This is a cool spot with a few shorter hikes ranging from east to moderate. The easy hikes take you along a sandy, relatively flat dirt path while the moderate hike takes you up steps and rocks. If you do get a chance to climb up to the top of the trail overlooking the valley, you might get a chance to spot a hot air balloon taking off. This park is part of the National Park Service but it is free to enter and offers free parking.

This was a neat experience for us. We did the easy trails by the bathrooms. Too hot to hike up the hill.

Very well set up and easy to navigate. The hill was pretty steep, but we saw people pf all ages traversing the area. The view from the top is pretty remarkable Good clean bathrooms and a decent amount of parking. The bathrooms are a bit removed from the main hill. The walking paths around were made up of sand, some boardwalk and some choppy asphalt. Definitely worth stopping to see!

Wow....now this is a trail. Leave the little kids at home because they may have a difficult time climbing up. The trail is marked but not super easy to figure out which makes it interesting and you really have to pay attention to where you step. I kept thinking that if I take a wrong step, it's an instant trip to the ER. The petroglyphs are really cool to see although not as interesting as the ones I've seen in Hawaii. You can see some pretty early in the hike so for those who can make the climb, you can check some out before things get scary.

We went to 3 out of the 4 parts of the Petroglyph National Monument. We liked Piedras Marcadas best but this canyon had the prettiest single Petroglyph of all sites- the macaw. There are two parts of this canyon: at the first parking site you encounter is the mesa trail and it is steep and doesn't have many petroglyphs but has great views from the top. The second parking lot has two trails. The very short macaw trail has arguably THE best Petroglyph- the macaw. The ancients traded macaws from what is now Mexico. The cliff base trail has lots of petroglyphs. Most of the photos are from the cliff base trail- don't skip it.

Awe inspiring! Only had about an hour so I went to the Boca Negra Canyon. You can spend as much time as you want and still see some very nice sites.

I had an amazing time hiking and exploring this area. The petroglyphs and views of the volcanic rocks were incredible. There is a great view of the city here! The cairns are beautiful too!

Must go! This is where a lot of the petroglyphs are at. It's a nice walk, not super far. You can see quite a few right at the beginning. I do recommend going all the way to the top!

Lots of petroglyphs available to be seen with short hikes. Worth checking out if your in the area. There have been car break ins within this parks so it is advisable to not leave any objects of value visible within your vehicle. Gate closes at 4:30pm everyday.

Beautiful sites! We enjoyed our hike here. Be warned, there is a trail up the canyon but it does still involve some climbing.

Slightly upset that NPS has these trails listed as paved and accessible. They are technically paved, but a wheelchair could not go over any of them. We were frustrated because we didn't know this until we got there. The trails were moderate I'd say solely for the steep stairs and some didn't have railings. We still did them fairly easily, even in the heat of the day.

Want to see the petroglyphs? But not go on a 4 mile hike? Boca Negra is the place. There are a few choices of short trails but the least strenuous is to go around the loop til you get to the bathrooms. There is a trail either side of the bathrooms. They are short and easy so check both put. Takes 15-20 mins. Cost $2 if you don't have a National Park pass.

NOT HANDICAP ACCESSIBLE. I went to this part of the park because it said it had "improved trails" and photos showed paved trails. But what it didn't show was the slope of the pavement and the fact that they paved around rocks along the trail, and put in steps. Only place a wheelchair user can access is one pavilion that has bathrooms and a viewing scope. That's it. But other than the amount of painful walking I had to do, it was a very interesting place. And several images are visible from a very short distance along the trails.

When I arrived to Boca Negra Canyon I was a bit confused about daily use pass if it was needed or not. Fee collection station had a sign that it was discontinued so I assumed I didn’t need a pass. This place gives you access to Mesa Point Trail, Macaw Trail and Cliff Base Trail

We were visiting after a few hours climbing around Bandolier National Park, so our legs were already tired. We first went to the visitor center, which is located a few miles down the road and only had a shop. We were directed to this location as an easier walk to see the petroglyphs. Once we got there, parking was extremely limited, so be aware. Once we got to the trails, we quickly realized that the "easy" trails still involve a lot of climbing over rocks and stairs, so we only saw a few of the drawings. The ones we did see were neat, but they were also interspersed with modern graffiti and names carved into the rocks, which made us sad to see. If we ever return to the area, it needs to be a several hour visit with rested legs to climb to the top. I've also heard that the other canyon site has more than here. Overall, a neat piece of history to see once, but avoid if you are short on time or tired.

Nice hike up the mountain. It’s not a terrible hike, small mound of basalt, but it was so hot that by the end I couldn’t tell if I was sunburned or having heat stroke. The petroglyphs were really awesome and the information signs were good.

Short hike, and challenging (didn't feel comfortable with my younger kids hiking all the way up) but definitely recommend it! There are several petroglyphs to see here. It shouldn't take too long and there are picnic areas too. Don't forget sun block and water!

I'm so glad I stopped here. 100 petroglyph to see, 2 of the hikes are very easy to navigate with just a few steps leading up to a view of the carvings, the 3rd is climbing a bit steeper with a beautiful view when you reach the top of the mountain. It was free to enter during my visit, there is a booth that looks like they use to charge an entrance fee but it was closed. The park is very clean and well maintained, bathrooms are clean, they have a water station to fill up your water bottle, 3 areas for parking including a place for rv's .

The petroglyphs at Boca Negra Canyon are pretty visible, however the facilities are the most rundown of the national parks. Graffiti dots some of the stones, indicating the need for more protection. Still, it’s pretty amazing that you can get so close to such ancient places. While there are trails, most of them are not wheelchair accessible, so keep that in mind when you’re trying to view the petroglyphs.

Recommended for an easy way to see the Petroglyphs. There are some good examples here but I can not compare to the other trails. It was enough to satisfy my curiosity.

Wonderful 3 short climbs that let you see close to a hundred petroglyphs! The Mesa point is a 119 feet climb but the views are worth it. Not accessible for strollers and wheelchairs. There is only parking for about 15 cars though. If you pack a picnic lunch there are 3 picnic tables to sit and enjoy.
