Totally unprofessional. They practice overbooking. Full story down below: I had booked a shared room more than two weeks before my stay. They told me there weren't any beds available the very same day I was travelling to Madrid (and only because I had just asked them if they provided with sheets and towels). Otherwise, I guess I would have been informed in the hostel itself. Then, they offered me a single room in another hotel. I accepted the offer, only to be told that there weren't any beds available either. They lied. I called the hotel THEY suggested to me and it did have rooms available (800 euros/4 nights). I exposed them. They apologized and said it was too expensive (bear in mind they are a big company with hotels in +10 destinations). They kept insisting in giving me a full refund + 50% of the cost (~ 150€). I insisted in them finding and paying for an alternative accommodation, no matter the cost, as it was their malpractice/negligence. Their excuse: it was a mistake which we couldn't have prevented. Finally, I decided to threat them by saying I would take this case to OCU, FACUA and court if necessary, as all they were offering me at that time was 150€ and no place to stay. They found the new accommodation at 22:43, 10 minutes before I arrived at Madrid. It took them 5 hours to find another accommodation for me, 5 hours I had to be calling, messaging and stressing about something I had organized more than 2 weeks ago. Obviously, I wouldn't recommend.

The customer service is terrible and the amenities are a joke. They have a bar and restaurant listed, but they weren't actually open. They did have a rooftop, but it was only open some of the time. The music from the rooftop was incredibly loud and could be heard in our room, so not exactly restful. Its not open in the morning, so forget enjoying it early. They claim to have hot tubs but they are only open in the middle of the day (in +27C weather) and only if they can manage to figure out the pH. So, they make them essentially unusable as well. They 'have AC' but its not effective. I booked for all the amenities which were literally not usable. The room, aside from the music, was decent and the location was good. That is literally the only positive thing I have to say about this location. I can't imagine I would ever want to stay in another Generator facility. They're all hype and no substance. My money would have been better spent at any other hostel or hotel. I booked for the amenities and was royally ripped off. Save your money and find a better location.

My recent stay at Generator Madrid was nothing short of a nightmare - a big contrast to the positive hostel experiences I've had in the past. From the moment I arrived, I was met with disappointment and a complete lack of regard for guest safety and well-being. Upon arriving before the check-in time, I inquired about an early check-in and the availability of my room. The staff informed me that my room wasn't ready and suggested I secure my luggage in a locker. However, there were no suitable lockers available, so I requested assistance in securing my belongings. To my surprise, they suddenly informed me that my room was ready, contradicting their initial statement. When I entered my dormitory, I was confronted by a man who clearly did not look like a guest and was under the influence of drugs. His skin bore blisters, his clothes were heavily stained, and he had no luggage. He was in a highly altered state, mumbling incoherent words. The room had an overpowering, unpleasant odor, and it was evident the cleaning staff had neglected their duties, leaving the room in an unacceptable state. Feeling extremely unsafe and concerned, I promptly informed the reception about this distressing encounter. To my disbelief, the staff at the reception dismissed my concerns, claiming they couldn't control who stayed in the hostel. This response was unacceptable and deeply concerning, especially when considering the safety of guests. Their lack of acknowledgment, let alone an apology, was beyond disappointing. Fearing for my safety, I opted for a private room at my own expense. Despite this inconvenience and the distressing encounter, I received no compensation or gesture of goodwill for the ordeal I endured. This experience was unprecedented and has left me questioning the integrity and safety measures of Generator Madrid. I strongly caution anyone considering a stay at this hostel. Your safety and peace of mind should never be compromised during a trip, and unfortunately, Generator Madrid failed to provide even the most basic level of security and cleanliness.

I only visited friends, but didn't stay there myself. They thought it was a great value. Rooms were small, but clean and modern. The roof bar wasn't open for business, but we sat up there and brought our own.

Stayed here for 2 nights! It is in a very nice modern building few steps away from Gran Vía. The room is also very modern and clean, big windows and comfy bed. Staff are friendly and helpful.

Visited this hostel back in July, and the air conditioning was not working during the peak of summer in Spain. They pretended as it was not an issue at all. However, the hotel and common room were great. They boosted the stars to three.

I made a mistake when booking and realised at check in. I was quoted a price to upgrade that was more than double the price difference online with both the property direct and expedia/hotels.com. I booked the better room on expedia and asked to cancel the old booking. They wouldn't cancel it even though i was stood in the reception of the property with duplicate bookings! Expedia contacted the property to cancel it, they would not cancel it. I raised a complaint, they would not cancel it. I asked for the issue to be escalated to management, they never got back to me. A little context, I have been travelling over a year now and have spent close to 400 nights in hotels and hostels and this is the WORST customer service i have encountered during my time in 12 different countries..

Amazing place in the center of Madrid. There are a lot of restaurants and pubs around. Excellent public transportation network around the property allows you to explore Madrid with ease. Unfortunately, I was not able to enjoy the charms of the rooftop terrace because I came in the off-season. I will definitely come back here to check out the vibe during the season.

The hotel equivalent of EasyJet--there are so many rules and they really nickel-and-dime you. Really feels like you're staying at a cost-cutting corporate, not a hostel that's providing a human, albeit low-cost, experience. They ban outside food, but the restaurant was closed. The rooftop is nice, but they value outside visitors more than hostel guests. Rooms are admittedly clean, but very spare, without a closet or fridge or many surfaces to spread out on (I stayed in a private room). There are hotels nearby for not much more. I can see the appeal in more expensive cities, but in Madrid right now the value for money is limited.

I already knew where I was going, but when I arrived I already perceived THE PROBLEMS. I arrived at night and they only had one poor guy working and a large number of people in line and out on the street. When I got to the room, it was impossible to put my things, the beds are very noisy because they are made of iron, and obviously the mattress is for going to the physiotherapist after breakfast. It's insane that 8 people live together in a tiny room, perhaps I was unlucky, but everyone came drunk, made noise and turned on the lights at night, it seems that the company is not aware of explaining the room rules to the customers, they simply say "sign here". Towel rental for 5 euros, paying 33 euros per night, the scam of the century. 33 euros per night could be the price of a 2-star hotel, but not of a hostel that has... 300 beds? One aspect that I did not like is that they don't have a community kitchen. You perfectly hear the noises of the people who sleep on the floor above you (screams, jumps, shower, taps, metal drawers...). The location of the hostel at night is very insecure, with a lot of drunk people yelling on the street. If you have another option to stay, DON'T HESITATE.

Rooms no problem. Location is great and central. But the service is dismal. I was a participant in a fairly large group and we were treated like we are an annoyance. If you can’t cater for groups, then don’t accept them. Breakfast for other guests was much better. Staff was not particularly pleasant. (Why the hell do we need loud music at breakfast? Can we get a bit of quiet?)

Just like staying at Generator Barcelona and Amsterdam earlier , I had a great experience at Generator Madrid . Reception staff is friendly and welcoming! The rooms are clean and well maintained and location is very central to all the tourist spots. During my trip I needed to drink warm water and I wanted to highlight some exceptional service from Queenie, Rena and Rachel at the Bar / restaurant who kindly ensured that they filled my bottle with warm water no matter how many times I needed it in the day. On top of that once I needed some ‘Halls’ for my throat and it was late at night and quite cold outside to go to pharmacy so Maria at the reception provided me her ‘Halls’ tablets instead. I’m so grateful to such kind and generous attitude of Generator Madrid staff who always thought ‘what more could they do’ and made my stay so comfortable . Thank you and I can’t wait to visit you again. 😊

Very conveniently located hostel. We booked a private room for 2 people and were even able to check in before 14:00, since a room happened to be vacant, which was really nice of the staff. The cleanliness of the room was very good. I slept well every night, although it was right next to the lifts. We don't like to sleep with the AC running and asked the reception to turn it off, which was no problem at all. I wasn't super impressed with the view of the rooftop bar, but since Madrid has plenty of those I don't think it's a big deal. I recommend a stay here, the price is also very fair considering the location

Located in the Center of Madrid close to Gan Via the hostel is very well situated. Rooms are quite comfortable but not as comfy as their other site in Barcelona where I also stayed. Staff is very professional and helpful I put 3 stars for two main reasons: First - in my room there was a person who forgot that check-out was until 10 am at 10:30 a staff member came in the room but was so noisy she awake the entire room. Maybe a more discreet way should be better and this show also respect to the person who was late the poor guy simply forgot the check.out time. Second - the thing there is no kitchen at the hostel, the restaurant is ok but sometimes you also want to spare your budget and a kitchen is very helpful. For the rest everything was perfect

We had a Sports Experience Camp in Madrid with over 100 people staying at the Hostel. Ambience at the hostel along with the interior work was very nice . Gave all a feel of a nice hostel. Great and trusted staff to be at service for our players. Location was great which gave access to all basic needs. The Hostel have a great rooftop and fun events throughout the week. Amalia, one of the staff, was really helpful and resolved any issues that we had. Maria, in Reception and operations, was also very helpful and always providing quick solutions. Looking forward for more fun experiences at th Generator. Highly recommended.

I stayed for a short time and it was great. Their front desk guy was beyond helpful and gave me local tips for my short visit to a local friend. It was modern, very clean, and the location was totally walkable to the main attractions of Madrid. The jetted tub in the terrance is out of service, so ask before going if it's working. I recommend it.

Bad experience, would not go back and don’t recommend. 1. The rooftop (which is the main asset of this place) is closed (March 19th 2023) and they don’t mention it before you book your stay. 2. There is literally no intimacy in the shared rooms. No curtains on the bunk beds, the bathroom, shower and sink are directly in the room. Only other 1 shower available outside the room. So if you have to brush your teeth early in the morning or late at night when some people are sleeping, you wake everybody up. 3. The hand soap was broken in our room, so no other way you can wash your hands because there is just 1 sink. I asked to repair it, and they didn’t. At the end, we had soap on the floor because the machine was broken. Also no air in the room and it was stinky. 4. Not really a hostel, no opportunities to meet people. And the staff was not very friendly.

Incredible experience at Generator Hostel Madrid! Great atmosphere right in the city centre of the Spanish capital. Clean rooms and really polite staff. Special mention to Amalia and her restaurant colleagues, who excellently treated our football team and took care of all our needs.

Good value for money for travellers who are on a budget. Clean, and close to city center. I find their bfast buffet affordable for what they serve/offer. Shout out to these staff for going out their way in making my stay memorable- Queenie, Rushyl and Norby.

Hi, I stayed here for 3 days and 2 nights. The staff was outstanding. I came from California and I was confused how to get around Madrid and Rushyl and Rena helped me and gave me advice how to safely get around Madrid. Not to mention the places they recommended me to go was immaculate! I wish I can stay here longer but this will be my hostel to stay when I come back here to Madrid. They also have dj on the weekends. I hope you enjoy! update: I sat down to order a meal, which is scrambled eggs and I was expecting not much at all for scrambled eggs. but when it came to my table, it was properly elegant cooked and put and the meal was amazing! I was eager to find the cook who had made it. The name is Norby. I think that the way he put his effort in to food doesn’t lack anything. I also met this friendly worker and she was helpful with everything I needed, asking me if I’m satisfied with well being. Amalia is a nice and friendly worker and I wish I could’ve met her long before on my first stay. Thank you for reading this!

The service I received from the staff and the sheer quality of the amenities provided makes this the perfect Hostel. In particular I would like to reference Renalyn & Rushyl Who served me breakfast every morning and made the beginning of my day so much better because of the service! In addition I would like to reference the amazing service I received from the front desk staff with him there are too many to name

The negative sides were that the beds in dorms didn’t have curtains and the lack of bathroom’s. Only one bathroom and toilet per dorm and no common bathrooms on the floor. Also no common kitchen and own drinks and foods weren’t allowed. Otherwise very clean and nice hostel in general in perfect location and nice staff.

We stayed at the hostel for three nights from the 16th of June. It is centrally located with access to multiple public transportation means. And staff were nice (I am sure they had to deal with a lot of complaints regarding the ac). However, I would not recommend this place to anyone for the following reasons. First and foremost, the AC was broken for the entire of our stay with the heat wave. When we checked in, we simply thought it was weak so spent the first night sweating in a room with a window that faces other sides of the building or buildings which doesn’t fully open. The following day, we complained about the AC in the room. Only then, a staff explained that it was broken and “being fixed”. We were told that a fan will be available when we return to the hostel. However, when we asked upon our return from exploring the city, no fan was available for us. If it was made clear to us that they do not have a functioning AC, we would have found an alternative option on our arrival. Sleeping in a hot, humid, stuffy room was the absolute worst part of the trip. I understand that things broke down and sometimes don’t work properly. But it is a duty of service/accommodation provider to inform its customers of that. In this case, no one informed us when we checked in. Second, parts of the hostel seem often inaccessible due to private events. We wanted to check out the rooftop on Saturday but it was closed for an event as well as the bar on ground 0 including the restroom. Depending on your travel dates, you won’t get to enjoy all the features it advertises on the website. Last, someone took the door hanger sign on the first stay. So I asked for another which the staff confirmed that it would be on the door later. It didn’t get replaced which meant no housekeeping nor clean towels in the room on the third day. The hostel needs to be better managed and be up front about any issues that might affect customers stay and try to provide a solution.

Nice place overall. Clean and quite new facilities. Only big downside was that the rooftop bar and jacuzzis were closed and this info was not on the app when we booked. Not much of a hostel vibe.

An excellent, centrally located hostel with super friendly staff. Spontaneously booked three nights for 41 € in off-season in a four-bed mix room. Staff was very friendly, hostel is wheelchair accessible, you can walk to the city center in 10 minutes, the room and shower was clean, AC worked and curtains blocked the light, not too noisy and room mates were rather quiet, super cool rooftop bar with a jacuzzi which opens during the day. Amazing value for money when you just need a place to sleep and you are anyways strolling around the city during the day.

Crapiest and most unsafe experience imaginable. It is unsafe here. We thought the location was great and we booked here. Within 5 minutes of entering our laptops and bag was stolen. Even though there is a camera they refuse to give us access to it. The people at reception as so casual about it as they say it happens all the time! In that case shouldn’t they have signs saying so?? I met another guest whose phones were stolen last night from the restaurant table. And another who said two days back something else got stolen. Ridiculous

We really enjoyed our stay here. Felt more like a hotel than a hostel. It's designed for youth people. Liked the modern decoration and fun activities they had for hosts. Enjoyed the jacuzzi in the top terrace.

The location of the hostel is perfect for discovering what Madrid has to offer. We had a private room and we had a great experience. The staff were all very nice and we have to mention the help received from the receptionist as well as Queenie and Renalyn whom all were so friendly to us.

The only good thing about this hostel is it’s location. Other than that, the dormitory isn’t comfortable and the service is horrible. After 13hours traveling I arrive late to check in. Already paid in advanced for a 4 bedroom dormitory. They give me one with an upper bed, I requested a bottom bed but I’ve been told to check in for that tomorrow morning. Fair. I go into the dorm and there was only one man at the time, I went into the bathroom, the toilet seat had pubic hear on it and multiple dry poop stains. I clean and sanitize the toilet seat myself. The room they gave me was TINY. And by that I mean only 2 feet between both of beds, so one person can pass at a time. If someone pulls the box beneath the bed nobody can pass. The bathroom door opens right in front of the entrance door, so they clash. It’s that narrow if someone opens any door it just blocks the entire walking space. It’s possibly one of the tiniest room they have. The shower light has a sensor, it turns off every 5 minutes when the door is closed (of course I’ll close it as I shower) and if I moved inside the shower it doesn’t turn on again. Idk if the sensor is weak but it gave me a hard time as I was shampooing my hair, I had to yell so the guy in the room hears me, he opened the door just a little bit then closed it so the light can switch on again. It was a humiliating experience. I finally go to bed but the pillows are too thin that you’re basically sleeping on just the mattress. I woke up 5-6 times due to neck pain. I went in the morning to request a room change and I also told them about the pillow. The receptionist said “yeah I know the pillows are thin but it’s all what we have”. They didn’t even give me another one, they did nothing. I go again to gather my items cause I need to check out soon, so I can check in the new room for the lower bed after 4 hours (at 2pm). When I arrived into the room, there was a technician trying to fix some storage box. The room is already tiny and now is packed with 4 people. There is literally no space to move, it was difficult just even move in the room. Due to that, I took 20m to check out instead of 10. The minute when finally everyone was out of the room and I can just process very smoothly, they send someone to “remind me” to check out. He spoke very rudely. Later when I came to check in again, the receptionist was rude in the way she spoke to repeat the note on “checking out on time”. I tried explaining to her the situation but she gave me a deaf ear, interrupted me and her literal words were: “this is a hostel, and the technician isn’t an excuse”. Her way of saying it was rude, dry, and felt like a kick out. The receptionist has long dark hair. Yeah of course darling the technician isn’t an excuse, it’s not about him, it’s about literally we’re packed in a cell that we cannot move and everyone is suffering to manage their business at the same time! Being late a little bit due to the extreme discomfort of this situation is expected. I check in the new room of 4 which btw was spacious enough for all 4 people to manage their business at the same time. If I was given this room to begin with I wouldn’t have issues to check out. There is like 6 feet between the bed. It’s slightly a better room but the issues with the doors remain. I came to Generator Madrid cause my experience with Generator Berlin was good, but this one was legit horrible. I do not recommend, there are other hostels in the city center that a few Euros more expensive and I do wish if I paid for them. The photo attached is the new room, the old one was half the size.

I‘ve stayed here for over a month and have only positive things to say. The rooms are very clean and the rooftop is perfect to relax after a stressful day. The service in the lounge downstairs is very good as well. I‘ve felt instantly welcomed especially by amalia. She is a very service oriented and super funny and kind person. I‘ve really enjoyed my mornings and the little talks with her. I would without a doubt recommend staying in this hostel. Also the reception personell was always friendly and very good informed if you needed any kind of help

Situated in a great central location. Fairly clean. No towels (good that I always carry one with me). Breakfast was a disappointment. Overall, good value for money, but felt too industrial, too business-like. Was lacking the warm and friendliness of a usual hostel.

Great location and they clean the rooms/bathrooms everyday! Right next to the Grand Via. Luiz was amazing too!! Every time we had questions, he was great with advice and directions. Not huge night life hostel but in a good area to have it be the best of both worlds.

Loved this spot. I'd give it 4.5 stars of I could though. The only downside is my wife and I received bunk beds. Not exactly the most romantic while celebrating our honeymoon 🤣, but it makes for a memorable story at least. Also, there isn't any sort of ventilation, which made our room very humid and warm. We tried leaving the window open, but the traffic outside from both cars and rowdy pedestrians kept us from leaving it open very long. Aside from that, the Generator was located at a wonderful location in Madrid. Everything was very close by. The staff was also very helpful and friendly. I especially recommend stopping by the bar and speaking to Victor. He provided us with some wonderful dining recommendations.

I checked in late last Wednesday night, around 1:00am and the lady at reception was nice. When I walked in the shared room, it was quite cold and I couldn't find the AC control anywhere so I just went to bed as it was late. I woke up at 3am freezing, I went downstairs to reception and the same 'nice' lady was YELLING at me the moment I came into her view from afar, "WHERE'S YOUR MASK! GO TO YOUR ROOM NOW AND GET YOUR MASK!!!". Yes, I forgot my mask and it was locked in my locker, under the bed and I didn't want to go back and wake my roomates up, especially when I just needed to explain my situation for 5 seconds...so I stood even further back from the lady and tried to explain this but she continued cutting me off and was continuing to demand very aggressively to get my mask. I then put half my face in my shirt (the equivalent of wearing a mask) for protection and for the hopes that she would calm down, but she wouldn't even let me speak!! I finally just told her the AC was too cold and kindly asked to turn it down. She was so extremely unprofessional and I was in shock that she treated me like that. Unbelievable behavior and definitely put a sour perception for the remainder of my stay. All the other staff were however great throughout my stay and the hotel was very clean. Overall though, I would not come back considering my experience.

Our stay at Generator Madrid has been amazing! The location is the best, all important touristic attractions are walking distance. The room was very clean, modern and with all amenities included. We want to give a special thanks to Bruno, from the front desk!! Bruno has treated us really nice, polite and quick. He explained all the info we needed to know with kindness & patience. Thank yo for all! We would definitely come back again!

Great upmarket hostel. Perfect location. Ton of food and drinks places around the corner. Very nice double rooms. Clean and if there's a room issue it's attended to asap. Breakfast is perfect and much better than most other trendy hostels elsewhere in Europe and you can get cooked breakfast with a small supplemental cost. Queenie, the breakfast & restaurant manager is the best and will help out with needs in any which way possible.

Really well organized & the stuff is super friendly. Fran has a huge understanding for the costumers needed and super relaxed person. Amalia was such a friendly and charismatic worker. She knows, how to welcoming people and make them feel good in the ambience. She was the only waitress in the restaurant, when I came with my friends and she managed everything perfectly. Timing, orders, requests on point. Maybe some people don't see those things, but for me was a great job. 👌

I stayed there in 2018 for a few nights. Nice hostel with nice people and facilities. Oh, the location as well! Within walking distance from Plaza de España metro station (just in case you travel with the train from the airport). From many shopping areas, eating places and hop on hop off bus stops also. I like the rooftop with the bar. Drinking, chilling, smoking... Simply superb!

Amazing hostel with a very cool vibe and vibrant life. Lots of young people and places to hang if you’re into that. The decor has some really nice and fun touches to it. The location is amazing, just next to Gran Via and with a loooot of restaurants, shops and metro stop nearby. The reception is always available to assist you with anything and the staff is super friendly. The double bed room was really spacious and comfortable, and even tho there was a lot of people staying at the hostel it was silent in the room.

Nice place but didn’t give me the real ‘hostel’ experience. Felt more like a hotel.. not a lot of that typical hostel atmosphere. The rooftop terrace is really beautiful, rooms were clean. I had a 4 bedroom mixed which even had a shower. Although I did miss a kitchen and refrigerators to be able to cook a bit myself as to not have to spend money for every meal. A friend of mine also had to pay a big sum just to store his luggage for 3 hours before we could check in, which is insane..

Good things - clean rooms and bathrooms, kind front desk staff, amazing location! Not so great things - staff aren't keen on allowing outside food in and there is no kitchen area, no great lounge or working area, rooftop bar closes rather early and doesn't have consistent hours, rooms are hot (even after asking for the AC to be turned up). Also - there were multiple large groups of high school/middle school age children often hanging around the reception and roof (quite annoying and weird vibe for a hostel).

Very good hostel, in an amazing location with an impressive rooftop bar (for a hostel). The aircon in our room didn't turn on, however we were fortunately always in the shade so we managed. We were waiting for the rooftop bar to open at 6 and rudely told to come back at 6.15, even though we only wanted a beer. Otherwise good service. Highly recommended, but some tiny details that took away from giving it 5 stars.

After an unpleasant experience in the hostel. Although it was written that there are air conditioners this is not entirely true. There are portable air conditioners that do not cool the rooms, it was not possible to sleep in the bed upstairs. The common space is also very beautiful and full of potential without air conditioning and it is impossible to sit there comfortably, but to sweat. The place has great potential, and is completely unrealized. It has a lovely roof and in the cool evening it was fun there. (It no longer looks like in the photos they post). The advantage together apart from the nice roof in the evening, were the toilets in our room were separated from the shower so that at the same time two people could use the facilities.

The best hostel in the city. The crew cares about you. They gave me such wonderful attention that I am very grateful and will have to come again. The price is good and the space is nice and clean. Bottom line: they want you to have a good time.

It was excellent! We had breakfast at the Generator and the staff were so friendly and wonderful. My husband has dietary restrictions and Queenie was so accommodating. She’s a real star!

Had a great breakfast experience at Generator Hostel Madrid a few days back. I am delighted by the cleanliness of the buffet area, the efficiency of the staff most especially Ms. Queenie who made sure that her guests felt welcomed. In addition, she was very hospitable, conversational, and professional. The vibe of the hostel buffet area is undeniable. The music, the warm interior design, and a well organized crew and staff make it a one of a kind vibe. Definitely recommended buffet breakfast!
