The nature is incredible and the sense of isolation and silence helps to relax. But that’s where it ends. On weekends only the most expensive tickets are available (9.5 per person). This would be ok if the trail signs were decent, which they’re not, if the paths were decently kept, which some aren’t. And if the staff inside the park was at least civil, which they’re not. We had a rather unpleasant encounter with one of the guards/guides driving one of those electric buses telling us we could not head a certain way, because the park closed in 4 hours. This person was rude and kind of destroyed the peaceful setting. Maps provided are incomplete and incorrect and the signs too. It’s easy to get lost if you don’t have a good sense of direction. No cafeteria and 1 bathroom at the entrance. This could have easily been a 5 stars rating if little things were done.

The park has a lot of paths with varying difficulties. We saw many deer, but the boars were better at hiding! There were also a few educational tours you can take that teach you about bees and birds. Overall it was a fun experience, well worth the 9€

I went in the middle of summer (July), mid afternoon. It was hot and dry but not bad wearing light clothing, good hiking shoes and a cap. I chose the yellow path (longest walk all the way round). It was a little steep for the first quarter but pretty even after that, followed by a gradual descent towards the area where kings used to lodge long ago for their hunting which fortunately, does not happen here anymore. Saw deer, wild boar, birds, frogs and many other species. Sign posts demarcated the paths very well and some had explanations of surroundings and species in both English and Portuguese. They were very well explained with interesting facts. I learnt many new things about the flora and fauna here. The hike took around 2.5 hours at a steady pace. You can also choose from other shorter and easier walks (such as the blue path). Included in our hike was a bonus presentation about hawks and owls at the end of the hike. The two presenters were professionals around this field, devoting full time to the rearing and preservation of bird species and also to educate the public in schools etc. I didn’t make it to the presentation on bees though. Maybe next time. The presentations they offer I think, differ from season to season. I absolutely loved my experience in this park and I would do it again. The tickets are well worth what you pay. Proceeds go towards maintaining the area, so your funds are used for a great cause that I fully believe in and support. The animals appear happy and well looked after here, they are free to roam as they please. The grounds are well maintained too. And for me, this is extremely important as I’m conservationist. Thank you to all the staff. You were friendly and helpful. Will visit again some time soon.

This is the former hunting grounds of some king or other. There is a network of trails, some of which are color coded. Entering the ticket office / gift shop, we were first met with a machine selling tickets. However, it seemed to want to sell us tickets for a specific colored trail, so we skipped the machine and went up to a friendly, matronly woman who hung up the phone apologetically and smilingly asked us which trail we wanted to do as her young daughter looked on, equally smilingly. Now the trail map is very appealing, having all sorts of trails criss-crossing the park, with various attractions charmingly depicted to encourage the hiker to visit them. Call us flighty, but we didn’t want to be tied to just one trail. We wanted to be free. To explore. To live moment by moment, going where the wind blew us. No no, you must pick a trail, she said. Fine, you can try crush our spirit, we said. But we’ll just sneakily go our own way once we get in there, we thought to ourselves. Well, once we got inside we loitered for a moment, pretending to read some informative sign or other while we made sure nobody was watching. As we started to head towards - shock horror - a different path from the one we had tickets for, the daughter ran out and intercepted us. Foiled! She had been secretively monitoring us from inside the building, the sneaky little operative. So we obediently and grudgingly set off on the yellow path. We had the last laugh though, breaking off to climb the fire tower for excellent views and circling back on an entirely pleasant and unsanctioned route before finally returning to the straight and narrow. Overall, a great experience. It was hot out so plenty of water was a good idea. I’ll leave it to you to decide whether to play by the rules or not.

Totally disappointing! We took the blue tour (4km). Didn't get to see any animals, all the museums were closed and the playground was broken. Almost got ran over by one of their employees who drove about 50km an hour over one of the footpaths. They never even thought of giving our money back. What a scam! Never again!

We arrived with a small dog on a leash, but they didn't let us in. They said there was a sign at the entrance, but there was no sign either at the entrance or on the website. As a result, we wasted our time on the trip and a precious day off, and our mood was spoiled. The staff was unfriendly. Since you won't find this information anywhere else, I'll write it here: THEY DON'T WELCOME DOGS IN THIS PARK.

Nice park with a few well developed hiking trails and a chance to spot some wild animals. There are 4 routes, a 4km easy one, two medium routes (ca. 8km each) and one hard route (ca. 9km). The entrance costs €9.5 per person. We visited on a hot summer day, and in the midday as well, so I guess most of the animals were hiding from the heat, we only met two groups of deer, which was still nice, but somewhat below the expectation. Overall still a good experience, but I was to visit the park again - I'd try to choose a cloudy day and earlier or later time of the day.

Getting to Tapada is quite difficult, public transport is rare, and getting there by bicycle [from Mafra] is a challenge. If you have seen the photos from the advertisement, then the reality may be different. This place is not a Disney cartoon or a zoo where animals will run next to you, it is a forest and the most popular animal there is Musca domestica. During 2 hours I saw several deer and the biggest one was me, who was looking for them. The biggest problem of Tapada Nacional de Mafra was the lack of adequate signs and I got lost several times. Please improve the signs for bike ways. This part was the biggest disappointment for me. Duration of the trip: 2 hours [by bike] Price: 6 euros

Very nice national park. Several hiking paths with different levels of difficulty. You are able to see deers, wild boar and several birds. We really enjoyed.

Beautiful national park to walk through. We saw deer and wild boar roaming throughout. Very scenic and an easy hike for the most part!

Must visit! 😍 I rented a bicycle and had a fantastic time enjoying my ride in nature, it felt magical! I saw deers 🦌, wild pigs 🐽, and I found a swing. I recommend the park for both kids and adults.

If you walk silently you can probably see some deer and boars around. I've done all walking trails by now. There are both easier and longer options. None of the walks are difficult for me apart from some small uphill and downhill sections.

Could have a bit more attractions and be more prepared to smaller groups, however it's a very good place to enjoy a morning or afternoon and it's really not expensive at all. And in such a wide reserve, the signalization is not actually very good and some things don't appear on the map as well as some signs that appear in the walking paths até not labeled. All in all I do appreciate it, but were it somewhere else in the world and it would have had a lot more investment. But I guess this is an issue with our country in general.

We hiked for a few hours, learned all about Bee’s, and then took the tram through the property. What a nice place. Our children loved the experience.

The park is great. You have different hiking paths where you can spot animals like deers, boars and other native animals. There is a lot of info around the paths about the nature of the park. Also the staff is very friendly and helpful.

Today we went for a walk in the park with my friends from Siberia! A charming place where we met lots of deer and wild boars! And such beautiful landscapes! The navigation system along the trail is convenient and easy to understand. I only wish I knew at each point how many metres have been covered and how many metres remain to the end of the route. And there's also the aromatic products of my favourite local brand Terra Viva 🌿🤗

We had a wonderful time on the green route! About 3 hours walk is good for kids too. Take water with you!

They don't allow entry after 3pm. This seems unusual for a park that advertises opening hours until 6. Disappointing.

one of the cutest parks near Lisbon. they have multiple hiking trails for different levels and a lot of deer walking around 🦌

  • 4/5 G R. 1 year ago on Google
Mountain forest area for family hike. With the drought the foliage was very dry and river as well, but the deer were present throughout the hike. The site charged €9 a person. Kind of expensive for a hiking trail with a family, but not unusual when closer to Lisbon where the tourism is more prelevent, thus costs apply.

Loved it, especially the calm nature, the old trees and to get nearby to otherwise wild animals. Hopefully I'll get the chance to walk the bigger routes, because between 14.00 and 15.00 o'clock, you may only walk the smaller one (I would guess I could have walked both in time ...). I wish I could turn back time and see how the park looked like back in 2002, before the big fire.

Amazing find thanks to friends suggestion. We were the only ones on the trails. Nice elevation without it being step.

Beautiful place for a walk. Only a shame that you seemingly cannot deviate from the provided routes. There's so much more to see on the park besides what the routes lead you past. Also, bit of warning on the people at the front desk, the woman that "helped" me was not very friendly. 🙄

A bit of an underwhelming experience. The bee-demo was mostly in Portuguese (although he tried his best to slip in some English) and was more show-and-tell for kids with no live demo with bees / hives, etc.. The free-flight demo was also completely in Portuguese but it was quite lovely to see how they trained the birds and cared for them. This was the highlight of the visit. We had timed our visit to do the blue-walk in the evening but within 30mins of walking along a well-worn mud-road we were (rather brusquely) shooed back saying that the road ahead was closed. No explanation. Seemed like such a waste of entry fee!!! Overall, if you speak Portuguese and have kids this might make an interesting evening, else this can be easily skipped.

The park is beautiful. I would give it 5 starts if it wasn't for the lady at the reception who failed to give us the right information, and we ended up with no tickets for the bus tour.

If you come with a baby stroller, be careful not to venture the wrong way from the start. There will be no signs indicating where you are until much later on the way, we ended up struggling in the heat carrying both stroller and baby all the way. Moreover, only the more expensive package tickets are available in summer. Therefore it can be an overpriced dissatisfying experience, borderline dangerous. The park can be nice if enjoyed the right way. We were almost scared to be lost with nobody around while in the middle of it.

If you deicide to visit this national park please do not buy their car tours. It is completely boring and there is nothing interesting. The park is beautiful and nice, so I highly recommend to go for a long walk or ride bicycle. The guide was unfriendly and unpleasant. Except some deers there are no Wildlife.

It is an amazing place ...from King D Carlos that was a place to relax, dating and hunting. However nowadays people there are friendly to give you some demonstrations with falcons owls and a bee class but the place lacks variety since you can only see three species ..deer, boar, and a "Bambi"-cousin type called in Portuguese "Gamo" . It really needs to be better preserved. But nevertheless go visit since it deserves a chance.

😠 What is the point to build a park and do not allow people with dogs, even small, even small on hands, even small on the leash. Portugal is the most not petfriendly country i’ve seen in my life.
