An interesting museum where you can find out about the Luxembourg history and evolution of its culture, and social development. It is highly recommended if you want to have an overview of the city as a tourist or even if you are living there. The museum building is a mix of old and new structures as parts of the museum are houses dating back to the 17th century and also there is a modern glass view of the museum extension. The entrance fee for adults is 5 euros but it is free on Thursday from 18:00 to 20:00. The museum is closed on Mondays.

Well organised and informative museum. It covers all the aspects (economical, political, demographic etc) of the history of this fortress from the start until nowadays. You need more than 2 hours to tour yourself around in a comfortable pace and reading the information. The is also a panoramic terrace, which provides nice views.

Empfehlung! Eintrittspreise mit 5 Euro fair. Personal spricht englisch.

Bit of a maze but worth doing. I'd recommend doing a walking tour first. So you can understand the history better.

The visit takes 1 hour and the entrance fee of 5 euros also gives you access to the Villa Vauban (Original) Très beau musée. Il retrace l'histoire de Luxembourg. I went here because the tour guide said this was his favorite museum in Luxembourg, but in my personal opinion the Museum of History and Art is much better. The layout is a bit confusing and I didn't find the exhibits to be particularly inspiring. Still giving it 4 stars because the staff was very friendly, and it's not a bad way to spend a rainy afternoon in Luxembourg.

Nice Museum, you can learn a lot about the city. 5 euro/adult. Important: because of COVID, storage is closed. If you have backpack you are not allowed to come inside.

Beautiful Museum in the middle of the city. It provides very good overview for the history of the city and the people working here are very friendly and helpful. Highly recommended to visit. It is one of the must visit places in the city. This place has some very interesting items to see and the user experience is absolutely amazing. The narrative provided for the visitors are very informative and interesting. This museum is very comfortable and disabled friendly. I could only say good things about this museum and highly recommend others to visit (specially good for kids). Cheers and wish this recommendation would be useful for others.

Excellent museum experience. I've been to a handful of museums over the years, but this by far surpasses all. This establishment has a story to tell about the city, and it tells it very well, without boring audience with irrelevant minutiae. Level five where posters are exhibited is an added bonus!

Way bigger than in looks in the pictures, schedule your time appropriately (i failed in doing so 😅 ) Lots of artifacts and a great presentation of the history of Luxembourg. I knew nothing about the city (or the country to be honest) and after the visit i feel like a scholar 🧐 And as a bonus they have a HUGE elevator that you should absolutely ride and a really nice terrace with a great view! Free lockers available (required for your backpack) and nice staff. Almost every text also in english.

Very pleasantly surprised by this museum 🏤 that has permanent exhibitions 🖌📽 but also temporary ones. The visit costs 5 euros for Adults and is free for children and students. When i've been there, the temporary exhibitions included the history of food 🥣🍜🍽🧃 and posters exhibition advertising events ✈️🚲🗼🎭💃from the current and last century. The exhibitions are mostly related to Luxembourg history or specifics, which is very nice thing to see.🏡 The huge elevator (the size of a room) and the panoramic terrace are two extra points to this museum, next to the VR room where you can virtually see parts of the old Luxembourg. 🥰👏👍😊 The exhibitions are exposed on 5 floors, but the time required ⏳️ to complete them is not too long (I estimate maximum 1h30m).

This place was full of surprises. I got the entry free with purchase of the ticket of Villa Vauban. This museum has an amazing view of the old town from the 3rd floor. Also a gigantic elevator the size of a room within a stone shaft with transparent walls. Inside you have an immersive experience with an old Luxembourgish charm. A true discovery, l recommend this one.

A really nice place to know the history of Luxembourg City. Also has a wonderful panoramic view of the city from the building.

A superb museum where you will discover many interesting facts about Luxembourg's history and also some nice temporary exhibitions. I also love the amazing elevator! 👍🏻

  • 5/5 Beatrice S. 1 year ago on Google
I highly recommend visiting the museum. It has multiple expositions, some of them are permanent, some other are temporary. The one about the history of Luxembourg is fairly interesting and shows the country 's heritage in an original and colourful manner. The museum is located in a beautiful spot in the city center, with a breath-taking view on the valley. Worth visiting for tourists, but also just for common Luxembourgish or expatriés🇱🇺🦊

  • 3/5 Maryam A. 2 years ago on Google
Recommend to visit. You need around 3 hours to fully understand the history of luxembourg. Two floors are also dedicated to other exhibitions.

  • 5/5 Lance Y. 1 year ago on Google
The museum tells a good story of Luxembourg starting from the Roman time when it’s just a small settlement through different periods of European history. They offer a free English tour, which is informative and interesting.

  • 5/5 Pukar B. 1 year ago on Google
Very modern built yet old school at the same time with interactive artifacts and occasional recreational activities made it a very worthwhile visit. The ticket is free for students under 26 and also provides access to another museum in the vicinity.

  • 5/5 Loïs 1 year ago on Google
Excellent museum. It can be free if you take a 5e ticket from the villa Vauban which is also very nice. You easily learn about Luxembourg's history and evolution.

  • 5/5 Tamara P. 2 years ago on Google
Amazingly organized museum: you go to the lowest floor where the history of Luxembourg starts (around 15th century) and as you come up - you see the development. Real time machine 😅

  • 4/5 Marcin T. 2 years ago on Google
Interesting historical museum of the city of Luxembourg with a free entrance. Much more interesting to visit than Musee Drai Eechelen (a museum dedicated purely to the history of the fortress, located on the other side of the river). Also it's very convenient that it's usually open till 8pm. On the content: I loved the multiple models of the city at different moments in history. However, as a big fan of history, I wish there was more of a historical narrative presented here. Also the navigation around the museum could have been marked a bit better.

I studied abroad in Differdange, Luxembourg and came to Luxembourg City several times during that time; however, I never made it to this museum. I decided to go on my excursion there yesterday. I loved every minute of my time there. The layout is beautiful and I learned some new things about Luxembourg. I also enjoyed the special exhibit and seeing all of the engravings. Consider this on your trip to Luxembourg. I don’t think you will be disappointed.

  • 5/5 Gary C. 11 months ago on Google
Don't let the understated exterior and entrance put you off, this is an excellent museum, and great place to spend a couple of hours. Whilst the space is not huge, it is arranged over a number of floors, with all of the exhibit areas very carefully and tastefully put together. The entrance fee is only 5 euros. The three lower levels consist of a permanent History of Luxembourg exhibition, showing the evolution of the city through the ages, and the numerous complex factors that have played a part in shaping the Luxembourg of the day. The upper three levels house a temporary exhibition, with a captivating look at "associations" (guilds, clubs, other tribes of people) on our visit.

  • 5/5 Alice N. 4 months ago on Google
This is a fantastic museum and it’s free entry. You need to pay for the temporary exhibition on the top floor but there is floor after floor of history starting from prehistoric. The French information plaques can be easily translated using google translate. I recommend adding this to your list of things to see in Luxembourg, it’s worth a visit.

  • 5/5 Reosia N. 4 months ago on Google
Very nicely designed museum. With every step, you can find something surprising there. You can learn about Luxembourg-ville itself, European union and see some art as well. There are descriptions of almost everything in French, German and English! ♡ It's easily accessible for people with disabilities, there are toilets and lockers.

  • 4/5 Riz M. 8 months ago on Google
I really enjoyed my visit at the Luxembourg City Museum, which is free for students under 26 and includes another local gallery also. The main exhibit offers a comprehensive history of Luxembourg and spans multiple floors, all accessible by both lifts and stairs. The centrepiece of the Museum is a gorgeous panoramic lift, and the terrace offers a lovely view out over the city.

Love it so much! It’s really fascinating that the whole museum curated with art and Luxembourg development history together, you will never get bored here! I would recommend to anyone that has visited Luxembourg to come here! Very entertaining and educational! Brilliant job!

I've visited this museum several times over the years. It's a modern museum about the history of the city and gives a good snapshot for someone who hasn't visited before. There's a lot to read, which I like, but it might not be suitable for visitors with small children for this reason. It's close to the centre of town and there are lots of cafés and bars nearby, which is convenient. There are lockers inside to store coats and bags, which the staff do make you use- they won't allow you to take in any handbags or even small backpacks. There are a lot of places within the exhibitions to sit if you need to rest, the lighting isn't too bright and the temperature is cool.

  • 5/5 Caro S. 9 months ago on Google
Beautiful museum. The exhibition is larger than what I expected. It was very interesting to learn more about Luxembourg city. We spent about 3 hours in total and could have spent more time there.

  • 5/5 Nhung C. 11 months ago on Google
Luxembourg is a tiny country but its has a definite strength for growth. I didn’t plan to visit the museum, just walked by and got in but it kept me around 2 hours going around. It’s so good to know Luxembourg from a little village gradually growing up in the central Europe yet still managed to keep it its independence and glamour. The museum has cool touches of technology, history, design and souvenirs that you will definitely love it. I got free admission to the museum as I am a student in EU. However, if I have to pay for it, I think it’s still worth the price. This is one of my favorite museum on earth. An additional point is that on the 5th (?) floor, there is a gallery of posters through the year and you can vote for the one you prefer when I came there last January, which is really awesome. Maybe when you come, there will be something interesting to see.

  • 5/5 William M. 11 months ago on Google
Multi level museum with each floor covering a different part of Luxemburg's history or culture. Extremely well designed, the interior is as interesting as its content, not that the content should be ignored! Well designed exhibits pull you round easily, with plenty of information and context. Didn't really know what to expect, but was very pleased to have visited. Highly recommended.

  • 5/5 Sergei G. 1 year ago on Google
I spent almost 2,5 hours there, so much cool and interesting information organised in a nice way with some interactive elements. Definitely worth a visit. And it really brings a better understanding of Luxembourg as a city and a country.

  • 5/5 John F. 1 year ago on Google
A must-see for visitors of the city. As a former archaeologist, I really enjoyed the interactive exhibits on the early history of Luxembourg. I especially love how the building has built upon the older foundation of the building. Throughout the building you can see older masonry walls juxtaposed to modern construction. The museum included exhibits all the up to modern day. It's truly difficult to describe the variety, and I wish I had enough time to view it all. The World War II exhibits were fascinating. My family loved the balcony that overlooked the river valley. Lovely museum. Oh and by visiting this museum, we also received free entry into the nearby art museum, "Villa Vauban - Musée d'Art de la Ville de Luxembourg". It's maybe a 20 minute walk away and worth the visit.

Great museum with the best lift in the world. But seriously, a nice range of historic artefacts. Tells the history and journey of Luxembourg very well. Would recommend going if you like that kind of thing. Was €5 per adult. You need at lease an hour, 90mins to get round. Everything is written in English, German and French. Staff are friendly.

  • 4/5 Paul B. 4 years ago on Google
Luxembourg is a fascinating history and it was great to find out the full story. The layout of the museum is easy to follow and the building is fabulous. The architect has made fantastic use of all the available space on 5 floors. Great fun exploring physically and mentally.

  • 5/5 Kurt B. 1 year ago on Google
Amazing. One is the best museums I've ever seen. There are many floors to visit, each one with lots of different attractions. The lift is made out of glass, it is huge and it passes through stone walls to get you to different floors. It's very nice experience.

  • 5/5 Amano M. 1 year ago on Google
Wonderful museum. Top recommendation if you're looking for somewhere to start in understanding the history of this tiny country. The curation is interactive with a great mix of material heritage, art, technology and clever use of the architecture itself. The views from the museum are great too.

  • 5/5 Chris N. 1 year ago on Google
Great historical overview of the city, was not expecting to be in as long as we were! Just the right level of information without making it too dull. Really liked the temporary exhibition on the 5th floor (100 best posters). It's a great insight into the past (and not too distant past). The huge lift is also cool! Well worth the visit.

(Translated by Google) Interesting place. 😊 A brief history from the founding to the present .... unfortunately the 4th and 5th floors were closed. 😊 The formidable security guard knows his job, but does not interfere with examining the expositions. 😊 The impressions of the opening panorama from the balcony are amazing. 😊 Luxembourg is one of the few places where the 21st century is organically mixed with the Middle Ages. 😊 Well, a few words about the huge "aquarium" Which will move you to the lower floor. 😊 You will pay only 5 € per visit, children are free. 😊 I RECOMMEND. 😊 👍👍

(Translated by Google) To understand the fascinating history of the military fortress that the city of Luxembourg has been since its creation in 963, this museum is a must. Just for its original architecture, an interweaving of houses, and its unique elevator in the world, I recommend its visit. The guided tours bring an undeniable advantage. Very beautiful pieces from all eras. The archives room is worth a detour as are the splendid wooden models representing the city at the various key stages of its history. Très belles pièces de toutes les époques. La salle des archives mérite le détour de même que les splendides maquettes en bois représentant la ville aux différentes étapes clé de son histoire

A super museum in the heart of Luxembourg city which shows the development of the city from its origins to present day. Beautifully renovated, with a central glass elevator which descends through the building into its bedrock and serves as a metaphor for the visitor's travel back through time, each successive floor takes you through the stages of the city's growth. Prices are very reasonable and all displays are in clean working order (February 2021). Wholeheartedly recommended.

The best museum to learn about the history of the city and country. They offer explanations for their pieces in French, German and English. The museum is quite large, consisting of 5 stories. If you don’t have too much time, I’d recommend starting at the beginning (bottom of the museum) and only going up to the 3rd story. The 4th and 5th floors are special exhibits that weren’t too informative in my opinion. The entrance fee is only $5 and the museum kept me entertained for over 3 hours. If you’re in town and want to know about the history, I’d highly recommend.
