Dodgy bar with lots of unsavoury patrons looking for a scrap

Fantastic staff and a great pub, but there's a giant sign on the front of the building which says "Poker league every Monday and Thursday. *registration*: 6:30 PM. Tournament starts 7:00 PM.". Yet when I arrived at 6:30 PM they'd already started playing and I'm told it's too late for me to register. Weird.

It was great to catch up with people I haven't seen for a while on Petone day!

Haven't been back here for 23 years. It's changed alot but food, service and entertainment is awesome. Played back place and worth it.

First ever time here. Had a leisurely jug of beer and coke & raspberry for the kids. Lovely bartender said if need more raspberry to pop back up. Better..she gave my boys a complimentry bag of chips to munch on later. Great service..great prices..relaxed venue.

It's layed back, don't have to dress up. Atmosphere is superb, meals are great, drinks are reasonable and it has pool tables and a gaming room . May not be flash but overly packed sometimes.

There’s a lot to like about The Thistle. Beer (craft). Food. Ambiance. Close to the Stadium. Close to the Railway Station. If you’re down this end of town or heading to a concert or game I’d recommend it.

Loveingly restored pub with lots of character. We used the upstairs space with was perfect for a large function with room to spread, converse and dance. Staff very helpful and friendly

What an unexpected delight to find this place. While extremely busy the staff were very efficient, warm and welcoming. The food we had was wonderful. The place had a great atmosphere, was really alive and buzzing. When we left a staff member kindly ordered us a taxi to the airport which we were most grateful for. The food was fantastic. Our menu had a choice of three options, and each sounded yummy. Service was also very good. Only down side for our large group was that it was a bit loud that made it harder to hear those on your table.

Gorgeous old building! Lots of old world ambience. Really tasty food with generous portions. Their cheese dessert platter is massive! Two of us could only eat half of it.

It looks old, it is old with recorded history for you to see. We were with a tour group so maybe you would not have staff give details as easily that we got them. It's a pub with a bit more. Pleased to have gone but would not seek it out as not a pub person. Pleasant staff.

The staff are always next level friendly, helpful and welcoming. It was a very nice touch to be offered a taster of a wine when undecided and even when they're really busy they still have a smile and don't let their level of customer service falter

Thistle Inn is an iconic Wellington gastro pub, conveniently located for Parliament and many government agencies based in Thorndon. Well over 100 years old, the building has been well-renovated and provides good-quality meals and drinks for hardworking public servants. There is also a set of function rooms upstairs.

Good friday night action. Staff were friendly and helpful. Knowledgeable on wines and good food served well and promptly.

Crazy expensive. Ordered nibbles of prawns and got 6 prawns for $18.00! Asked for my money back and got it. Talk about ripping patrons off.

Went here for a Christmas lunch which was really disappointing & very pricey. Had to order off the set Christmas menu albeit maybe due to communication error with the person who booked. For $50 we got a modest main (it was nice) and a petite desert (option for Xmas mince custard or no joke.. A few Strawberries and cream) . This was One of the most expensive meals I've ever had and I'm not really sure what my $50 went towards, especially as similar items on the normal menu didn't cost that much. Perhaps it was the cheap Xmas crackers on the table?? It also took half an hour for our order to be taken and the main an hour and 15 minutes from when we arrived to come out. Too long for a lunch time booking on a work day catering to a corporate crowd. Normally the thistle is great but this was a disappointing experience 😢

What a joke of a place this is. On a All Black game day, they were running around singing Karaoke, as soon as kick off time came they cranked up this karaoke thing by bunch of stragglers. Totally uncouth, I mean who does this? We went there to watch the game, its part of our culture, had to leave about halk time. These Indians are going around buying local pubs and running it like a dairy, they have no idea about kiwi culture, so offensive and disgraceful. Never again.

I enjoy my visits to the Horse & Hound, I am not a regular, it's no frills, the staff and customers are really great, it brings back memories of the pubs in the Taupo District, I used to live and work in Tokoroa in the 1960s, it has a good atmosphere and I have found the patrons to be very friendly and I have enjoyed the snacks, TAB as well and everyone behaving themselves, agree it's not the place for a candle lit supper but a good place for a beer and chat 10/10%

Super friendly staff working there, the lady they check my vaccine passport was very kind. They have good selection of beer and have some good whiskey there as well. I also like how big and open space the bar has.
