I'm not happy with the management here. Upfront there's guest book to fill and the guy ask for "pay as you like". It was not an entrance fee as you still need to pay 5k if you want to enter the museum. But my main problem, turns out the building was also used as office, it was plagued with vehicles parked in every corner.

For those that like history, its a nice short stop. The museum portion is very limited. Not everything is preserved as they do use the buildings for offices. Please manage your expectations for this historical site. There were no lines or crowd when i visited during a weekday. I doubt that this place gets busy even on the weekends.

What does Makassar mean? Why was it called Ujung Pandang in the past? What is Bone? Gowa? La Galigo? Sure you can search the answers on Google. But it was very interesting to listen to the lively explanations from our guide, Pak Taufiq, and seeing some of the artefacts in person. You can tour the complex on your own and the entrance is free. But paying one of the registered tour guides would really pay off! We can recommend Pak Taufiq. He is long haired, very animated, and speaks Spanish. He'd be hard to miss! One note though: just like many historical sites in Indonesia, the management did pretty well to maintain the exterior, but not so much in the interior. We can see things are started to deteriorate.

A historical landmark in the heart of Makassar. The fort established in 1545 by the 9th Gowa King, and then the VOC took it over in 1667 as a result of Bungaya Treaty (in which the Gowa submitted to the VOC). After that, the fort was used as a center of spice storage in eastern Indonesia. The entrance fee is free, but they charge for donation. The visitors can hire a guide if they want to learn more about this fort.

As a big supporter of Feyenoord Rotterdam I needed to be here ofcourse. Its an impressive fort. You need to imagine that its build over 100 years ago. By the Indonesians under ruling of Adm. Speelman. For the whole history I would recommend a tourguide. They are present for 100k-200k rph. Depends how nice you are to them in the beginning. There is no entree fee. Its more like what are you willing to donate. The museum isnt really dedicated to Fort Rotterdam. More like to Makassar history. It's worth it to see it. With a guide it will take 1 - 1.5 hour. Alone checking around 30 min.

Fort Rotterdam is a 17th-century fort in Makassar on the island of Sulawesi in Indonesia. It is a Dutch fort built on top of an existing fort of the Gowa Kingdom. The first fort on the site was constructed by the a local sultan in around 1634, to counter Dutch encroachments. The site was ceded to the Dutch under the Treaty of Bongaya, and they completely rebuilt it between 1673 and 1679. It had six bastions and was surrounded by a seven meter high rampart and a two meter deep moat.

Fort Rotterdam of Makassar....it was a fort when the Dutch occupied Indonesia. But now, It is a museum. Lucky me, the fort was sited very close to the hotel where I was staying in. I put this in my first list of interesting places to visit in my first weekend in Makassar. Started at 09.30 am from the hotel, walked under a very bright sunshine along the path which took me to the fort. Reported my attendance to the guest greeter, he welcomed me and invited me exploring the museum. I admired all of those ancient buildings there and the collections inside which are exciting. Only certain buildings are opened for public. Unfortunately, there was no more image as a military defense fort I could find in the site. A heritage from the colonial era that should be maintained and developed for the benefit of now generation.

Visit this site in early morning while on ship transit from Labuan Bajo to Bau2. I have found some part underconstruction in front side of the site which made a bit confuse to acces the main gate. I rarely find the information of this site and got clueless. No clear sign, so you are freely to explore all of this site. No need to buy ticket, free entry. I am not sure where we can park your car kr motorcycle, but there are some space in front of the gate, but it still a bit chaotic at the moment.

Fort Rotterdam (also known as Benteng Rotterdam or Benteng Ujung Pandang) is a 17th-century fort in Makassar on the island of Sulawesi in Indonesia. It is a Dutch fort built on top of an existing fort of the Gowa Kingdom. The first fort on the site was constructed by the a local sultan in around 1634, to counter Dutch encroachments. In 1634, the Dutch East India Company (VOC) captured the fort and renamed it Fort Rotterdam. The fort was expanded and strengthened, and became a major VOC stronghold in the region. It was used as a base for trading and military operations, and also served as a prison for VOC captives. Fort Rotterdam is a pentagonal fort with five bastions. The walls are made of coral and limestone, and are up to 25 feet thick. The fort has a moat, which was originally filled with seawater. The fort is now a museum, and is open to the public. Visitors can explore the fort's grounds and buildings, and learn about its history. The museum also has a collection of artifacts from the Gowa Kingdom and the VOC era. Fort Rotterdam is a popular tourist destination in Makassar, and is one of the most important historical sites in the city. It is a reminder of the city's rich history and its strategic importance in the region. Here are some of the things you can see and do at Fort Rotterdam: • Explore the fort's grounds and buildings, including the bastions, the moat, and the museum. • Learn about the fort's history, from its construction by the Gowa Kingdom to its use by the VOC and the Indonesian government. • See the museum's collection of artifacts, including weapons, tools, and pottery from the Gowa Kingdom and the VOC era. • Take in the views of the city and the Makassar Strait from the top of the fort's walls. • Enjoy a cultural performance or event at the fort's amphitheater. Fort Rotterdam is a great place to learn about Makassar's history and culture. It is also a beautiful and scenic place to relax and enjoy the views.

Fort Rotterdam is a great place to learn about the history of Makassar and Indonesia. The fort is well-maintained and there are plenty of exhibits and information boards.

I visited this place and was amazed by the background history told by the guide. I suggest you to ask the tour guide to accompany your visit in this place. They will tell you everything and are very helpful. There is La Galigo museum inside this fortress as well. The museum exhibit lots of things that will broaden your knowledge about Makassar for sure.

It is good to learn the history again, but the site has changed a lot after the restoration. Some places are used as offices and living space for the staff which limits its former function as a learning facility and bitter reminder of colonialism.

I visited this place with a friend lives in Makassar. This space exhibits the traditional language and culture of the region. Small booths are lined up in the field, and high school students around me visited here on the same day as me.

There are many buildings I can't join to see a rooms 😅 Many places have been made part of their offices But no problem, 1 La Galigo museum can enter And pay for the ticket There is 1 dark room when I tried to enter it was stuck 😂😂 it's funny enough to test my fears trying to read the photo paintings there The air from the cool trees and the amazing view of the blue sky *Tiket masuk awal gratis dan hanya menandatangani buku tamu Terima kasih para guidenya sangat ramah dan bekerja keras melestarikan budaya Indonesia 🤗

The concept of the place is great. I personally like the vibes of indonesian history through the buildings. But as a typical historical place in Indonesia, it still need maintenance such as the stairs, rest room, etc.

Historic building in Makasar, near from swiss bellhotel. You dont need to buy a ticket here. The building was still strong. Even though the visitor dont need to buy a ticket but this fort is very clean, neat and well organized. You can take photos here to perpetuates the history about this building.

It would be so dramatic if there's a diorama or virtual experiences of the past.. butI love the vibes, and I got a good tour guide too.

Historical building, some buildings are used for the government's office too. Can be said it is well-maintained compared to other historical buildings. There was no queue when we visited. There is no entrance fee, but you need to pay 5K for the retribution fee when visiting the museum. The museum displays relics and artefacts mainly from Bugis, Makassar, and Toraja culture. If you need a tour guide, you can use their service for Rp 150k with tour duration ranging from 1-2 hours; we used the service (with Pak Hambalin) and we can say we are very satisfied with his service and kindness. Thank you! :)) There are some aspects that I think need more improvements, though, like routine maintenance and, if possible, not incorporate the office buildings with historical buildings so it can be used more for tourism purposes.

Clean and structured. Several corners have litters. Need more information on the fort, difficult to get stories except with the help of tour guide.

Nice & beautiful historical place worth visit. But make sure you have small change because some parts in this fort areas, some cleaners will ask for small private donation for themselves. Just give them like US$1. For a local tour guide, I'd pay around US$10.
