An iconic building behind Piccadilly Railway station, known around the world for its infamous Smith's and Morrissey night on the first week of the month. Popular with all age groups and have themed nights throughout the week as well as bands performing. Hasn't succumbed to the glitzy superpub status, it's your typical back street pub with all the original fixtures and fittings, how a true pub should be. Pool table (seen better days) fruit machine, pulled pints, crisps and an atmosphere....

I honestly love this place. Only been for Metal gigs and I can't express how great each visit of mine has been. Most chill venue, the bands are usually chilling by their merch downstairs, Is always get excited when a band plays here because it opens up photo opportunities. Good drink prices too. Its like a normal pub downstairs, with a decent sized music venue on next floor, its brilliant!

When me granny came to Manchester,England to visit our relatives (we are from Dublin) they’d all go to The Star and Garter. Me granny loved The Drifters and saw them many times at this venue (always ate the obligatory chicken in a basket whilst swilling down the black stuff) it was/is a great working class cabaret club.. I’ve been 4 times to see bands and had a grand time. Cheap drinks, fantastic staff. Wonderfully grotty

Great small gig venue, if you're a lover of intimate gigs you'll enjoy the Star and Garter. Warning - it is two flights of stairs to get up to the gig room, so not accessible to all. In a grungy pub like this, I expected the drinks to be super cheap, but it was £5 for a pint of Amstel; which means the cost of living has affected these guys too 😩 All of the staff were incredibly friendly and helpful, couldn't fault them one bit.

This is a venue designed around function rather than frills. Drink offers were good and staff were very pleasant. It is a proper pub with a very decent space upstairs for live music. I was at a gig featuring Dru Blue, Katie Mac and Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly. All of the acts did a smashing job and made for a very good evening. I highly recommend going to see any of the 3 solo 👍

A legendary venue with absolutely tons of history. This is one of Manchester best places for the more underground level of bands. It's also got great owners. 2 for a fiver on cans.... Oh hell yeah! It's also been featured loads in different TV shows. You have to experience this place. It has a mega atmosphere!!

You will not have a better night out than watching The Scratch at The Star and Garter. They go 'hell for leather' and do not let up. Do yourself a favour and buy, listen and watch the boys of Ireland. There cannot be a better live act in this world.

Absolutely loved jumping up and down to a marathon of punk bands. Ooh my 50 year old knees have felt it this week though! Lol 😆 🤣

Awesome music venue. Here we saw Alright, The Paul Taylor Experience and Scumface which was brilliant. Not only do the bands bring in a friendly and fun crowd, the venue is laid out nicely and drinks are reasonably priced. The toilets were clean (always gets bonus points!) and the staff were super friendly. Definitely worth getting to see a show or two there

"The last real indie venue" is as it was described by the owner. I went to watch Call Me Karizma play on May 4, and the upstairs stage room has enough space for maybe 100 people, the downstairs with a quaint bar and seating composed of sofas, chairs, and benches in three open floor rooms next to the bar. Very comfortable place, would recommend for friends nights out to watch bands.

Urm.....if you love The Smith's, goth, and have a great immune system the disco on the first Friday of the month is for you!

  • 3/5 Val J. 1 year ago on Google
Great music venue. Such a shame that the pa detracted from the performance. Don't want perfection....but would love to hear the vocals. Felt sad that the artists were struggling with the monitor situation.

Me and my friend visited this place on 04.05.22 to see Call Me Karizma's live performance. We had a great experience, two gentlemen on the entrance were lovely and friendly, another guy who checked our tickets was lovely too. Once the venue door opened, we were let inside before the show started, we had some drinks in the bar, ladies serving us vere welcoming and nice. After that we went upstairs for the show and it was sooo good, unbelievable! Call Me Karizma is such a talent, kindest human being. The way he performs is just another level, I wish more people could discover his music. Me and my friend (and I'm sure the other fans too) had one of the best nights there! After the show ended, we took some photos with artist and had a good chat with one of the gentlemens (the one who was on the entrance at the beginning) just before we left. Amazing and memorable experience!

I rated this 5 stars a few years back, but it has dropped a few levels for me. The drinks are far more expensive now (before the recession hit us!), and the bar staff are just a bit unfriendly. I'll keep 3 stars because it's still going strong with the smiths disco!!

  • 3/5 Anthony C. 7 months ago on Google
Venue is great but the bar staff seen unable to pour a pint and it's a lot more expensive than it used to be

  • 5/5 CMoldenfineart 1 year ago on Google
One of my favourite venues for intimate shows! Sometimes the bar is cash only though so worth bearing that in mind before you visit as its a bit out of the way behind the train station.

Always a pleasure to visit this 'Ol Gal, seen many gigs over the years here in one of the best,if not THE best, small venue in Manchester

  • 4/5 Anthony L. 1 year ago on Google
Nice to see this place still going had great memories back in 1985 when I worked round the corner at Delprint Display on Buxton road we use to go Star & Carter for a few pints after work

  • 4/5 Oliver H. 1 year ago on Google
Always an impressive building to approach, the Star & Garter is a no nonsense old school pub and a proper 'band upstairs' venue. There is some great musical heritage at the S & G too. Well worth a visit.

Cool little Venue, was part of Outbreak Fest 2023 as the "Podcast Stage". As it was part of the festival you would pay higher amounts for a drink. however Pints of Guinness were not poured correctly and all looked in horror at all members of staff at pouring the pints of Guinness- more foam than drink. If you ordered a can of drink (coke/fanta etc) then it was not chilled nor was Ice offered.
