Not all tourists in Luzern will put it on their list of things to see. But we believe that it's must. A little bit outside the touristic centre, but it can be reached by foot. It's situated in a quiet area. Highly recommended! If you believe this review is useful, then please 'like' it.

The place is good but it is under maintenance, the monument is covered with scaffolding. The renovation works started in the month of March 23" and the scaffolding will not be opened before July or August 2023. It is 10 to 12 minutes walking from the Luzerne railway station.

This was a beautiful spot. Very peaceful and calm. The lion is much closer to the city than I realised. Be careful not to climb the long sets of stairs. They lead to private homes, not the lion. Keep going past these to get to the lion. Although, a very friendly resident guided me to a park near her home with a great view. So, a happy mistake.

It is recommended to come when the light is at an oblique angle. It can be morning or evening. To better capture the details of the monuments carved into the rocks without being too contrasty. The monuments are very large compared to people. The surrounding area has stories to tell. You should take time to sit and relax and remember the origin of creation and the serenity of the place of the departing lion

The Lion Monument is a truly captivating piece of art that embodies deep emotion and historical significance. Carved into the rock face, this monument depicts a dying lion, a powerful symbol of courage and sacrifice. The intricacy of the sculpture's details, from the texture of the lion's fur to the facial expressions, is simply remarkable. The setting, surrounded by a tranquil pond and lush vegetation, adds to the monument's impact, creating a reflective and solemn atmosphere. Visiting the Lion Monument is an experience that evokes contemplation about the past and pays homage to the fallen soldiers it honors.

A huge sculpture of lion carved from the stone. Although the history is very sad but it is a majestic piece of art work that you see here. A big respect to the people for the memory of whom it was constructed. It is a part of the walking tour that you take with your guide in the city, so you are well informed about the history behind it. Really impressive.

The sculpture on the rock of the cliff of Lion is so beautiful and stunning. The story around is during the French Revolution. The mournful time just invites to the journey back to past. The place has a small pond and WC and very much accessible from public transport or by walk from station The town is pretty small so great to explore it by foot Also there is a glacier museum nearby

It’s easier to get here via public transit. There are paid parking spots nearby but they may be hard to get as there aren’t that many. The park is rather small and can be visited in short time. It’s a nice stop which can be combined with a walk through the surrounding neighborhood. There is no charge to visit the monument.

The Lion Monument, which is nestled in a rocky grotto in a charming park setting, was unveiled in 1821. The dying lion of Lucerne was sculpted from the living rock of the cliff and commemorates the Swiss guardsmen who died in 1792 during the French Revolution.

A beautiful, short little stop to take. Getting to the area of the monument takes almost no time once you’re in the area, and it’s a very short walk. Definitely worth the time to come just take a look and enjoy the atmosphere. The story behind it is pretty interesting as well.

Only a short walk away from the station, it's well maintained and gives an insight into the history and background of the place. There are benches where you can sit and relax and reflect. No fees for entry and it was not crowded when I visited. Please do read the plaque which is at the left hand side corner which gives the historical background

The Lion Monument or the Lion of Lucerne is designed by Bertel Thorvaldsen in 1820. It commemorates the Swiss Guards who were massacred during the French Revolution in 1792. There's no ticket required to access it.

Lion Monument in Lucern, one of the touristic attractions inside the city. Carved a dying lion on the rock portrayed the symbol of Love and Courage. Entry is free. Many story behind this as one is commemorating swiss soldiers for their loyalty and sacrifice to the King. Noticed that many are throwing the coins to the pond for their good sake. A place to sit and relax and a walkable distance from the city center.

Beautiful historic sculpture inside the rock, created 1820-1821, in the middle of the city of Lucerne. It represents the fallen soldiers of the Swiss guard, standing by Louis XVI, during La Révolution in France.

It's a Lion sculpture. Or is it? You can feel the pain in the sculpture. The area around it is nice. You have a lot of shade, links to information. When we went they were working below so maybe we did not get the full effect. Still cool.

The Lion Monument (Lowendenlmal) is next to the Glacier Garden (Gleitschergarten) in Lucerne, Switzerland, located in a former sandstone quarry. The dying lion is a rock relief, hewn out of cliff face. It monument measures ten metres in length and six metres in height. The body of the lion is transfixed by a spear, covering a shield bearing the lily symbol of the French monarchy; beside him is another shield bearing the coat of arms of Switzerland. The monument commemorates the fallen Swiss guardsmen who died in 1792 during the French Revolution. The inscription above the lion Helvetiorum Fidei ac Virtuti means "To the loyalty and bravery of the Swiss".

Unfortunately the lion and pond are under maintenance right now (17/05/2023), but the English garden is still pretty to look at and a nice reprieve from the surrounding city. The boards nearby have a qr code for a website that provides lots of information about the history of the site that you can read while sitting on some benches.

We enjoyed visiting the Lion Monument in Luzern - we got off the bus stop before Lowenplatz and walked about five-seven minutes. Got some really nice photos with the sleeping lion in the background. There is a lot of historical context associated with this attraction. I recommend taking a visit as it is free to see and take photos of.

The Lion Monument is a moving and powerful tribute to the Swiss Guards who were massacred in 1792 during the French Revolution. The monument is carved into the sandstone cliff and depicts a dying lion, its paw resting on a shield with the words "Helvetia" and "Morituri te Salutant" (Those who are about to die salute you). The monument is located in a park near the Chapel Bridge and is a short walk from the city center. Admission is free and the monument is open 24 hours a day.

Beautiful. Serene. Quiet. Much larger in person. A necessary stop when in Lucerne. Car park across the street near the Coop. Lots of small cafes located near it. Nice educational signs offered in English. Free to get in.

Arrived on a rainy summer morning around 10am and it was already pretty crowded. Parked at the Coop shopping center and walked there, but almost everything in Switzerland is accessible by train and bus. The lion is behind the businesses and catches you by surprise once you find it.

Simply stunning piece of art or monument. It’s very simple, and yet could portray a lot of meaning and history. We visited during the fall, and the surrounding trees and leaves just made it all the more beautiful!

I love how beautiful this place is and for sure there is a sad story behind it but this memorial is full of emotion. It completely shows the pain of war. Make sure you give yourself time to sit for a minute there. Best visited before or after hours with no so many people, in any case people amount changes minute to minute. There are bathrooms there, benches to sit and it’s a beautiful place in whole.

The Lion Monument was one of the most detailed pieces of rock I've ever seen. It was definitely very moving and sad, yet beautiful at the same time. I learned upon visiting, how prestigious the Swiss Mercenaries/Guards were in those times and continue to serve at The Vatican. This monument is a must visit if you are in Luzern.

It's just a lion carved into the rock on a cliff beside a small lake, so don't expect too much except taking photos while visiting this place. The story behind the carving is definitely interesting, though you would not spend more than 30 minutes here tops, unless you plan to just sit on the nearby benches and stare at the waters or lion. I recommend you pair your visit here with a tour to the nearby Alpine Museum, Panoramic Museum and the Glacier Garden as well to make full use of your time here, as all of the attractions are within walking distance. There's also a public toilet here if you're looking for one.

We were going through the centre of Luzern one day evening. And it was magical. Some parts of town has fairy-tale atmosphere, like these on the pics. On the first one is statue, on the second one toilets next to the statue and on the last one is café situated just in front of the statue area. I wish everyone enjoy the attractive place.

(Translated by Google) This monument, designed by the Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen, commemorates the Swiss guardsmen in the service of Louis XVI of France. They were massacred, defending him in 1792 during the French Revolution. The monument was carved out of a huge rock, in a quiet park away from the noisy street. The sight of a wounded lion is heartbreaking. This feeling was accurately expressed by Mark Twain, who wrote that it is the saddest and most touching stone in the world. Standing there, it's hard to take your eyes off him. (Original) Pomnik ten, zaprojektowany przez duńskiego rzeźbiarza Bertela Thorvaldsena upamiętnia szwajcarskich gwardzistów, będących na służbie króla Francji Ludwika XVI. Zostali oni zmasakrowani, stając w jego obronie w 1792 r. w czasie Rewolucji Francuskiej. Pomnik wykuto w ogromnej skale, w zacisznym parku oddalonym od hałaśliwej ulicy. Widok zranionego lwa rozdziera serce. Uczucie to celnie wyraził Mark Twain, pisząc że jest to najsmutniejszy i najbardziej wzruszający kamień świata. Stojąc tam, trudno oderwać od niego wzrok.

I was pleasantly surprised. It was quite easy to get to by foot after having travelled by car. There are a number of parking garages nearby, literally less than a minutes walk. The monument is above a small pond, which is located in a nice reasonably sized park, ostensibly made specifically for viewing the lion. The lion is some distance from the viewer (probably a good thing) but is quite large and extremely detailed (almost as if it were a carving by Albrecht Durer). I visited during Switzerlands 2nd lockdown so there was absolutely no crowd... in fact almost nobody was there. Although, I could imagine it getting quite crowded during high season, sans lockdown. If you are ever in or around Luzern the lion (as well as the Kapellbrücke, and lake, which are both not far off) are well worth the visit.

However, it has reservations about the things it commemorates, to commemorate the hundreds of Swiss mercenaries who sacrificed to defend Louis XVI at the Palais Royal in Paris during the French Revolution. It can be seen that this place is not rich in history and culture, only the natural scenery is worth seeing (Original)
