definitely revisit this again when we are back in LA!

Broken Mouth is located in a slightly sketchy location so we were worried when we parked our car on the street. Aside from that, it's like a food hall where there are multiple food vendors and an open cafeteria seating set-up. It was our first time trying Broken Mouth so the owner made us some recommendations and even offered us 2 Lilikoi cans which is a famous soda (?) in Hawaii! Beef Plate: This comes with Hawaii's Meat Jun which is egg-battered ribeye beef slices. It's served with the meat jun sauce, purple rice, & Korean greens. The meat jun is just so creative, unique, & delicious that you're left satisfied after eating this meal. The egg batter around the beef can get soggy if you get it to go/delivered so I recommend eating it at the food hall if you can. We poured the sauce all over the meat and left a bit for dipping. Everything was so good as individual components and as a whole dish. The flavors & textures have all been perfected. I don't understand how purple rice can be this soft (but not mushy) and so tasty on its own. Then you have the Korean greens to just balance everything out. Shrimp Plate: This plate comes with 5 pieces of Kahuka-style garlic butter shrimp, purple rice, & Korean greens. These were the best, juiciest garlic butter shrimps I've ever had. The garlic and butter ratio was on point and so flavorful. Definitely need to come back to try the spam musubi next! ----- Overall: 4.3/5 (08-05-2023 Doordash group delivery) We put in a huge order via Doordash for our Hard Summer pre-game party. Unfortunately the food wasn't as amazing as the other times we had it and it's enough to drop the rating down half a star. Hawaii's Meat Jun (Beef): Still the best bowl here. The beef is just so flavorful, tender, and always cooked to perfection. We got half purple rice and salad. Unfortunately the purple rice wasn't as good for all bowls this time around too. Teri Chicken: A lot of the pieces were burnt on the surface and it wasn't as juicy as I was hoping for chicken thighs. Shrimp: These garlic butter shrimps were good but are much better when eaten fresh in person. I also don't like that the shrimps have their shells on since I hate eating them, eating around them, or peeling them off. Potato-Mac Salad: This is definitely my preferred potato Mac salad. Not overly creamy and doesn't taste heavy. Cucumber Kimchi: Oh my goodness these were addicting! My husband and I loved this so much, I think we could eat one portion each! A must have side :) Spam Musubi: I was really excited to try this since our cousin was raving about it but it was sorely disappointing and the least tastiest item we tried. ______ The owner Tim truly stands behind his food and cares about customer satisfaction. He reached out to me after my review and offered to make it right. He decided to remake the 3 items I wasn't satisfied with and have me re-try them on the house. We had a nice chat in person as well. I can definitely see why Broken Mouth continues to be on Yelp's top lists in multiple categories. Spam Musubi: It's much better than the last time in terms of flavor but a tad bit salty. There was also a bit too much rice for my liking but not a big deal. Garlic Butter Shrimp Plate: So I found out that you can ask for your shrimp to be deshelled. I definitely liked it a lot better since I feel like it really soaks up all the garlic butter flavor. Definitely the umami bomb I remember when I first had it. The purple rice also soaks up the butter so there's more of a consistent flavor with this plate. Teri Chicken: It's a generous portion of chicken thighs so we had a little bit left over. They were grilled beautifully this time and were so tasty, it was hard to control myself. There was a good amount of salad too so it helped balance out the chicken.

This place is a gem in Downtown LA! I had the Beef Lunch Plate with egg-battered rib eye beef, purple rice, and salad. Pair it with the Passion Orange Aloha Maid and you're good to go. The location is in a dining hall next to other restaurants now but is just as delicious. The owner/restaurant manager was very helpful and courteous. Pay them a visit today. You'll be glad you did!

TRY THIS SPOT!!! The 5.Stars are all well deserved.....these plates are full of flavor and texture Had the: Beef Plate - amazingly tender and soaked in flavor Chicken Plate - killer breading and the sauce was awesome. Heated but not overly spicy and definitely didn't take away any flavor Shrimp Plate - breading is super light and tasty Braised Potatoes - omg....such savory flavor Pickled Carrots - kinda sweet and light and super palate refresher Cucumber Kimchi - fresh and crunchy and just enough spice to add a little texture but not spicy The Plates come with Purple Rice and Potato.Mac - both perfect Hawaiian sides. Rice is steamed with what looks like furikake sprinkled on top - soooo good. And the Potato.Mac has a great texture that doesn't get too creamy. The Chef/Owner was extremely nice to us and we talked about the menu for a minute and he seems like a genuinely nice person who sincerely cares about this food and his customers. There's passion in this food for sure.....and passion fruit in the drink fridge!

The chicken plate comes with a purple rice seasoned with furikake, a side of potato salad, and a spicy fried chicken. The spicy level is light to medium depending on your tolerance. The spam musubi is usually my favorite, because it’s quick, easy, and affordable. Broken Mouth is a great counter serve spot located in DTLA. There is usually a lot of seating and street parking is the closest. The beef plate is also really great.

I’m giving them four stars because my friends loved them and spoke so highly of the service, the owner of the restaurant / chef makes all the recipes and he was so kind and gave us drinks for free on the house, and he even remembered my friend from the last time he visited and knew I was a newcomer bc he’s never seen me before. I would say that’s what propelled the four star rating. The service, the kindness of the owner, and I know he works hard to please customers. It’s located in a little mini food court type place, I got the shrimp bowl bc my friend hyped it up a lot but I don’t think I’m a shrimp person — it came with the shells and I didn’t really like it; it’s personal preference. the purple rice was good but the lettuce / spinach in the bowl was heavy with flavor / seasoning and kimchi which I think I would’ve preferred it to be lighter. I would recommend coming here though because they are a small business and I think the taste is something a lot of people would like overall!

Wow! So many positive things to say about this place! Went here on lunch after reading up about the entire menu being gluten free (except the sandwich bread), and was blown away by the owner and the incredible food! He was excited to see me when I arrived, asked if I’d been there before, and when I told him it was my first time, he loaded me up with some extra things to try - thanks, now I will HAVE to come back many many times for these incredible flavors! 🤣 Only thing I regret is not spending more time with him and being in such a hurry over illegally parking out front. If you haven’t been here, you need to race over and immerse in the spot on Hawaiian flavors typical of island culture. You will not regret it!

I saw this spot when passing by the neighborhood and their food items looked good, so we stopped by to check it out. I ordered the Hawaii's egg-battered ribeye beef slices on a bed of greens, two spam musubi’s and a side of their garlic shrimp. The egg battered ribeye was delicious and was different but still awesome. The spam musubi’s were also delicious and some of the best I’ve ever had. The garlic shrimp were crispy and flavorful. I ate them with the skin on & overall it was a great lunch. I’d definitely come back here again & thanks Timothy. Parking is very limited to the street or paid parking garage.

Tim exudes Hawaiian hospitality, with his warm and approachable greeting, and his breezy friendly attitude, as he walked us through the menu. Oh, I'm supposed to be rating the food right? I got the shrimp plate, which comes with shrimp, macaroni salad, and purple rice. Tim mentioned that he typically eats the shrimp, shell and all, but that some people may not like this and that you can peel it if you'd like. I opted for the shell and all, and it was crispy and easily chewable. Was it garlicky enough? Let's just say I had to go to a networking event after, and chewed a couple sticks of gum, and still felt my breath would deter any unfortunate soul who needed to lean in to hear me say my name. Although I found the shrimp slightly too salty, this was balanced pretty well with the macaroni salad, and the purple rice, which was my favorite of the 3. The furikake seasoning tasted of salted egg yolk with hints of sweetness. I might just buy an extra helping of rice next time!

This place, and its owner, are AMAZING! We each got a spam musubi and split the beef lunch plate and, let me tell you, it all tasted so fresh and next level incredible. Flavors and textures off the charts. The owner is super kind and you can tell how much love goes into the dishes. Great portion sizes too for the value. Will definitely be back.

So bomb! Everything is made fresh and seasoned to perfection. I’ve had the chicken and beef. Excited to try the shrimp next. Also, that cucumber 🥒 kimchi is fire 🔥 I also really love the spam musubi 🤤 which I took home and plated with Lee’s special hot sauce.

Ohmagah. Cnt spk proprly coz mouf brokn 😂. Shiiiiiiii everything here was so bomb. I’m usually a little more critical of Korean-fusion foods (in this case, some Hawaiian-Korean), but I was throwing myself at every dish here. The flavors are all so strong and come together beautifully. You can literally order anything off the menu and can’t go wrong.

Stumbled upon this restaurant during a recent trip to LA. Once I saw 4.9 stars, I knew I had to look into it. This place is rated the #1 restaurant in the USA on Yelp and I can see why. Not only is the food delicious, but it's reasonably priced and the owner is an absolute gem. I highly recommend ordering from here.

Their shrimp bowl is the best! Beef bowl comes in a close second. But please bring back the macaroni salad…it really helped tie all the flavors in. It’s not the same without it :/

Yassss all the hype is spot on. Also Tim was very sweet to us when my friend and I came in before the opera. We highly recommend! I had the Portuguese sausage breakfast plate and Spam Musubi. My friend had the shrimp plate. Everything was flavorful 😃🤤

Had to see what all the hype was about, and it did not disappoint. Broken Mouth exceeded my expectations in every way. Some of the best food I’ve had anywhere. Great prices on top of great food. Don’t hesitate and go eat here. We tried almost everything and loved everything we tried! Best food around!

It’s not often that non-vegan restaurants do vegan food well AND at such a great price. The tofu lunch plate hit the spot. The spices and sauces paired so well (I asked for the spicy sauce on the side). On top of that, Timothy had such wonderful service. 10/10 would recommend you to come!

This place was great, the potato macaroni salad was a so good. The battered rib eye was tender and had a great flavor. My wife loved the spam musabi. Ask for the hot sauce. You can thank me later. Couple things could be better. 1. they give you a spork. Impossible to eat a meal with that. Please buy some forks. Next item is.. the only bathroom had no water to the sink..

Absolutely a delicious food sensational gem. I work just outside of DTLA over by Dodger Stadium and will go out of my way to get eats here. My favorite is the Kahuku-style garlic shrimp with purple rice and potato-mac salad makes will bring you back over & over. Get a few Spam Musubi too. They are the best in LA!

This is the Shrimp and chicken lunch plate, both were amazing, I think the shrimp was tastier, but either way I highly suggest this spot. It’s a hole in the wall, very small corner joint, but the chef/owner and his wife run the place and they each personally greeted us and made sure we were having a good experience, it was very nice. The food is Hawaiian fusion, the dishes were very unique and full of an assortment of spices that went very well together. The also gave us a free dish of pickled cucumber, also delicious. I’ll definitely be coming back here again!

Broken Mouth is the best Hawaiian food i’ve had in LA! Chef Lee has obviously poured his soul into these recipes and it shows. His Spam Masubi is my favorite iteration i’ve had and the chicken teriyaki plate was packed with flavor. The portions are generous and well worth the price. Chef Lee also offered me an Aloha maid on the house. This place left an impression and I can’t wait to return!

First visit and the shrimp and beef plate lunch was full of flavor and delicious. Subbed one salad for the kimchi cucumbers (yum). Street meter parking looks like it can be challenging but we found a spot quickly as we arrived around 1:00pm. We will be back with the rest of the family.

I had the Local Plate which is the Portuguese Sausage plate that was very good and the service was outstanding. The sausage was grilled on open flame which provided a different char flavor than usual. Order ahead because I walked up the first day at about 1245pm and they were not taking orders due to high volume. However, I ordered online the next day at 11am with no problems because Tim was nice enough to call me to ask if I wanted my order earlier than expected. Thanks Tim! The Korean Greens are basically a green salad in Kimchi marinade and it actually works really well. I would like to include cucumbers in this but they are already a separate side order. The spam musubi had too much furikake for my taste but was still flavorful and unique with the purple rice. I'll be back to try the beef, shrimp, and chicken plates.

Such a lovely experience!! The cashier (who I assume was the owner?? mayhaps??) was really sweet and helpful. Got the shrimp lunch plate and my GOD it was so delicious !! I love purple rice, so that was great, and the shrimp had the shells on (which I enjoy) and cloaked in garlic butter, I need to go back ASAP. My friend got the spam musubi and enjoyed that a lot as well!

I love all the overall experiences I had in this restaurant I ordered pork, but it was too much for an adult man to eat This place was very friendly and pleasant! The clerk asked if it was his first time in LA and I said yes, and he gave me a drink for free A great place for both taste and service 1000000/10

Chicken teriyaki has a real nice smokey taste to the burnt bits. Beef was super tasty with the sauce. Salad greens had plenty of Korean sauce goodness on it. Also very filling in the end. Bread pudding is a nice large cinnamon bomb if you like that taste. Also super nice guy running the shop who wants to spread the good tastes and super welcoming for a first time

Fantastic Hawaiian Korean fusion food in a rustic setting. This is a great lunch or to go place. This is a fast food place with gourmet food. We ordered the shrimp plate and the cucumber kimchi. Both were the best we have ever had. When we visit from Seattle this is a must stop location.

I rarely give 5 stars, especially for take out places. If you like Hawaiian food at all you need to make a trip here, go 2 hours. It's not healthy really (can't be authentic if it was) but the first bite had my mind go blank with amazingness and the owner was a delight. Wait was about 15 minutes so I would call ahead if you have time, but you need to come here. And get the egg. The breaded beef melted in my mouth with flavor and the egg added to it over the purple rice. The masubi ingredients together were a story in melding flavors The hot sauce is so unique in flavor but still has a good heat. Bravo

Just tried for the first time. I got the chicken breast plate. So good! The potato-macaroni salad was great and the rice, I can’t describe except to say it is addicting. I am going to have to make this a weekly indulgence!

Awesome little shop run by Lee, who brings his home recipes from growing up Korean in Hawaii. Got the beef and it was amazing! Thin strips of super savory beef on a vinaigrette salad bed with sesame rice.

Grabbed the spam musubi and steak plate, both were great!! Everyone was nice and I loved the sauce that goes with the plate. Just an FYI, you gotta find street parking if you’re coming here but it’s worth it!

If I could commit a crime and be locked away in Broken Mouth jail, I would without hesitation. My final meal would be any of the plates, but beef and shrimp are particularly phenomenal. Not only are the flavors outrageous, the service may somehow trump the Hawaiian fare. The owner often recalls if you’ve visited before, and I’ve never NOT walked away with a thoughtful gesture like an extra drink on the house. On my last trip I was even given a complimentary spam roll to try. As long as BM stands, I will gladly serve as patron in perpetuity.

  • 5/5 Bishop R. 4 years ago on Google
Fantastic. Great flavors, very pleasant and somewhat affordable. I say somewhat, because you want to spend more money just to try everything. The vibe was great, the owner say is within minutes of waiting and gave us the breakdown of everything fairly easily. I wanted to go for something more unique off the menu but i had to try the chicken sandwich and honestly it was worth it. Especially with the avocado mash, the slaw was vibrant and made for a great combination ultimately. Because of that I wouldn’t say they just have a “classic” chicken sandwich, definitely stands alone. I will definitely be back, especially because my friend still won’t stop talking about the shrimp that he had there, so i will have to see what that’s about.

Miss Hawaiian garlic shrimp? This is the place. I tried Giovanni’s truck and Remy’s while in Hawaii, but this place has the closest, even more buttery flavor. If i have to have the very last meal before I leave los Angeles, this is it. If you miss legit spam musubi? Try theirs.

  • 5/5 steve s. 3 years ago on Google
Omg the best shrimp in the world.....all I could say was omg every time I took a bite of the shrimp. Just as good as Giovanni in hawaii.

  • 5/5 Charles C. 2 years ago on Google
Just went yesterday for lunch and was disappointed it was take out only. Went with the garlic butter shrimp plate. Reminded me of the famous shrimp truck on North Shore. Super tasty, nice size shrimp, served with purple rice topped with seasoned seaweed shreds. Tried the pickled cucumbers, which were good too. Beware parking is hit and miss as this is in the heart of the garment district. Friendly staff! If you are in the area, I would highly recommend you stop by.
