I stayed for 2 nights at the backpacker room - basic but clean, with a pantry stocked with coffee and tea. Amazing views even at the backpacker rooms. The lodge itself is in an incredible location, with easy access to many trails.

Beautiful views all round. The weather was not so great on the day of our visit, so we had to raincheck the hike. We had breakfast and got to do some sip and paint by the fireplace, and it was so fun. The staff was friendly and welcoming.

What a lovely weekend at Witsieshoek. We booked our accommodation here because it's the only lodge and closest lodge to Sentinel Car Park. They offer shuttle service from Witsieshoek to Sentinel car park for R185 per person return. It is double cab Toyota bakkies with canopies on. 4 sit in front and 4 sit at the back. There are mattresses at the back. They go up 06h00, 07h30 and 09h30. You have to book your spot in advance to avoid disappointment. You whatsapp them as soon as you are done with the hike, then they will come and fetch you, they wait a few minutes to fill the bakkie before coming back down. Road to Sentinel car park is horrible, only high 4x4 can drive there. Room was absolutely perfect. We were in Sentinel 2. Best room at the lodge. Spacious, beautiful view of Sentinel Peak and Amphitheater. 2x heaters, electric blanket and blankets on top of the bed. Will net get cold here. Clean, hot water, coffee and tea available in room. May not cook own food in room. We took the dinner, bed and breakfast option. We missed breakfast before the hike. But didn't know that they can give you a food pack with on the hike. There are 2x time slots for dinner, 17h30 to 19h30, and then 19h30 to 21h00. The 1st dinner slot was full when we checked in, thus had to wait for slot 2, and we waited till 20h45 for our dinner. That was really unacceptable. Rest of the lodge was great. Staff was friendly.

If you want to explore the Amphitheatre and Tugela Falls area, there is no better place to stay than the Witsieshoek Mountain Lodge. Tranquil with spectacular views. The lodge is comfortable, neat, quaint, and works! Service is very good, and the food, although the menu is limited, is of a good quality. The staff are professional and the service is good. The lodge provides transportation to the Sentinel car park, where you start your hike up to the top of the Amphitheatre via the chain ladders. Definitely worth visiting!

From the moment the reservation was made and up to the check out, the staff were absolutely amazing and so friendly. The food was also really tasty. My only concern was that the rooms get very cold at night.

Wonderful place situated on a brilliant spot. The only downside is that they can't maintain the road between them and Sentinel Peak parking. Unfortunately they keep it in such a terrible state to make more money on the 4x4 shuttle service, but it will take a proper contractor 1 month to fix the road.

Right out in the mountains, scenery is gorgeous, staff so friendly and helpful, food is really good value. Rooms comfortable. If mountain scenery is your priority, then this is a top choice

Upon arrival we had a sincere welcome by the reception staff….and then Eddy came to greet us! What a nice guy, such a big asset to have someone like that on your staff. A very comfortable room with all amenities necessary. Great views from our room and from the restaurant. Accomodation on a bed & breakfast basis, but supper offered as an optional extra.

Beautiful place to stay. Clean spacious rooms with an insane view of the amphitheater through floor to ceiling glass windows. Good food (veg burger and chips) in the restaurant. We did the incredible sentinel peak hike (transport to the start organised through reception). Could have easily stayed longer!

What an amazing place to be. The scenery is out of this world! I would definitely recommend this lodge to anyone and everyone. Will be back soon 👌

A base camp is what it is- Except overpriced for a South African. The lodge is in serious need of an update, especially the restaurant/bar area. The beds were comfy, the rooms were very hot and the fan windows were old and did not stay open (no fans in rooms). Bathrooms need some TLC with mould on the ceiling. Dinner at the restaurant was great. After staying a night and spending a fair amount at the lodge it would been nice to have been able to shower after a hike at a small fee/ complimentary. The rate is fair for people who have not stayed at the lodge- however, we had spent enough for very average accommodation and poor front desk service. My opinion is it serves as a base camp for one night but I would not recommend staying here if you are not doing the hikes and wouldn't stay more than one night.

What an amazing experience! Yvette really went to lengths making us comfortable. A lovely spa treatment after a day of walking with awesome sights. And of course, if you get Eddie as your guide you can make it up ( and down!) the chain ladder despite fear of heights.

Lovely accomodation, stayed in the bsckpackers units. Bathrooms was always clean. Kitchen had everything one needs. Unlimited supply of coffee and tea. Views are amazing. Start of trail down into the royal natal park.

If your plan is to visit Drakenberg and do hikes this is the perfect location to stay. On top of a mountain the road towards the lodge is beautiful and an experience in itself. In general the staff at the lodge is very friendly and supportive to accommodate its guests in any way. Do note weather can be very tricky, meaning a sudden and/or persistent mist can block they view completely and prevent doing any hike safely (which the staff will advise strongly against in these weather conditions). Unfortunately we had one of those days, but the staff was very supportive in creating a warm atmosphere in the common room and starting the fireplace to make it warm and cozy. Food and drinks are plentily available throughout the day. The rooms are quite spacious and if you pick the right room the view is spectacular (when not blocked by mist). The beds are very comfortable and large. In general our stay at this lodge was very positive, however there are a few points of improvement. The quality of the food, mainly breakfast and dinner, could be better. I do understand the remote location might make it a bit challenging, however the variety could be improved as well. Secondly some of the staff, specifically the ones in the restaurant area, could take a more friendly and welcoming attitude. Lastly, making WiFi available in the rooms as well, and not only in the common area, would be a plus.

It's clean and the view is amazing. Only 25% of the staff looks happy to give you service. Somehow the staff doesn't look like they like their job. The food is good enough.

The sunset and sunrise are spectacular here. The rooms were warm and comfortable and the hike to the waterfall was very nice.

Great stay at the base of Sentinel Peak and the hike to Tugela Falls. The staff was very accommodating and arranged for a 4x4 shuttle to the car park/trailhead for our hike. Our shuttle driver had excellent 4x4 driving skills for the 40 minute drive to the trailhead and was there timely for our return back. Breakfast and dinner were very nice as was the service. Our room was very comfortable, clean and warm! Highly recommend this very unique setting to launch your adventures into Royal Natal National Park.

Disappointed with the poor organization around the ‘shuttle service’ to the hike - it’s a 1.5hr turnaround time so long waits before and after hike. Very small dining area not able to accommodate all guests- long waiting times for table and food. Reception staff very unfriendly but restaurant staff very kind- think overall not enough staff for peak periods. Bungalow very basic, needs upgrade of furniture but luxury room very good size and beautiful view

Overall a lovely place and can recommend. However!! View is incredible. Even the hiking trails are gorgeous. The hiking trails have no signage, so including myself, I know of 3 groups that got lost and had to backtrack due to bad signage on the hikes. The restaurant was average at best with very limited options. Considering the room I was in did not cater for self catering i would have hoped the restaurant was better and had more variety. The room itself is great and neat and the view from the room is amazing, it however didn't feel all that private as other people would come sit outside the room to enjoy the view. They also had a few power issues (beyond loadshedding) which was a mild inconvenience at times. Staff was very friendly. Overall can recommend, but i do hope they add some signage for the hikes.

We had never planned to stay here - we were in the area to do the Sentinel Peak hike but when our car broke down the team and the lodge helped us with a tow and a mechanic. Being a Sunday they also kindly accommodated us for a last minute booking. The staff were so friendly. The food was delicious. The inclusive breakfast was exactly what you need after/before hiking days! The lodge is perfectly situated in the mountains for access to hiking, beautiful views and the sunrise of your dreams! Our room was one of the bungalows which was very clean and comfortable. In the cool mountain weather it was our best sleep yet! We are so grateful for the generosity of the manager and the team. Thank you so much.

Great basecamp for hiking the Drakensburg in the area. Beautiful views! Rooms are very basic, but kept clean. The restaurant has a great view but often didn't have certain items - but given how remote they are, that's understandable. Staff are friendly and very helpful.

Very nice place and the area... Ooh woow. !!!!. I spend few days on a work trip. We also went on a helicopter ride to top of the mountain. I would go again on a holiday mybe during winter to experience some snow. One suggestion i have is on the food. It it okay but lack variety and waiters end up not knowing what to say since some foods are not there... even if they are on the menu.

Room was ok. Stayed in the backpackers. Basics was available. Keep in mind you have to share a bathroom and kitchen and house can be noisy at night. Power failures is a regular occurance. Restaurant had limited options and food was ok. Road to Sentinel peak parking is bad so expect to pay the R160 if you dont have a high clearance vehicle. Views was great and hike was great! R60 entrance into the area and R100 for hike

Decent lodge with beautiful, spacious rooms, though there was no way to get natural light, without people walking by looking straight into our bed. Wi-Fi in the room was available but a little slow and VERY unreliable. Restaurant served decent food but was VERY slow and struggled accommodating dietary restrictions.

If you are looking to do hike in the Royal National Park this is the place to stay. I was going to book at the more elite Cavern Resort but it would have been a 4 hour round trip by car which would have been a huge mistake until a friend told be about Witsieshoek. I chose a chalet and was given one with a view of the entire amphitheater which was special. Even if I had chosen a normal room I would have still been happy as they are neat and tidy. I was not expecting to stay at 12 Apostles Hotel. This is a lodge that is clean, comfortable and the menu is simple but had tasty meals. The staff are very warm and friendly. I did the amphitheater hike. Best place to stay if you are doing his hike. Ask to feed the vultures if you have time and patience. 10/10 rating from me. Thanks Jan and team.
