If you want to glimpse another side of Tokyo, a visit here is highly recommended. It is the second-oldest temple in Tokyo (733!), and the center of a complex of religious sites around springs that emerge from the topography of the area. The streets leading up to the temple area are lively with restaurants and sweets and souvenir shops. Soba noodles are the area specialty. There are also two botanical gardens, a hot spring, and a castle mound in the immediate surroundings. Different seasons bring different events and natural beauty, but the rainy season of June/July and the autumn leaves in November/December are particularly atmospheric times to visit.

a rainy Monday , visited the historical Jindaiji Temple. It was said that the temple was erected in 733. The main entrance was built in 1695 , it has stood there for 300 years . It is the oldest surviving structure in the temple, as all other buildings burned down in 1865. The famous Statue of Hakuhoh Buddha (592-710 Asuka period) is a National Treasure now. A beautiful place that is full of history ! Will go there again , love the peacefulness there !

We were able to visit a few weekends ago during the festival, and I have never seen so many brand new darumas in one place! We picked up a very cute new Fatima that had cherry blossoms on it. The shrine will be even more beautiful when the cherry trees in the area are blooming. The food stalls around the shrine offer lots of variety of your traditional foods. We are always suckers for snacks!

What a beautiful temple. I had an absolutely amazing time here today. A very kind and extremely generous Japanese man gave us a free, full on tour explaining the history as we went, all out of the goodness of his heart. It brought so much color and depth to the experience. What a blessing. If anyone of you are ever interested in reading up on the history, read the book he published! You will not regret it! I wonder if the botanical garden was the site of a temple?

Jindaiji Temple is one of the biggest temple within Tokyo and more importantly the street of famous Japanese cartoon character "GeGeGe no Kitarō" is just around the corner. The place is a perfect match of tradition and Japan cartoon, not talking about the beautiful red maple leaves during early winter time. After workshipping the temple tourists must try the characteristic dessert in the "GeGeGe no Kitarō" street. It is highly recommended.

We had a great time! We came for the Jindaiji Daruma festival on March 3rd and enjoyed our time. During the festival, the grounds are full of stores selling Daruma statues and the streets around are full of food stalls. You can try lots of street food and sweets and also buy spices, pickles, fruits etc, as well as souvenirs.

Lovely Buddhist Temple in the suburbs of Tokyo. Surrounding shops gives it a small town from the past feel. Displays an ancient statue which is classified as a treasure. No fees or tickets required to visit the temples. If arriving by car, there are some noodle shops nearby which have parking and if you pay an additional 200 yen, you can leave your car for the duration of your visit.

A beautiful temple next to a wonderful botanical garden and dog run. There are traditional streets sellers making delicious soba noodles, manju and dango. There are also pottery workshops available. Once a month, on the 17th, it’s possible to have a special goshuin that protects from illnesses and wards off evil.

This is like a tiny old town hidden away in Tokyo. There are so many soba shops and traditional snack vendors. The temple is nice but it’s the little town street that I love. And the botanical gardens just behind are very lovely. Even off season! Just note though there is no nearby subway stop. It’s accessible by bus or a 30 min walk from Chofu station.

A beautiful temple with a very romantic fundation story. If you are in tokyo is completely worthy to take the time to come and visit. The gardens and the atmosphere where lovely. We took the train and then a bus, the bus driver was very polite, kind and helpfull. The soba soup and noodles were perfect.

Beautiful temple compound, and great for bicycle trips as well in the Chofu area. This is apparently the second oldest temple in Tokyo after Asakusa’s Sensoji. There are a lot of soba restaurants around and souvenir shops. We actually painted our own coffee mug in a pottery workshop offered right next to the temple. It’s a great day trip from Tokyo and the area can be mistaken easily for one of Kyoto’s temple areas.

The area around the temple is great for a stroll, taking photos, and eating traditional snacks and soba noodles. It feels like you are walking around in old Edo.

The atmosphere was great and I thoroughly enjoyed my visit! Because Daruma was famous and because it was the origin of omikuji, it seems that it contains about 30% more bad luck than regular omikuji! The Daruma fortune was a black Daruma! Pray for surplus! ! I did it!

I went to Daruma Market again this year, and I can't help but feel like it's getting more and more crowded every year. It's a shame that the store openings have become expensive and tasteless.

Solemn and dignified, yet soft and warm atmosphere The approach to the shrine is lively and reminiscent of good old Japan.

Kitaro Chaya near the approach was crowded. I have been here several times, but this was the first time I learned that the original main hall is in a different location and that it is a matchmaking temple. The soba noodles were also delicious. I'll come back when the Nanjamonja flowers bloom.

Very pretty and quiet. Stalls too, with cheap, really good food 👍

Histrical temple. Very beautiful and nice atmosohere. Many traditional Japanese tea cafes and long established soba noodle restaurants around this temple.

We went to visit the gardens and didn’t spent much time here, but the fall colours and setting are very nice. Certainly worth a (possibly longer) visit.

Japanese Soba Noodles & Beautiful Temple An extremely beautiful temple area with lovely natural sights and the biggest carps I have seen so far in Japan! This place really is a hidden gem a bit further off the central regions of Tokyo. There are many Japanese soba restraunts or shops in the park. Next to the tample, there is a botanical garden, and is is also good. Especially visiting in autum season such as late November is recommended to see autum leaves.

It was a great experience not only for visiting temples but also for soba lovers! Good for a relaxing short trip.

The temple in itself is nothing really special, but the area around it is very serene, and great for a stroll, especially combined with the nearby botanical gardens.
