Love The Gas Lamp, always have since I first visited. Amazing selection of whiskies and beers (also gins etc but that's not for me). Staff are generally very knowledgeable and all very friendly. Aesthetically it may no be to everyone's taste, but given the history of the place it remains authentic

A well stocked bar and a great atmosphere! My girlfriend was delighted to see so many choices of Old Fashioned in the cocktail menu and the barstaff were happy to give advice on the range of beers. A place we'll definitely go back to!

28/09/22: been here many times! Always a great selection of craft ales, unusual brews, but something for everyone! The Gas Lamp is an interesting pub. Housed in the former Manchester & Salford Children's Mission building, the pub has an impressive frontage, but you could easily miss the small doorway that leads down to this basement bar. On descending the dimly lit stairs, the room you enter is certainly different for a pub - Victorian glazed brick walls and little in the way of decoration. The bar is along the wall to the rear and is a sparse wooden affair. The real ales on offer are interesting - no "famous" national brands here - the beers are selected from smaller interesting breweries, many of whom are not seen regularly even in Manchester's multi-ale houses. The Gas Lamp now has its own brewery, Pomona Island, located in Weaste in Salford.

I’ve been in the gas lamp before and it was okay. I noticed a heavy smell of damp and mould this time on entering, which cannot be healthy. However, something even more shocking happened. This time our group (probably 10 or so people) were turned away because a member of our family (who happens to be mixed race) was apparently accused of being asleep at the bar (he wasn’t and he certainly wasn’t any danger to anyone even himself). They didn’t accuse anyone else of that and bar staff decided to pick on him. He was perfectly fine to go up and down stairs unaided, security staff had no problem either and was completely compas mentas. He was made to feel completely unwelcome by the bar staff. I can only describe it as racially motivated discrimination. We were pretty disgusted and left straight away. I won’t be returning ever again.

One of those bars that are hidden in plain sight. Just a few doors up from the masons resteraunt, there's a great big sign above the door way down the steps to this Victorian drinking den. Plenty of cask ales served as well as some favourites. The tiled rooms probably original are timeless which gives it the Victorian feel. Just imagine how many people have frequented this establishment over the years.

I would say this is a place for winter due to it being underground. Love the old tiles and the atmosphere. Even tho on the edge of Spinningfields there are no posy people which is good. It’s definitely quirky and I would bring people who haven’t been to Manchester before here. Great range of gins I was spooky for choice and it’s a good idea to have a gin of the week as it was difficult to choose.

Great little hidden gem off Bridge Street going towards Salford Central. If you are into history, this is one place to visit. This was the old soup kitchen that used to feed the children at Wood St Mission. Good selection of ales, spirits, and non-alcholic drinks Reasonably priced too for the city centre. Less than £5 for a pint.

Extremely attractive basement bar with beautiful tiled walls. It's in what was the kitchens of a former mission hall, feeding the poor in what was a very different Manchester in Victorian times. Very good selection of different ales. The only drawback is they don't accept cash. I don't want to have to use a credit card just to pay for a pint of beer.

Very very nice pub out of the way of the tourists in the centre. Downstairs, GREAT beers (Factotum is my new all time favourite) but the brewsmith oatmeal stout also delicious. V reasonable pints circa £4.50. More seating at the end of the pub past the toilets. Highly recommend!

This is a rather unique basement bar and a great beer venue. Descend the steps to rooms covered in white tiles. Albrecht loves this bar. Very friendly and knowledgable staff. Four real ales available. On this visit from local Pomona Island ( pint of Olinger pale 4.3%) and Chapter ( pint of Blindfold off 4.2%)breweries. Also a super discount for CAMRA members..so join up and bring your card.

Bar manager miserable. Few people in when we got there then 6 lads walked in 20.55 and the manager said you can't have a drink I'm closing at 9pm. Great example of hospitality working in the industry myself id of served them after all you were mad busy. NOT. Sunday 10th September.

Different but worth finding this below stairs gem. Beer choice amazing and cocktails to knock you flat. Will definitely be going back, if I can find it again 🤭

Hidden Gem! Great underground bar, stocked with an excellent range of Gins. Staff are wonderful, knowledge and love to be personable. Last visit we met barman/manager Tom, who was so wonderful that we will be making this place our regular. Had a great range of beers and such a chilled out vibe.

Thankfully a cool cellar bar on a hot summer's day. Pomona Island brewery run, so their lovely beers feature as well as those of other local brewers. 12 different beers, 7 from Pomona . Definitely worth coming to!

Lovely little tiled cellar bar in and amongst the busy restaurant area of spinningfields. Lovely and cool in the summer, and warm in winter. Great selection of beers and with an enormous selection of gins and whiskies. Always try to call in here if passing.

Love classic pubs like this that have a great range of craft beer. We sat admiring the deco, history and culture of the pub. Great beers as well, will definitely be back.

Very quirky establishment some great craft beers on tap from local breweries and beyond. Massive whiskey options also and a nice visual history on the walls of what it used to be before a bar.

Small and quirky pub, fair amount of seating spaces, vast menu with some pricey drinks. The customer service is pretty standard. Nothing outstanding. The menu is quite vast and has craft beer options, The interior design could use some sprucing up, there isn't much to look at. I didn't see any food menus or any food being served at all. This includes simple starters like French fries, onion rings, etc.

Easily the most underrated boozer in Manchester city centre. Fantastic array of beers and stronger stuff if you're in the mood. Maybe more important is the consistently great staff and absolutely killer and varied soundtrack. Cosy, wonderful - there's everything to love about this place. I'm having a great seasonal pint right now, and have been listening to ace soul, Kate Bush, rhythm and blues, Solsbury Hill and more. Magic. Love this place.

A favourite of ours since moving to Manchester. Friendly staff, chilled vibe and great selection of beers in an authentic, vintage environment. It's a hidden gem, down some stairs in a basement and stands out from the usual garish, chain or flashy cocktail bars of Spinningfields.

Nice bar, easy vibe, good atmosphere, lovely drinks, kind staff, clean place. Bit of an eastern egg, a surprisingly good one

Some great beer kept really well. Plenty of choice on both cask and keg from Ponoma and other breweries. It's the other side of town for me but if I'm over that way I will definitely pop in.

First time visiting recently and I can't wait to return. It's a beautiful place to spend some time! Would recommend 100%

Nice little bar, amazing beers on, open until 1AM on some nights, what's not to like. The fact that bartenders also like this bar and go after their shifts makes it a great place to chinwag with friends.

Quirky bar in the basement of a building. Lots of different beers on offer. A little claustrophobic due to lack of windows and the decor reminded me if a public toilet, still I enjoyed it here very much.

Was recommended by a friend. He is still. A late Sunday afternoon, quiet, good beer choice. Am not an all card fan, as this venue is. Was filling up as I left, presumably Sunday last shouters. Good on them.
