Perfect place to appreciate the thousands of species of butterflies in different stages of life. Literally 15-20min walk from town each way. Be careful with insect repellent as this affects the butterflies too.

This butterfly garden is relatively small and there's an entry fee. It's totally worth it though because the money is used to support an important project to raise butterflies which aren't just beautiful but critical for the flora. At first you are shown different butterflies as eggs, larvae and then their cocoons. You can even touch them carefully. You'll see cocoons that look just like jewelry. After this you walk around in an enclosure and can see some beautiful adult butterflies. It's a challenge to take photos especially of the blue ones.

The place is very beautiful, you learn a lot, you have a very friendly and intelligent guide. The road to get there is beautiful and calm, I recommend that you take a lot of water with you. The cost is cheap and you get an unforgettable experience. they will show you all the stages of a butterfly from a microscopic level.

This place is a butterfly garden and study laboratory. Even tho is small, the researchers do a really good job explaining how butterflies live and how they reproduce , also the have a frugal but well set laboratory where you can see in a microscope butterflies eggs etc. The room has some shelfs full of caterpillars and butterflies cocoons where researchers will explain to you the difference among them. Please skip the bad reviews that apparently are done by people who think Machupichu is Disneyland

About 1km down the road to Machu Picchu from Machu Picchu Pueblo is the small butterfly station. For S/5 you can view the butterflies and song colorful birds and get a small science tour into the life of a butterfly. If you're looking for something to do in the area besides Machu Picchu this is a good hour or more spent - including the walk.

Definitely worth a visit on the way from or to Machu Picchu! Not only do you get a chance to see beautiful butterflies (and hummingbirds if you're lucky! ) and see all stages of their life cycle but also support helping species endangered by human pollution - they breed and release butterflies into the wild to try to maintain a healthy population. Well worth the 20 sol!

Very cordial staff, which has reported in a 20-minute tour, in detail about the research and the projects. In addition, one gets butterflies in all designs presented. Highly recommended if there is some time. The entrance fee including English guide is 20 SOL.

Loved the experience. Sanctuary helping butterfly species avoid extinction due to all the tourism (gas, etc) around. An employee showed us around - microscopes, eggs, we even released a butterfly ourselves. Overall good experience

Really cool little place. It's not too big and the tour itself isn't very long, but it's pretty, butterflies are well kept, and you will have a fun time regardless. Not sure if there's English tours available but our Spanish guide was super knowledgeable and kind. Worth checking out of you're waiting to go to Machupicchu and are trying to find things to do around Aguas Calientes!

The research they are conducting here is impressive. The short tour is educational. The lab and butterfly areas are both open to the public. Though the walk to/from downtown is dusty with frequent bus and van traffic from Machu Picchu, it is a nice little segue from downtown. Consider supporting this eco-conscious endeavor.

Only 5 min walk from Aguas Calientes city, and this place is must visit. 20 soles only for a pleasure to see and learn something new. We been really impressed with enthusiasm of these people, only the best experience and impressions.

Absolutely worth the visit. Learned so much about the endangerment of the butterflies in Peru and what they’re working on to protect them.

The Mariposario of Machu Picchu was a great experience and tour. The tour was enjoyable and filled with information. Everything was explained in a very scientific manner as the Butterfly House also serves as a butterfly research and conservation facility. You will need to purchase a ticket for the tour. Ticket purchases can be made on site. We paid in Soles. One of the very few locations in Peru where we used cash.

The best thing about visiting this place was the exercise, because it is not close. There weren't many butterflies. It seems like they don't spend time planting plants, there are only dry branches. Butterflies don't have any food. They didn't give me a ticket when I paid for my ticket. The toilets did not have soap or paper.

I really enjoyed this place, it's a research center and they have a lot of information about the types of butterflies and their chrysalises and cocoons from the Machu Picchu area. If you have been to butterfly gardens in the US or the UK you might be disappointed they don't have nearly as many butterflies as the showier butterfly houses and if you like research you will love it here!
